Lewis remanded in custody

Chris Lewis, the former England allrounder, has been remanded in custody for a further week after he appeared in court via video link from HMP Highpoint at Mid Sussex Magistrates' Court in Haywards Heath. Lewis has been charged with trying to smuggle cocaine worth around £200,000 through Gatwick Airport.

Lewis made a brief appearance alongside co-defendant Chad Kirnon, a basketball player, to confirm his name and date of birth. They were arrested on December 8 when UK Border Agency staff found nearly 4kg of liquid cocaine, concealed in fruits tins, in baggage that arrived on a flight from St Lucia. Lewis and Kirnon had appeared in court on December 17, where they were remanded in custody.
