If yesterday was a near perfect day, then add that to today and together they combine to make the makings of a very special match. That is two amazing days in the sun.
As it sits, India are 267 behind with nine wickets in hand. We bowled them out 314 behind our score in the 94th over of the innings. I put that in a pretty straight forward way because it’s quite an amazing situation we find ourselves in.
After having our bums smacked in Hamilton, defeated by 10 wickets, we have turned it right around, on a very, very good batting track. We’ve given ourselves a chance to pull off a huge and special win. We’re not celebrating at all yet, but the thought is there and in the hard times that we will find ourselves in over the next couple of days, it will spur us on to go to the next level.
I didn’t have the best of days with the ball. For some reason I just didn’t have ‘it’ today. The rhythm wasn’t there, the snap on delivery wasn’t there (till later) and the result was consistency issues; I wasn’t terrible, but it just didn’t feel very good. My first spell today to Dravid and Tendulkar was not what I was after. First over a maiden the next went for eight; to straight and then to wide. And the majority of the rest of the day was similar. I couldn’t settle onto my normal lines and lengths and have a lot to thank the other bowlers for today. Martin was outstanding, Dan and Jeets (Patel) kept doing what they started the previous night and Franky (Franklin) hit great areas all day long. I felt like the weak link today, and that happens, sometime you just got to take a back seat and watch the others perform; I didn’t bowl in the 2nd session of the day because of it.
Jeets got the breakthrough for the day, Tendulkar on 49, looking to push one into the off side to bring up his 50, it takes the edge and Rossco (Taylor), at slip, takes a special catch. Jeets takes off on a celebratory run out to deep cover, I think he was happy! Thoroughly deserved and appropriately celebrated.
Jesse got the next breakthrough, his outstanding match continues. A short wide one and Dravid slashes, takes an edge and Baz (McCullum) completed a very good catch. I’d bowled plenty of those short wide ones today, and none of them even got close to the edge of the bat! The change bowler worked a treat and India were 246 for 5.
With the new ball taken and with Tommy (Martin) running hot we were treated to a special spell of fast new ball bowling. A seven over spell, taking three wickets for 29 runs turned our day dramatically. Tommy’s areas were great, asking questions with pace and a little movement with the new hard rock on the flat track.
I still wasn’t feeling great; I had the newish ball in hand and a couple of lower order batters to bowl at. What a great way to turn a day around. And then it all goes wrong, a bouncer that I didn’t bowl hard enough heads a long way over the boundary by Harbhajan, not the result I wanted. I thought I’d try him out again, this time making sure I got the bouncer up high, it worked and Tommy took a great catch at fine leg to give me my first wicket. The batters crossed and Khan was now on strike, hitting good areas was all I was telling myself. A little wide, this one, and he slashes at it, Jesse at gully, jumps and takes a screamer. India all out and we head back to the shed and then we’re all looking at each other; make them follow on or not, 314 behind, we have to, no other option really.
Tommy and I shared this new ball. These nothing quite like what a couple of wickets does for one’s confidence. All of a sudden things were feeling really good. With two wickets in two balls to close out the previous innings, I was on a hat-trick. The thing about being on a hat-trick is that you want to give yourself the best chance of taking a wicket. So fullish and straight was where I was going. Sehwag hits it back past me for four; oh that’s right, he don’t care, he’s hitting everything everywhere!
I had the snap and bounce I was searching for all day long, my areas were tight and lengths good. No wickets for me tonight, but another one for Jeets. Sehwag looking to score freely from ball one again and spin, again, was the key to the breakthrough.
So as we head into day four the team has a very good feel about it. We haven’t been in the field so long that the tiredness should affect us today. We have to hang tough to our plans and when we get it wrong get back to where we should be and let them make the mistakes. We have to keep our standards in the field and keep the energy up so that everyone can feed off it. One of the biggest days of cricket is just around the corner......
Once again a great blog Iain. Yesterday was great to watch. New Zealand really gave it their all. Good luck for today !

same old story happen again..20% chance of indian draw th game.80% loss...credit must be gone to batsmen for india performance.

Congratz man. You guys played really well and the indians seriously need to watch how intense u guys are in the field. You fully deserve to win this match and this arrogant indian side will learn to pay the price for such a foolhardy attitude before (when they blew practise and went to party in AK) and during (so many dropped catches, leaking runs easily, stupid shot selection e.g. sehwag) this match.
Loving ur blogs thou... keep up the good work... was impressed with ur dismissal of zaheer!

Sure NZ feels victory at doorsteps celebrations i feel are too early reember cricket is a great leveller in history not a single team have dominated all the seesions of all 5 days... it is impossible...so dont get complacent as indias did..hoping to win is good but i will win is over confidence so beware that the indian team is now felt the pressure and surely have put a rugged show when such a thing happens the team have backfired in all cylinders so look out for the FIRE from FAB Three they will be hogomonus and monsterous when it comes to such perilous situation esp the great SAchin if he takes on you and your colleagues it sure to have some taking to get his wicket, the price tag is not affordable for NZ so look out for the huricane at NZ doorstep ZN have already opeed the doors and IT is accomplished.... the huricane comes to Strike it off....Best wishes for survival...funny i predict it 99% of fans believe indians need to survive the ind will fight fire with fire here it comes

Hey mate, great blog!
And great work in the field out their by you guys!
Must say didn't expect the series to become like this. You got a good strategy going against Seehwag. Keep it up.
Just hoping you could answer one question of mine.
Why were you bowling so wide of the crease today??
The commentators just wouldn't stop about that.
Well good luck for day 4, and I have a feeling that the Indians will bat better this time.
Good Luck Again!!!
Cheers Mate!!

Good Show Iain....what a comeback you guys have made...This fightback from you guys will make the third test more interesting...
Dravid is the key for today's play. If you can get him before lunch, win by an innings margin is near the corner. One request...Please don't finish the match by today :P

Go for it Ian. Today is the Blackcaps day!

Good work there Iain. Well done to you and the team. With you all the way and hoping it'll be a good win for us all.
Posted by: Praveen at March 28, 2009 8:04 PM
Congratulations on the victory!
With Sehwag gone, there is no one left in the Indian batting line up to wipe out the huge deficit. Excellent captaincy by Vettori.
Ross Taylor played a magnificient innings to set the ideal platform. Jesse Ryder is turning into Mr Consistent.
Don't worry, we will get you in the third match!

Really well written blog piece.. I like the humility with which Ian has written his piece.. you guys are in a commanding position and it will take a lot of doing from the part of India to stop you guys from enjoying a special win... I am a huge supporter of the Indian cricket team but credit needs to be given where it is due..!
Posted by: Kiran at March 28, 2009 8:07 PM
Beware of the wounded tiger Iain :P. Some pretty remarkable things have been achieved by this team over the past 10 years. I wont be surprised if they add New Zealand to that list, certainly hope they do. BTW Im an India fan :) although I liked what happened to them on the third day, brings them back to ground level
Posted by: Madhan at March 28, 2009 8:15 PM
I guess you haven't seen the India Vs Australia match in Eden Gardens, Kolkata. If they can do it against the then mighty aussies then they can surely do it again against the kiwis. You are right in saying that "the biggest days of cricket is just around the corner". But its just not gonna be yours. Go INDIA!!
Posted by: shiv kumar at March 28, 2009 8:24 PM
The indian team has looked totally out of sorts right from day 1 in this test (barring the first half hr on day 1)..i know the kiwis have done well in sticking to their task but i have a sneaking suspicion india are throwing this match deliberately. First Dhoni withdrawing on the eve of the match (possibly to keep his "not losing a test" record intact), then indians dropping every catch that came their way followed by some unbelievably bad batting in the first dig. Then Sehwag tossing his wkt away in the 2nd....more to this than meets the eye?...I wonder!!
Posted by: TAHA at March 28, 2009 8:32 PM
HI Ian obrien it was gr8 day for blackcaps i think martin bowled 1 hell of a spell with the second new ball but u must be spot on from the start 2moro cuz dravid laxman tendulkar have a class of drawing that match and play out a time so hopefully u get early wickets
Posted by: Brandon Clarke at March 28, 2009 8:34 PM
I just want to thank you Ian. Firstly for bowling, batting, and fielding with guts and determination every ball of every session of every day that you wear the black cap. You make me proud, and as a result I cheer extra loudly for every wicket you get. Secondly, I want to thank you for taking the time to write your blog. It's a highlight, and I really enjoy it. There must be times when you've had a hard day, or you're on tour and you are thousands of miles from home and things are not going well, when it seems like a bit of a chore to post another entry. In times like those I hope you can remember that there are growing numbers of us who avidly look forward to reading your thoughts and views.
Keep up the good work mate, you're definitely made of the right stuff.

Ha ha, enjoy it while you can buddy, The Gods are going to turn their concerted attention to this match :) yes i do mean the Trio- sachin, Dravid and lax.. You might have got lucky that the reckless half-god self-destructed (viru), But oh boy tomorrow should be fun for all Indian viewers complaing aboutlack of second innings centuries from sachin's bat. I have the ability to see one day into the future and I am thoroughly entertained.. Oh yes, a big day is around the corner, a BIG day
Posted by: Michalite at March 28, 2009 9:03 PM
good job Ian and fellows. you guys made the mighty Indian batting line up look completely lost. I still hope Sachin, Dravid and Laxman hit double century and save the match :D
Posted by: Salil at March 28, 2009 9:13 PM
Hi Iain,
I was looking forward to see you run into Indian batsmen yesterday, but was disappointed. Hope you get your chance today.
But it was a great performance by rest of the NZ bowlers to restrict India to 300 on this flat pitch. I guess you are headed for an innings or atleast a 10 wicket victory. That will make it even stevens as we head into the third test.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Salil

Great to see bowling success on a flat track. Mr. O Brien, I am rubbing my hands together with the feeling that today the pitch might offer more assistance to the bowlers. I will keep my wishes high that today you find your rythm and the rest of the NZ bowling squad puts very special performance. I have enjoyed following the NZ team because they come up from pressure. Come on fellas, make it a win for yourselves in NZ. In the past, I have enjoyed seeing NZ win specially in NZ- beating Pakistan 4-1 and SA 6-1. Best of luck with continuing the tradition. To all the INDIAN FANS, great to see some of your reactions when India loses.
Posted by: James at March 28, 2009 9:24 PM
Good stuff IOB. Knock them over today, level the series. Some good hard grafting in the field, but if you take yoru catches and hit the wickets from the outfield, this game is there for the taking.
Good luck
Posted by: Tayeb at March 28, 2009 9:34 PM
Best of luck with bowling in the rest of the series. I am very excited to see you get in rythm today since the pitch might assist bowlers. Great teams have had been tackled in NZ grounds in the past. I hope this tradition will be upheld in this test series.
Posted by: Amit at March 28, 2009 9:46 PM
It is NZ game to draw, I think they played top quality test cricket to put them in a commanding position. India on other hand will have to dig deep and play to their potential to save the test. Good test sides have bad days, but best sides can overcome those bad days with determination and skills. India definitely has the skills, will they have the determination to put NZ away or will it be the other way around. It looks like a great test match either way.
Posted by: dude at March 28, 2009 9:48 PM
great stuff ian...congratulations beforehand becoz i know that india is going to bulge down under the pressure of 619(Rey M)..so lets hope for the best being an indian fan..

NZ is playing good consistent cricket. It would sad if India save this test. Indian always steps up to the challenge. So, I hope it will be a good contest of character and patience. I can't wait for Day 4 to start. Good job NZ!

Hi,
i am watching you play right now on TV and it is 4am in India. I think India will put up a good fight. Dravid, Tendulkar and Laxman....the key. May the best fighter win...!!
Posted by: vishnu at March 28, 2009 10:32 PM
The series is being played in an excellent spirit and the nz players are model sportsmen but the sky tv commentary is pathetic to say the least couldn't we have a more professional 2 sided commmentary.............

Gee, It's pretty quite in here today ain't it??? Usually have about a million replies by now...:p. Just kidding. Well played NZ. Good fight back after the first test. If Ind truly deserves to be called one of the best test sides, this is a great opportunity to prove the stuff they are made of. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Go Ind !!!
Posted by: Vishnu at March 28, 2009 11:57 PM
Lets see if this much-vaunted Indian side has the character and skill to be called a good side, instead of the fair-weather side I think they are. Go for the kill ,Iain!!!!!

Hello Iain. I am watching you bowl right now. Today India is showing their determination and perserverence that they have been known for as of late. I truly miss Dhoni's spark on the field, either w the bat or behing the stumps. I like to see your expressions in response to things that happen as you bowl and you do not really show any negative body language, that is exceptional and unusual. Right now, it looks to be anyone's game w only 2 wickets down and too much time remaining today and tomorrow. I wish you luck, you are a joy to see, but I am going to have to stay a true fan of Team India. Good job.
Posted by: Ravi Balu at March 29, 2009 6:24 AM
Tendulkar is a genius - Kiwis should soak in his genius when they can - if India draw this Test, Dravid, Laxman and Tendulkar deserve God like status in India

Hey Iain, well bowled today (4th Day), especially to Gambhir , u varied the pace properly, bowling slower ones and bouncers, but unfortunately the umpires weren't too favourable with LBW's and bat-pad's today.(though NZ was lucky with Dravid) But if day be4 yesterday was a near perfect day for NZ , then today was for us...this match surely heading for a draw now, SRT & Gambhir look settled.

Arrogant Comments : India will win this test !! (if not save...but will not lose)
Posted by: Saurabh at March 29, 2009 8:59 AM
Mr O Brien, the only way you could possibly get Sachin out is if you damage him physically, says a lot about your bowling. Good on you for hitting him AGAIN!! Hope Martin suffers a heat stroke tomorrow, Jeets has some sort of a stomach bug from all the curry and hopefully you will pull a hammy as well...

i think today is the perfect day for newzeland ian.great performence by newzeland today in this dead track.dravids wicket was cruial.dravid is the kind of batsman who always leaves the ball outside the offstump.very difficult to get him out,he never chases the ball outside the offstump.but today he was done by ryder, wide ball but again a loose shot from dravid.tendulkar got out for 49 that was also crucial wicket.yuvraj singh ,and karthik went cheaply.karthik got many chances for palying for india but still his performance was not been good.last time karthik got the chance to play in srilanka when doni got injured in one of the test,in that test also karthik not performed.again u bowled really well ian.u had the chance of taking hatrik, but sehwag hit for four .again match is not over yet.newzeland need to play well for last 2 days.india can save this match if they dont loose more than 2 wicket tommorow.antyhing can happen.again from my side all the best for u and kiwis for day 4 and 5
Posted by: Jeba at March 29, 2009 10:02 AM
Iain, i'm sure the Indians won't take it lying down and will definitely fight back to draw the match.... So you'd have to come up with a superlative effort to win the match! All the best!
And as one reader earlier said; "Make hay while the sun shines" DHONI WILL RETURN!

Good honest work from the Black Caps in the field again. Though great performance by India's batters today. A day full of character...well done to both sides.

After stumps most days he adds to his popular personal blog, covering his take on the play, dressing room snippets and personal insights (he really doesn’t like bouncers). A fast-medium bowler, O’Brien has become a regular member of the New Zealand Test side over the past year and is enjoying his time at the top.
