Mohun Bagan, a Kolkata-based club more known for its football team, has signed on Sri Lankans Chaminda Vaas and Tillakaratne Dilshan for the rest of the local domestic season. While Vaas, not part of the one-day squads for Bangladesh Pakistan, will join the team on January 10 ahead of the quarter-final of a Twenty20 tournament, Dilshan is expected to join later in the season.
"We have registered both of them with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) today. Having already made the quarterfinal, Mohun Bagan will have Vaas in their line-up," Mohun Bagan assistant general-secretary Srinjoy Basu told PTI. "But, unfortuantely, Dilshan will be busy with his country committments so won't get him as of now. I spoke to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) chief Duleep Mendis, who gave his consent."
Basu said they had first approached Sanath Jayasuriya. "I am sure their participation will revive club cricket," he said. "If Vaas or Dilshan play here, there will be crowds and enthusiasm. Our boys will also get to learn many things playing with the experienced duo." Mohan Bagan are led by Bengal batsman Manoj Tiwary. Earlier this season, Muttiah Muralitharan had been signed up by Bengal, but international commitments prevented him from playing a game.
