Let's talk about West Indies...

After being hit all over the park, West Indies have bounced back to ask India some searching questions - first with some excellent fielding and steady bowling, now with their strokeful batting. Let's talk about West Indies now: have they shown signs of being serious contenders for the World Cup?

any team that contains the batting talents of Lara, Gayle, Samuels, Chanderpaul and Sarwan have a chance at the World Cup. Plus its on home soil, which will undoubtedly galvanise them.I fancy them as one of the strong favourites behind only Australia.

A very erratic team, full of talent and exuberance though. They really need to sort out their game plan under pressure situations. If they are successful in doing so then i think, i will put my money on them!!!

I dont think that west indies have got the potential to be SERIOUS contenders even though they are on home soil...... but u never no with the w indies!!!!!!. I think that most likly contenders are india, austrailia, srilanka, and probaly pakistan are the ones to look out for.

I think in terms of their attitude on the field and hunger to win, this team is ahead of the previous West Indies teams in the mid 90's. However they will have to guard against their ability to collapse like pins while batting in order to have a realistic chance of winning the Cup '07. Their bowling is coming along well now.

Of course WI can win. We can beat any side on the day, all we need is consistency and some luck. It is no secret that WI have had more dismissals go against us than has any other team!

They are not serious contenders for the WC. WI is a mercurial side, on a specific day they can be champions. If they pull thru the group stages they have the potential to upset a stronger opponent. AUS remain the favorite to take the WC.

Not with that bowling attach. WI has a batting line up that can chase scores of 300+ on any given night. However, they also have a bowling attach very much capable of giving up 300+ night after night. Taylor is the only legit threat in that line up.

Given the confidence with which the West Indies have played over the past year, I'd say they're definitely in with a shot to stir things up at the World Cup. The batting has a lot more depth now than in past years, given the likes of Gayle, Chanderpaul, Bravo, Sarwan and now Samuels scoring runs in the top order over the past year. And the options granted by the bowling of Samuels and Gayle are immeasurable. The West Indies can bat deeper and pose a generally better rounded team. Then there's Jerome Taylor, potentially the talisman.

They have alway been serious contenders...they gave australia & india a very hard time in the triangular series recently. they have what it takes to win...but the question is can they perform against South Africa and Pakistan's pace attacks?

I believe that yes they are contenders if only they dont need B C Lara to bat well at all times.

I really do believe that Samuels and the Bravo are the main guys to make sure that partnerships are the main focus when the going gets tuff.

I really do wont to see West indies hold up the World Cup Trophey ahead of the Australian cricket team.

Regards.

Gary.

West Indies have down well in ODI in the past few months...but their side is relatively young and inexperienced. Yet, they have pulled off remarkable victories. If they can be more consistent in performing well, then they'll be serious contenders for the World Cup.

No...they are looking like a serious contender as they are playing against a weakended Indian team. This actually shows that Team India doesn't have any bench strength and hence their chances at the World Cup is even slimmer than the WI.

WI are feast or famine. When they become a disciplined team, and I stress team, they will be World beaters. However, I think they can win it all. They are at home and the 1-day format allows more chances for teams like WI.

Serious contenders, no I dont think so. They dont have a bowling attack as firing as Aussies or as S.Africans do. Their middle order is not that strong. They may get sailed past the initial round just because of the fact that it's played in their country.

yes they are a strong cotender to the world cup. They have a captain with brain, who knows how to manupulate the game in their home land. They are showing the guts of they can bounce any time back. hope they can keepthe same edge against Australia too in west indies.

The West Indies need to reach the semi-final stage in the world cup aleast in order to boost a revival of the sport in the Caribbean. The present team got what it takes once they can put their heads in one bag and play as a team.
I would be supporting them all the way !!!!

They still have long way , one day cricket is very funny , its all about which team performs on a given day , West Indian team has shown good performances in recent tournaments , but still lack in consistency and the Killer Instincts for me (Aus are favorites they can be seriously challeged by SA and Pak)

West Indies is missing the consistent performance of Chanderpaul. Other players are not clicking at the right time, i.e. when team is in trouble. But under Lara's captency the team is getting matured day by day. At their home, the are truely ON for the Final of the WC. But championship, that is and will be with Australia.

Posted by: Guru on 01/27/2007

West Indies should not be given all the credit. India is such an inconsistent and rubbish team that any team which plays against them will seem to be serious contenders for the world cup.

Posted by: Vijay on 01/27/2007

West Indies have their best line up in years now and considering the fact they are playing at home, they have a very good chance of making the finals. The one aspect that might go against them is their tendency to be inconsistent which may cause them to trip up and stay down till its too late.

Posted by: baggins on 01/27/2007

Whats impressed me about the West Indies is their ability to realise their limitations and play within them: Bradshaw, Powell, Taylor are not the worlds best bowlers but they bowl to a plan - on their day this is more effective than their more fancied rivals. Any side with Gayle and Lara is a batting threat, and with home ground advantage.....

Posted by: Baaskar Balakumar on 01/27/2007

well off course they are, they have Chris Gayle and Chanderpaul at the top order, and Ramnaresh Sarwan and Brian Lara in the middle order, the batting is almost perfect. Their bowlers need more practice but we know that they can pull up special things, like when Taylor got a hat-trick against Australia, at the ICC Champions Throphy

Posted by: ntutu on 01/27/2007

we all know about the west indies though, they have a remarkably ability to make comfortable situations look extremely difficult

Posted by: srinag on 01/27/2007

if lara continues to make his players believe that they are capable of beating the best in the bussiness i don;t se any reason why the windies cannot wn the worldcup
after all the worldcup is played thier home conditions
the windies have gayle and chanderpaul who have more often than not given a solid opening stand
they have in their ranks a true matchwinner in the form of bravo and their are currently the best fielding side in the world
in the worldcup sides pitted against the windies should plan an effective way of tackling the so called offspiners of samules and gayle
i herefore would conclude saying that with crowd
support a rejuvenated windies are sure to create a upset or to
