« Will inexperience count? - India v Sri Lanka, 1st ODI | | Sreesanth stakes his claim »

Vying for a ticket to the West Indies

One match to go before the selectors pick their squad for the Caribbean. The sole question mark seems to be over Sreesanth, who's been out of sorts in the one-day game. With India bowling on a lively wicket, this is his chance to turn the tide in his favour. Sehwag is the other person who needs a good outing, though his passage seems assured. What do you think the selectors will do on Monday?

It will be harsh on sreesanth if he is not get picked.. He can do much better on WI wickets for sure..

Posted by: p on 02/11/2007

Pick Laxman, drop Patel-he seems lazy. The batting is strong.Sehwag must play.

Posted by: Jay Varkey on 02/11/2007

Sreesanth should be included on the basis of his performance during the last tour to the Caribbeans. He could be an asset on the lively pitches over there. Moreover he should not be judged on the basis of his performance in two or three one days played on placid batting pitches

Posted by: K P Chandra on 02/11/2007

I would like to remind those selectors to consider Sreesanth and Munaf for the westindies as they can perform much better in the bouncy, grassy pitches which has similarity in Indian soil.

Posted by: kumar on 02/11/2007

I think that India doesn't even need Sreeshanth in the world cup. Indian bowling is very strong with Zaheer, Agarkar, Munaf, Kumble and Harbajan.

Posted by: Ads on 02/11/2007

The wickets in the Windies are expected to be low and slow. Packing the side with spinning options seems to make sense. Sreesanth is a fuller length swing bowler. In unhelpful conditions and with little help from the atmospheric conditions, he will not be enough of a threat. ZAK, Irfan, Agarkar and Munaf should make the cut.

Posted by: Gift on 02/11/2007

Sehwag should be picked as had done well in the carribean last time. Sachin should open with Uthappa and Ganguly should be brought as one-down.

Posted by: Nanda on 02/11/2007

It does not matter what sreesanth does today, he should be dropped for the world cup this time around. Dont get me wrong, I like sreesanth a lot but right now he does not have the discipline to be an effective 1-day player. Too much energy! He is arguably our best test bowler but not 1-day....yet.
As for Sehwag...very tough decision. He is out of form, confrontational, etc.. Even if he scores in the next couple of games how much guarantee would that be? On the other side, he is clearly a match winner. If he scores a hundred...chances are india will be winning just because of the way he does it. I would take the risk and take him..just for a couple of good innings.

With the injuries to Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan and Ajit Agarkar in the first two games against Sri Lanka, the selectors may be justified in feeling that they are going into tomorrow's important selection meeting with their hands tied behind their back. As a result, I can't see them selecting any team other than the one listed below:

1. Robin Uthappa
2. Saurav Ganguly
3. Rahul Dravid
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Virender Sehwag
6. Yuvraj Singh / Dinesh Karthik
7. Mahendra Singh Dhoni
8. Irfan Pathan / S. Sreesanth
9. Ajit Agarkar / Munaf Patel
10. Harbhajan Singh / Anil Kumble
11. Zaheer Khan

well...as is obvious, virender will obviously be in the squad, as he is a matchwinner, like Jayasuriya, and can be simply DEVESTATING on his day, and so he should not be left out. As for Sreesanth, as a Tamil lad, I want him in the team, but, everyone has doubts over him, and in his short career, he hasnt been able to show his match-winning talents too much, so I think that he should also be taken to the World Cup, as I am sure he will repay the selector's confidence in him!!

Posted by: Ram on 02/11/2007

Shewag is pointless - unless something magical change happens to his batting technique.

Its like betting on a spent horse. Come on lets face it. International cricketers and teams have easily sorted him out !

Posted by: Pradeep on 02/11/2007

Sehwag will be in the team for sure, purely based on his matchwinning abilities, however Sreesanth hasn't been able to handle the while ball as effectively as the red ball, he will lose out to Munaf, and we can't go in with more than 6 regular bowlers (4 pacers and 2 spinners)in the WC squad

Posted by: Sharat on 02/11/2007

Sehwag may help win 1 or 2 games. But, how many does he help the team lose ? Consistency is more important for victories.

Posted by: Nilesh on 02/11/2007

Sehwag will go to WC owing to his "past record" anyways. today's performance will not matter much. Sreesanth may not make it but we should have him for surprise elements as there will be many countries to whom he will be new and that can give us the edge.
Yuvraj hasnt got to bat lately and he also might get picked up. but I won't mind if he is not selected as he will take some time to get into form and at WC India may not have that much liberty. Dinesh Karthik who is in good form should be his replacement.

Posted by: samiuddin on 02/11/2007

i think there is also a big question mark on irfan and being injured hasn't done him any good. Also where is the electric man kaif. He should be back as well since he can bring the team out of trouble along with dravid

Posted by: Ranbir Shergill on 02/11/2007

to be honest india is in semifinals for sure
but thing to pick the best team for the world cup. best 16 players are

1. Sachin Tendulakr
2. Sehwag
3. Ganguly
4. Dravid
5. Yuvraj
6. Dhoni
7. Harbhajan
8. Kumble
9. Zaheer
10 Agarkar
11. Pathan
12. Patel
13. Karthik
14. Uthappa
15. Sreesanth
16. Raina

can pick any of them in playing 11

Posted by: kmvbhushan on 02/11/2007

I feel the same team will be selected for WORLD CUP 2007.But i feel we missed one alrounder namely Joginder Sharma.Sehwag will be selected even if he didn't perform in this one day match as per the statement of Rahul that past performance will be reckoned. We have more options for opening slot as well middle order.Hope India can perform well to bring back the World Cup.

Posted by: Roy on 02/11/2007

My Team

Uthappa
Ganguly
Dravid
Sachin
Sehwag
Yuvraj
Dhoni
Agarkar
Harbhajan
Zaheer
Munaf

Kumble
Karthik
R Powar
Pathan/Sreeshanth - Thats tuff!

And to my friend Thirucumaran - Sreeshanth is not a Tamil lad. He is a Malayali (Keralite). Anyways, regional basis shouldn't ever be the criteria.

Posted by: Arun on 02/11/2007

I believe Sreesanth should make it to the WC squad purely based on his sledging tactics.. Don't forget..he's a classical performer too.. Indians need someone to have the dance-if-you-hit-a-six attitude to keep them going, especially in a tournament as big as the WC !!

Posted by: Jonathan on 02/11/2007

Whoever said drop Patel, have a good hard look at yourself. That's just silly, he's been our best ODI bowler over the last 12 months.

Posted by: Mahesh on 02/11/2007

If agarkar can survive so long with more flops than match winners as well as going over 50 runs in most one dayers, why sreeshanth now. He should be taken to the world cup & try to give confidence rather than demoralise somebody who is so agressive. It may be noted that he is the most agressive player in the squad and India needs such players to motivate the field unlike emotionless munaf.

Posted by: Rishi on 02/11/2007

I think you will need Sreeshant. He has the right temperment and attitude. It really does not matter to him if he is smacked around for a couple of boundaries because he is aggressive and can rebound quickly. It would be nice to see an Indian attack of Pathan, Zaheer, Sreeshant/Patel. As far as Shewag is considered, I think he is lost in two minds everytime he steps to the crease and is surely a huge risk. But the rewards are there if Shewag clicks, he can not only bowl 5-6 overs in the middle innings, which India will need desperately and he can do some damage in the middle order if he gets going. Hopefully things work out for both of these two key Indian players.

Posted by: sai eashwar on 02/11/2007

the selectors should just retain the same 15 which played the first 2 odis unless someone has a serious injury, yes sreesanth can be expensive on flat tracks but can u tell me a single pace bowler who has gone unpunished in indian wickets !and also i feel the playing eleven for the ist odi is
indias best xi wat do u think?

Posted by: Sumeet on 02/11/2007

All those who think Sreesanth wont be effective in the west indies have absolutely no idea about confidence and psychology. Pathan, acceptably a high-potential all-rounder, will not be comfortable bowling in the very same place he lost all his confidence. Sreesamth on the other hand has his best bowling figures in WI itself.
Sreesanth should be picked ahead of Pathan. Though Pathan will probably be given preference. Life is never really fair.

Posted by: AK Prawat on 02/11/2007

Taking sreesanth to WI is a luxory India cannot afford, although he is a proven wicket taker, he is too expensive in ODI's. Zaheer, Agarkar and Patel are good enough to make up the seamers with either Harbajan or Kumble (not both) as thier main spin option.
Sehwag should be given a chance in the middle order and i think Ganguly and Uthappa opening is the best option for india.

Posted by: Ajay Hirani on 02/11/2007

I think sehwag should go to the world cup and so should sreesanth. Sehwag because of the experiance he has got to offer and sreeshanth because he has proven himself so far in this one day and he has bowled well in west indies before. If there is any doubt it will be over Munaf Patel. He is too inconsistant and that could cost india.

Posted by: Ankur on 02/11/2007

Sehwag in, Sreesanth out. Sreesanth isn't ready, he needs bit more experience playing ODI cricket. The WC is a very important tournament where we cannot afford to experiment. Here is the likely team:-

1. Robin Uthappa
2. Saurav Ganguly
3. Rahul Dravid
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Virender Sehwag
6. Yuvraj Singh
7. Mahendra Singh Dhoni
8. Irfan Pathan
9. Ajit Agarkar
10. Harbhajan Singh
11. Zaheer Khan
12. Dinesh Karthik
13. Munaf Patel
14. Anil Kumble
15. Ramesh Powar

Posted by: Sid on 02/11/2007

I was a fan of Sehwag 1 year ago, but the guy hasn't done justice to his potential in last one year. And if whatever has been said about his attitude is true, then his days are doomed, especially with Greg guruji at the helm. Hopefully what Greg did with Saurav works for Sehwag. If he keeps failing though, his days are numbered. I would take him to Windies only because he provides an offspin option and I really hope the time off from international cricket has rekindled the fire in his belly.
Sreesanth should also go to Windies, as we do not have better options. He's a good full length swing bowler, but needs to learn to bowl little short of a good length for one dayers. Hope he learns to do these adjustments in remaining three one days with SL.

Posted by: Raman on 02/11/2007

Hey Guys You Know What. Shreesanth is going to be picked and the mentality of Indian Team Selectors is that They See the past performance of the player not the present and they always assume a CHAMATKAR from the Indian Players, otherwise Sehwag should have been dropped a lot earlier then the W.I. Tour.

And You will find in the list Pathan, Sreesanth and Sehwag for Sure.

Posted by: John Ponnala on 02/11/2007

It will be a fatal error on part of Indian selectors if they do not pick Laxman for World cup.

Posted by: Ezhil on 02/11/2007

India must go with five bowlers, Irfan, Zaheer, Ajit, Kumble and Harbhajan and these bowlers bat a bit which may be crucial in a world cup. The team must have Dhoni or Karthik not both. Sehwag needs to be tested. Laxman fit for tests only. The squad of 14
1. Dravid
2. Sachin
3. Ganguly
4. Yuvraj
5. Sehwag
6. Uthappa
7. Dhoni
8. Karthik
9. Irfan
10. Ajit
11. Harbhajan
12. Kumble
14. Zaheer
14. Sreeshanth

Posted by: Biju Ponoly on 02/11/2007

Sreesanth must be in world cup squad. The only aggressive player after Ganguly is Sreesanth. In one day international, aggression is the best part.

Posted by: manu on 02/11/2007

i think sreeshanth should be picked and also pathan. no the given day, either one shgould be picked over the other based on the form of that player at that point in time.
my selected 15 players are:1. Robin Uthappa
2. Saurav Ganguly
3. Rahul Dravid
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Virender Sehwag
6. Yuvraj Singh
7. Mahendra Singh Dhoni
8. Irfan Pathan
9. Ajit Agarkar
10. Harbhajan Singh
11. Zaheer Khan
12. Sreesanth
13. Munaf Patel
14. Anil Kumble
15. Dinesh Karthik
although doubts remaoin over sehwags selection cos time and time again after being given warnings and having shown tremendous faith by the selectors and team he just simply throws his wicket away and the last nail in his coffin was the south africa tour. but anyway, i guess he will still be part of the team this WC. but one thing is for sure, if sehwag throws his icket away at a crucial juncture of a match in the world cup and indian loses, then sehwag maybe dropped for a reaaallllly long time like sourav ganguly.
so best of luck boys, do india proud!
