The one shining exception - India v West Indies, 2nd ODI

On a day when India batted pathetically, the one shining exception was Dinesh Karthik, who made an intelligent 63 (till he allowed himself to be bowled). Karthik is reinventing himself as a batsman, though his keeping isn't bad, and his emergence is good news for India

I think Dinesh Karthik is a good choice for the Worldcup team, because the pitches in WI is almost similar to this Cuttak pitch!...

Posted by: Vineet on 01/24/2007

Karthik's coming of age. He had the potential and he is showing it. But what surprises me is his throwing arm. Why did he ever become a keeper? Way to go karthik.

Posted by: Anonymous on 01/24/2007

Well Dinesh is a highly committed player, one who is willing to do anything for the sake of team's interest, pure team man to the core, unlike a few other senior players in the team who should learn from him!!!

Posted by: Shankar on 01/24/2007

Dinesh Karthik was a stand out person, no doubt. He showed his temperament in test match against SA recently..He is a young kid having a great future. The team think-tank has to give him a permanent spot in the team for say, for this entire series and allow him to perform without the fear of getting sidelined. We may see more good knocks from him!!

Posted by: Jeffrey Noel on 01/24/2007

Yes Karthick is now showing a lot of maturity. Good to see India giving him lots of oppurtunity. But it would not be right to directly say he is a great find. We have seen this happen in Indian Cricket. But due credit to the guy. Well played mate

Posted by: Sana ullah Khan on 01/24/2007

In fact it is a great news but as far as I am concerned the batting is not the issue with the Indian team I seriously think that Indian team desperately needs 1 or 2 World class all rounders as we all knows that there is no one in the current Indian team who you can depend as you can depend on the likes of Jacques Kallis, Shaun Pollock, Abdul Razzak & Sanath Jayasuria etc.

Posted by: Sudhan on 01/24/2007

Karthik looks a complete batsman. He Needs to be part of the team though might not always pick himself in the Playing XI. He would defenitely be a better option than Raina / Mongia / kaif. Anyways i dont think India is going to drop Ganguly, Tendu, Dravid, Yuvraj, Dhoni from the current team. Sehwag would also come back i guess.

Posted by: An excellent replacement for Dhoni on 01/24/2007

Looking back at the tour of SA too, I am of the thought that Kathick can easily replace Dhoni and we can afford an extra bowler or an extra FULL batsmen (I tend to think of folks like Laxman), as you can see, at time we will have the need of someone who can STAY at the wicket!! Kudos to Karthick! Karthick is definitely making his case stronger - by playing when REQUIRED (thats the kay)!

Posted by: Akbar on 01/24/2007

It is very true. Karthik, has a good, compact technique and has the ability to improvise. He is a natural at wicket keeping as well. But the most striking feature about him is courage and gutsy application. He was now proved, more than once that he is not baffled by the big occasion and is prepared to take the bull by the horns even while his illustrious seniors are as inconsistent as the monssons. Welcome Karthik.

Posted by: Ashesh Prasann on 01/24/2007

Karthik's emergence as a specialist batsman is commendable and good in the larger interests of the team as this gives competition to Raina and Kaif. Karthik's athletic fielding makes him a suitable replacement for them as well. What would be more interesting is that if Karthik begins to consistently outperform Dhoni, will that bring him into competition there as well?

Posted by: Mahesh on 01/24/2007

I think Dinesh Karthik proved to our 'Master Batsmen' that it is all in the mind. I think it is time to send Sachin Tendulkar to the 'nets' a la Sehwag and Irfan. Somebody once commented that one Mr.Dinesh Mongia was excess baggage. I think this comment now applies to Mr.Tendulkar.

Posted by: ravi barla on 01/24/2007

Dinesh Karthik has fully justified his inclusion in the team as a batsman. He just grabbed the golden opportunity and for sure deserves to be in the world cup team! Keep it up Dinesh!

Posted by: Bharani on 01/24/2007

Dinesh kartik should be regular member of the team since he has performed well whenever provided with opportunities and always performed under pressure.

Posted by: Shail on 01/24/2007

It is too early to say that. He played a good innings but so often we have seen Indian players playing well at home and a total failure when playing abroad.

Posted by: Varun on 01/24/2007

Thats really ture...i have to agree, Dinesh Karhik played an amazing ininnings. He stayed out there and gave it all he had, unfortunatley no one stayed around to suport him. But i think they should keep him in the line up, he has been porforming and you have to give credit for it. Well lets just that India, strikes early get WI on thier backfoot.

Posted by: Srini on 01/24/2007

Karthik has the grit and determination as he showed in South Africa and now in Cuttack. He also has all the strokes and can innovate as well.Vengsarkar should be complimented for the gutsy decision in bringing Karthik into the XI as a specialist batsman ahead of Kaif,Raina, etc., When Yuvraj returns,he may not find a place in the XI, sadly!

Posted by: sanjay on 01/24/2007

no doubt that kartik has shown class at this level in a very difficult situation. But vengsarkar is right about the future of cricket in india. there is not a good bench of batsmen otherwise kartik has never given a chance as a specialist batsman.

Posted by: Sarva on 01/24/2007

His innings just showed that the senior members just did not apply themselves and is a wakeup call for WC preparations

Posted by: venky on 01/24/2007

Karthik's batting may be good news fro India but the dilemma is can we afford to have two wicket keepers in the same XI? If Karthik deos well and Dhoni is not consistent, then he should be preferred ahead of Dhoni. On wikcet keeping abilities both might be equal. so it is consistency rather than who hits the ball hard that should count.
It is sad that the indian batting is looking so fragile these days forget the odd 300 score the other day. Really the selectors are making a mistake by dropping Laxman who can guide the team well in WI during WC. It is a pity that fielding is suggested as the reason as we have Ganguly, kumble and many who are not as good as Laxman in fielding. Can't understand how Raina has come back after being dropped after SA tour?
If ganguly can come back to ODI team then VVS also deserves as his record in onedayers over the last 5 years is better than many.

Posted by: Jitender Singh on 01/24/2007

I feel he is an asset as a live-wire fielder as well. Apart from that he is very good improviser as well. That gives him advantage over guys like Raina and Kaif, who are baggage in conditions where ball is doing something (movement or uneven bounce). He can bat in all three gears: defensive, improvised strokemaking, and fluent strokeplaying.

Posted by: a on 01/24/2007

We will know in another six months if he has reinvented or dismantled. If we know our players they come and go faster than raindrops.

Posted by: SAIT on 01/24/2007

well done karthik and he deserved to be a part of blue india for WC 2007 !. yes this kind of pitch may be encountered in Carribian. If he is given more opportunities and keep him a spot in Indian squad we can witness more outcome from this young Madras boy. GOOD LUCK KARTHIK GOOD LUCK INDIA

Posted by: selva on 01/24/2007

Dinesh Karthik is showing a lot of persistence and temperament to play long innings at crucial stages of any match. He is capable of building solid partnerships with other top order batsmen. Whatever may be the outcome of this game, i think the selectors should stick with him for the world cup matches in West Indies.

Posted by: Bala on 01/24/2007

Karthik has shown his ability to bat with the tail both at cuttak and also in south africa. This is a major quality going into the worldcup which most indian star batsmen lack. His persistence in the team as a batsman will have a constant check on Dhoni.

Posted by: shyak on 01/24/2007

karthik has got the technique, temperment and the never-say-die attitude which a very few players in world cricket let alone the indian team have. this player must not be let go off. a definite good news for india coz he is young, a vibrant new breed of fighting indian cricketers (just like the current aussies and south africans) kudos to dravid, chappell and the selectors to persist with him, great move guys!

Posted by: Maddu Shankar on 01/24/2007

Isn't he emerging as a good player. He has got good quality and eye and a terrific fielder too. Just look at the tempermant he showed after the toporder's inconsistency and inability to bat on different pitches. If not now, can we expect our team to do better in world cup?

Posted by: Ravi on 01/24/2007

Reinventing yourself aint easy and by doing just that Karthik has shown the kind of temparament required for cricket at this level. Kudos to him!

Posted by: A.S.Prathap Nirmal on 01/24/2007

I have always admired him for his agility and he is physically very fit. He is maturing very fast and bit of more exposure to International cricket will make him feel confident. We saw his skills in south africa where he opened the innings and batted beautifully in the second innings as well which showed lot of temperment. Nice prospect and has to be given enough opportunity to make him beleive in himself a lot.

Cheers,
Prathap

This once again reiterates that whoever takes his chances for granted has to be shown the door just to make them realise Indian cap is not for granted. Karthik was given number of chances when he made debut for India but he faltered and he threw his wicket away. He was dropped and now he realises that he has to perform outstandingly every match to be in contention for a place. This healthy competition between Dhoni and Karthick will have India in good stead.

Posted by: Vijay on 01/24/2007

Dinesh has absolutely come of age. The only thing that remains is to make him a permenant fixture in the team and GROOM him properly as we have seen a lot of exciting talents wade in to thin air. He should be given the proper "attitude" treament (He is already full of positive energy. But the way in which he is going, if he is consistent, he is undoubtedly the next star for India. Go Kaarthick...make TamilNadu proud

Posted by: rohith on 01/24/2007

yes this was a good innings from karthik but that doesnt mean he should be a direct selection. he definitely got the talent but he should prove more to get into the team that too ahead of mongia sewag raina kaif and all. I hope he does anyway this is a good sign for the indian cricket !

Posted by: khanna on 01/24/2007

Karthik's palce in the team would mean one of the big guns Saurav, Sachin, Sehwag, Dhoni out of the team. Who can show the door to any one of them.

Posted by: Anand on 01/24/2007

Even though he gives Raina, Kaif, Mongia and Dhoni run for the money. Everyone knows he will not be picked ahead of Dhoni, Yuvarj or Sehwag. Thats the pity state of Indian cricket. In BCCI terms, He is a very good find for the future

Posted by: MANIKANDAN on 01/24/2007

Karthik showed his class once again after his good show in south africa. While going to Worldcup, along with ganguly, gambhir, agarkar, he also sealed the berth. Hats off Man, Proud be a Indian

Posted by: Rajan on 01/24/2007

True, Karthik has done what the seniors could not do. Selection should be based on performance and not on 'State quota' basis. If selectors could put their heads together and pick a team, it will be a new era for the Indian team. Please encourage younger players and give them chances. You will find more 'Karthiks' in the team.

KARTIK has arrived there’s no doubt about it. As a keen observer of the young batting talents we have in our country one feels he is the best and a cut above the rest and since the arrival of Yuvraj he is next real find. Right from his early days what has struck me about kartik was his organized ways at the crease and one always knew there was a genuine batsmen lurking inside him waiting to bloom, provided he was given a chance. Knowing this, I was really dumb founded to read in a news paper article by Sunil Gavaskar during the South African one day series, criticizing the move to play Kartik as a specialist batsmen. The reason he gave was a real shocker – Kartik has a chance to succeed only once in ten innings or so -. that was so churlish of someone like sunny especially after seeing kartiks footwork against the SA quicks, which was far better than the so called "batting stars". Its another matter that the same Gavaskar changed his tune soon after the third test and started praising Kartik. Full credit should be given to the much maligned team management for finding that something special in this youngster and providing all the backing and most importantly the opportunity to display his talent.

Posted by: Girish on 01/24/2007

Wait! Don't jump to conclusions! Even Sadanand Vishwanath was good,so was Vijay Yadav, "chubby" Parthiv, Pankaj Dharmani etc. We should all abide by the age old adage "Form is temporary, Class is permanent", so, wait, let him prove on a longer term and then pass your comments. There are lot of things that can go wrong, if he's really focussed on his cricket, he'll make it big, otherwise, he'll fall by the way side like so many others! But yes, he's shown he's got the talent but he has to keep his head firmly on his shoulders, only then he can be a good, successful cricketer!

Posted by: Prakash on 01/24/2007

At least it is one problem area solved for Indian cricket. In the recent past we had a big problem finding a keeper who can bat and would end up having a different keeper every series - remember Parthiv Patel, Deep Dasgupta, Vijay Dahiya, Sameer Dighe etc. etc.
Now we have two decent keepers who are good batsmen as well and we must be happy for that.

Posted by: Vivek on 01/24/2007

It was a very mature innnings. Some of the shots that he played were awesome! He doesnt have the greatest technique but he surely plays the game with a lot of heart. He will give Kaif and Raina a hard time because he is a good fielder too. But I doubt he will replace Dhoni. Dhoni is the only striker in the team who can hit the ball a long way during the slog overs.

Posted by: Anonymous on 01/24/2007

It's great to see Dinesh doing so well at this level. As his former classmate and friend from school, I'm really proud to see him as the 'hot topic'. Hopefully, India will win the match from here, but it's a long shot.
I must mention something that irks me though. His name is spelled 'Kaarthick'. It's funny that with all the media exposure he is getting, nobody seems to get his name right.

Posted by: Mohammed Shareef on 01/24/2007

I agree with both Girish & Prakash. Dinesh karthik has done exceptionally well, but we should allow him to develop into a good player rather than jump to conclusions. The management has a habit of behaving like a bunch of school children chopping & changing the team everytime. Remember JP Yadav, L Balaji and more recently Venugopal rao.I agree karthik has done well but this does not mean that Suresh Raina and the like can be sent back. why doesnt the management give enough chance to deserving players

Posted by: Kit on 01/24/2007

He is a great performer. But India prefer's stars to performers. Thats what is sad. Our selectors, our media and the public will still go for the cliched star, whether it is an emerging or dying star.

Posted by: San on 01/24/2007

Its high time we start picking people who show grit and good technique and play straight. Both the critics and media seem to get carried away byt the flamboyant ones - the Sehwags, Yuvarajs and Dhoni's. No wonder they make cricket exciting, but when it comes to tough situations where one needs to win or save a test, what we need are more Dravids - forever the unsung hero. We won in WI because he (Dravid) played 2 gems, we lost in SA because he didnt - its as simple as that. And look at Yousuf yohana( Mohd now) Younis Khan - none of them are swashbucling - but they are winning paks thier tests. Lets hope DK blossoms in the Dravid(ian) mode ( oops - bad pun) than the swashbuckling flamboyant ones who thrive on the impact value rather than on consistency. Too early to go ga ga and bring about the downfall of aother talent... but lets hope he keep his head on his shoulders and reaches greater heights
