It’s been a while, right... Well, here it is, here’s the last two of the five-match one-day series. Hamilton’s weather was like the rest of the country when the New Zealand cricket team arrived; showery! The rain has plagued us the whole summer but mostly in the one-day series.
We batted first and looked pretty good by getting through to 270 in 47. Another couple of good innings from Baz [McCullum] and Jesse [Ryder] at the top gave us a great start and we probably should have scored more from there, although it was a handy score and one we could defend; if we bowled well, that is, which is what we didn’t do again.
Kyle Mills was accurate and his figures in the storm that was Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir stood out at the top of the innings. My figures took a hammering, again. I still feel like I getting through my bowling pretty well, I’m just not quite getting the accuracy that was needed in this situation. The rain played a big part in the second innings. It cut down the Indians chase, not that they needed it cutting down.
With the rate of scoring these two were going at they could have chased down our total in just over 30 overs; it was a bit of carnage out there. In any case, we didn’t do ourselves any favours in the field, a couple of half chances that on another day may have stuck, didn’t. Another amazing display of hitting from Sehwag and good rotation of the strike by Gambhir gave us a ten-wicket loss. That hurt, no one likes losing, but to get a hiding is a different story.
We moved on to Auckland for the final match in the series and guess what, the rain followed us. Thankfully it stayed away once the match got underway.
We were out for warm-ups at normal time but the drizzle came in, the covers went on and we went off. The stands were already virtually full by this point, it was a sell-out up here, and it looked like the whole of the Indian community had come to watch the match. With the amazing attendance and noise, you just have to give a big ‘well done’ to the Auckland Indian community. The previous night Rossco [Taylor] and I had gone out to Syliva Park Mall to do a signing at the Canterbury store, our clothing brand. Two-thirds of the signatures were for Indian supporters. It is amazing the support they have given to cricket since ‘their’ team has been in town. We were even lucky enough to be offered a curry from the owner of the Spice Trader food court restaurants; he had popped in while we were signing autographs. Very generous man, and a very good curry, thanks! Oh and thanks to the guys at Canterbury. I’m loving my new Warriors shirt!
I had sent Dan [Vettori] a text in the morning, before we met for our team meeting, that I wanted to open the bowling. I really wanted to take the attack to the openers. I had a plan and thought the earlier I bowl the better it might go. It worked, kinda; wasn’t quite rewarded with the wicket(s) I was after but I did cause some problems, that was till my fourth over; which went for 20. I had the ball swinging back into Sehwag and was trying to swing it away from Gambhir. For some reason I just couldn’t get my lines right to the ‘lefty’ and bowled to many wides (well, one is too many). In my fourth over I was still trying to be aggressive with my lines and lengths, Sehwag came hard back and got the better of me in that over.
I then had to retreat to the boundary to, again, lick my wounds and put in every effort in the field. Jake [Oram] and Jesse came on to bowl and changed the game. Jake took two wickets early in his spell and then Jesse picked up three through the middle order. The game had changed and we were finally in front in an ODI; it had been a while. I came back on towards the end and picked up a couple of wickets quite cheaply to finish off the innings. I’ll take the wickets but really it was like painting over rust. They made my figures look okay, but there is still some work to do underneath, and I’ll get that work done. I’m looking forward to the next bout of limited-overs cricket that I get to play!
A chase of 150 and the mood is pretty buoyant in the shed. Baz was bowled early but that didn’t stop Jesse and Martin Guptill taking the attack fully to the Indian bowlers. Jesse was special today, everything just came out of the middle and he looked the class player we know he is; no slogging, just amazing cricket shots. Guppy got into the act too hitting, again, clean cricket shots, some with just beautiful timing. Rossco finished the job with Guppy once Ishant Sharma got his man. Jesse and Ishant had had a little run-in on the field; nothing to write about, but it was exciting viewing seeing two good players, go hard at each other for a period of time. One player was dominating the other and then, in time, the other getting his own back.
It felt good getting one game back in the series, sure it was a little hollow wining a ‘dead rubber’, but they still need wining. A couple of beers and wines in the changing room, I got one of Ishant’s shirts signed up for an auction for the NZ Foundation of the Blind which will go up in a couple of days and then back to the hotel for a couple more reds.
I meet up with Mikee and Nick from Autozamm (these two wonderful guys had passed on some signed Autozamm albums for me to pass onto the guys, and we’re enjoying them, thanks heaps) a bit later in a bar and meet some of their wonderful friends. I had a great time catching up with these two and meeting the others. I was amazed at how many people I meet had either read or heard of my blog. It’s still a little weird that so many people read it. So, hi to Charlotte (C4), Tamara, Brian (about every good NZ band) and Juliet (Satellite), thanks for a great night! And to you Bridges (Z, C4... etc....), yes I know you’re reading.
We’re now in back in Hamilton, the rain has stayed away, preparing for the three test series. I’m really excited about this upcoming series. But you’ll hear enough about that over the next few weeks.
I will apologise for not getting this out earlier, it’s been a pretty tough schedule with play, travel and getting enough recovery time to sit and basically just let the brain rest has been hard. It’s not harder to sit down and do these when we lose, quite the opposite really. But I can assure you I’d rather go down the harder route and write about wins.
hmmm.. good win hopefully you carry this momentum throughout the test series good luck

I was looking for your post..more so after the 4th One Day. I was wondering if you will come back here again if India gives a clean sweep at NZ in ODIs..Thanks heaven, for that.
I am sure Indians will come back strong in Tests which might force you to go in hibernation.
Good luck Ian. Looking forward for more posts.

Nice blog mate. Looking forward to the Test Series. That last onedayer proved what we were made of. Our young players are really blossoming at the moment. Good to see James Franklin back in the side for the tests bit out batting looks a little thin on it so practise those hook shots Ian

Well,,,NZ finally saved some of the respect in front of the home crowd....but it wasn't NZ's good performance that counted rather it was India's bad day.India is going great but they should also understand when to switch gear..they can not run the vehicale in a same gear in everymatch....

I've been following the Teams from Hamilton ODI and then Auckland and now look forward to Hamilton and Wellington tests. The atmosphere has been amazing at every ground and I'm very eagerly looking forward to the series.

That was a nasty over(One you bowled to sehwag.
Good luck for tests.
Hope they prepare good bowling pitches.
I'm tired of draws in recent times(WI-Eng, SL-Pak)

HI Brien,
Nice blog and nice work done man. I really liked reading it. Nice finally you won a one. The score line is 3-1 . Nice , but you have a lot to work out in the Test series.
The likes of Rahul , Sachin , VVS will play a crucial role and you will see how good they play in NZ wickets. They are good at the moving ball and get adjusted to the wicket quite quickly. So it would be a great contest to watch out.
I think you would have seen the test series in Oz last summer. But the battle would be a nice one.
WIth the rain apart , it would be a nice battle to face...:)-
GET READY BRIEN .... Looking forward to your bowling to these legends.... Do u have a little bit patience ... Then you can succed!!! ELSE HURRAY!!!!
EASY WIN FOR the " MEN IN DARK BLUE "
Posted by: bhargav at March 16, 2009 10:26 AM
well Ian, it was a wonderful consolation win for Black Caps,The hero of the day was definitely jesse for his allround performance..The indian middle order failed this time to deliver as they lost last 7 wickets for 60 runs,,i would like new zealand to carry forward the momentum for the upcoming test series,,i wish that test series be competitive as t-20 series,,once again Ian, you must improve ur bowling to keep ur place in test squad,Hope u will comeback well in test series,
Good luck ian for upcoming test series,,looking forward for ur wonderful posts

Maybe Sehwag reads your blog and enjoys the way you write about his blitzkrieg. Maybe that's why he targets you ;)
Posted by: Debanuj at March 16, 2009 10:31 AM
Ian, you are turning out to be a better writer than a bowler..:)..And in case Sehwag decides to take a liking to your bowling in the tests as well, you know you have an alternatively career..:)..Just kiddin mate..:)
You have proved to be a cool cricketer and a free spirited blogger..Way to go Ian..:)
Wishing you all the very best as a blogger and even more as a cricketer (you need that mate, specially against Sehwag..;)
Cheers!

O'Brian,
I always look forward to your blogs. It gives me much needed insight into the dressing room envrionments and how players think instead of coming in from a reporter who is merely a spectator.
Looking forward to more of 'insider' stuff than just a match report. Love it!

Hi Ian:
I think in the last match Kiwis got it right finally. A fast pitch with good bounce made the life of Indian batsmen really tough - wonder why NZ prepared absolutely flat tracks so far!!! Also, I don't realize why Ishant Sharma is so rusty now! Possibly he needs a bit of match practice before getting on to his destructive best.
In the test series India has more worries that NZ in terms of bowling, especially the third seamer. Unfortunately, no RP, no Sreesanth and an unfit Munaf leaves the third seamer plot pretty weak and unable to sustain the pressure than Zaheer and Ishant put. Lets see what Balaji can do. NZ team, on the other hand, looks quite settled and hopefully it will be a good contest - unlike the one dayers. Hope Indian batsmen won't chicken down seeing pace and bounce. All the best!

Mate all you need to do is bowl how you did in the test against the Windies where you picked up 6fa and youll be sweet.
Loving your work mate, cant wait to see you bowl a couple of these apparent legends out ;)

hey Ian...i always look forward for your posts...
having completed the ODIs, the tests await u. you do have a breather in the fact that suresh raina won't be there in tests but then the "big messers" vvs laxman and rahul dravid come there and Sehwag has always been there...
wish u luck with them... hope to see a hard fought test series..

Yes, ian .......
Its good to see your second spell in last game.
Ryder is doing good job for your team, but you have pull up your socks for the forthcoming test series.
Very hard batting line up, you are going to face the world best batting line up.
The two walls of indian cricket, Rahul and VVS...
They can change any game..
forget sehwag worry, dravid and vvs is having the capability of standing in crease for 5 days.
work hard on your basics to bowl them.
good luck
Posted by: vinod at March 16, 2009 11:12 AM
Well you people have been able to curtail Sehwag's favourite shot, Square cut as you (Kiwi Team) have not bowled short and wide to him so that he could free his arms.
I feel that your strategy was to bowl on stumps, but let me tell you he is very strong off his legs as well. He flicks as good as any one else in the game. Though pull and hook shots are not his strengths, but he unleashed pull shot so many times during this tour and on account of square boundaries being so short in New Zealand, most of them landed in stands.
The best way of getting him out is to pitch the ball about 9 inches outside the offstump on a fullish length and swing it back. Otherwise, Ian the short boundaries are going to be peppered once again in the test series.

Well done Ian. I love your blog because it reminds me that even in today's world, there are sportsmen who play to win, but are still able to enjoy the game when opponents win, give them credit and want to go against them again. In fact, the whole NZ team has been awesome, and watching you guys play should also teach one or two of the Indian team a lesson or two. I hope the test series is a good one and I hope it is played the way sport is supposed to be played.
Keep blogging Ian, I will read your blog as a fan, no matter what the result of the test series is.

Ian..
Your blog is good but for most part it is like a first person account of prematch travel and only of your own bowling. It would be much better if you could present a cricker's analysis of the matches which would enable non cricketrs (like me) to understand and enjo the game more. And if you remember I had told you only if you face and beat demons, angels will let you see them.Last blog you had mentioned about them. There is no mention about them this time around.Hope they have vanished for good.Keep going yaar(means mate in Hindi)and all the best for tests.......

I was expecting your Blog after 4th ODI but seeing it after 5th ODI make sense becoz in the 4th match NZ was completely outplayed by India the Vice versa in the 5th match. I have seen your 1st spell in the last match and it is outstanding one to shewag. It made me more excited about the upcoming test match series. All the best Ian.....
Loves to see the indian batsman scoring in the seaming condition
Posted by: Vinay at March 16, 2009 12:10 PM
Your line and length were wayward... particulary to Sehwag in the 4th ODI... need to pitch it in the right places mate if you need to make a better bowler of yourself...
Posted by: vamsi at March 16, 2009 12:14 PM
Hai ian it was the first blog that i was following and eagerly waiting for updates,i know the reasons why you hasn't updated it after fourth match because my self is bowler for my college cricket team.hey yoru fisrt ball in 5th odi was really amazing,i thought you may write something about that, that shows how varient you are,you had bounce and swing but unable to contain and get wickets what factor making out them i feel its just luck noting any,but coming tests it differs try to bag some wicktes.coming india's batting line up in tests all the same you played in onedays but dravid and laxman comes in who can really offers diffrent kind potentital so for you personally it will be great challenge to bowl against them,i hope this time you may succeeds against sehwag all the best ian.
Posted by: Rodney at March 16, 2009 12:34 PM
Iain, when you bowl against Sehwag put a fielder in a widish 3rd man and pitch one just short of a length outside off. He will go for it and hopefully will get caught by that 3rd man. Go around the wicket to Gambier and swing it toward him. Pitch it up to the master at the start of his knock as he will be vunerable to the lbw.
Hope that there is no rain as I am going to be watching the whole night from not so sunny Scotland

Ah one thing i would like to know before i leave. Do you think this One day of India is the best ever that you have seen. i definitely think so they are in the one dayers and T20s. On another note i do believe you are a better bowler than we have seen so far. Cheers...

Iain, All the best for the tests. Tip from an ametuer - focus on the inswinger of yours if you want to taste success against the likes of Sehwag, Tendulkar and Dravid. Watch the tapes of their past dismissals....

Posted by: TINO at March 16, 2009 2:23 PM
LOLS O'brien, you should really spend your time on training than adding t your blog only when you win. Why did you not add to your blog when you lost the ODI series last match. You kno wht the funny thing is...if India had a clean sweep in ODI then NZ would have said that 'oh we clean sweapt the twenty twenty and they did it to us in ODI so its one all' LOLS....3 all you have t be kidding me.....yesa it is a positive way to look at it but all the truthful followers of cricket know that twenty twenty win is nothing compared to an ODI series win. For me ODI is nothing compared to a test series win. A test of true skill and play making (strategy). Anyways hope India can win the first two tests and then loose the third to keep the amateur NZ's interested in the game.
Posted by: bala at March 16, 2009 2:37 PM
Hi ,I think you started splendidly in the final ODI.It was nice to see you showing concern for the opposition batsman,Praveen Kumar I think, after striking him with a vicious bouncer. If you can get our Sehwag cheaply in the tests you really stand a good chance of winning as Dravid our wall and has developed few cracks of late. All the very best and keep writing.
Posted by: musad at March 16, 2009 2:40 PM
iain, cheers...
i just loves ur blogs man..
all the best for the test series, hope the run per over barrier may not be important in this form as in odis, to getting the top three indians, just bowl on off and outside off and also the inswingin deliveries, they can not stand the pressure for too long. dont worry if they go for kill in the initial overs you will bw credited with wickets..its a sure fact. hope u will come good in tests.
Posted by: Siddharth HK at March 16, 2009 4:27 PM
Great to see an Indian victory in the ODI series. Although, I am a bit concerned about the Indian bowling. We've just not been able to put a lid on NZ's scoring as well. Ryder and McCullum have have a party everytime they've come out to bat. If India bowled first, they would have won the 5th ODI too, Dhoni admitted to misreading the pitch! Anyway, onto the Tests now, I'm sure India also have the confidence of winning their first ODI series and will let it rip in the Tests with Sehwag and Gambhir in decent form. If Dravid can bat like he has for India, barring the past year, NZ is in for a long test series also. There will be some closely fought sessions, but I expect India to come out on top. Having said that, may the best team win!

I was eagerly waiting for your blog after every match. You know, i read your blog because you write about Sehwag(i am a big fan of him) and of course you write your blog really well.
All the Best for upcoming test matches for both Teams ( especially for Sehwag and you)!!!!!
Posted by: vinod dhar at March 16, 2009 4:39 PM
Well Rodney, what you suggested to Ian would be a good thoery to practice on MCG or atleast on some bigger grounds. However with the boundaries being so short on most of the New Zealand grounds, what you suggested would not be a good idea, on the contrary I would say that might create a situation wherein he shall get stuck into Kiwi bowlers and put them into stands over Third man when ever provided with an opportunity.
Man, his upper cut is really ferocious. New Zealand grounds are not big enough to accomodate that sort of a shot.
Only solution, pitch about 9 inches outside off and zip it in........
However I would like Sehwag to score bib big and big.

Well as usual we Indians don't see the subtle message in this great blog from Ian. When I was young, while watching a India Vs Pakistan game played in India, I used to get furious when certain Indians born and raised in India supported Pakistan openly for religious reasons.
I feel ashamed that we Indians living abroad turn up in huge numbers when India is playing NZ. Otherwise, we don't even go and support the country which gives u bread.
I feel quiet ashamed of this behaviour from my country men.
Anyways Ian, great blog once again. Only you and Dan look like taking wickets mate. Rest I am not sure..

it was poor batting display by indian team after sehwag had a gud start n middle order collasped once viru was out and nz chased it well n gud batting by ryder n guptil...i had a question tht who was the man of the series??

Cant help but notice most of the readers have got your name wrong; can get quite irritating...or maybe you are a.k.a. Ian? I've read few of your recent posts and they are very interesting and insightful. Dont be too hard on yourself; although its a fact that sehwag and sachin are very special batsmam and deserve their due credit for fantastic innings, the figures of celebrated Indian bowlers (Zaheer, Ishant etc...) are none too great. So it seems that pitch, ground conditions also had a big say in matches and usually were stacked against bowlers in general.
Hope to see a good contest in test matches. All the Best!
Posted by: SehwagFan at March 16, 2009 5:44 PM
Attention Sehwag, theres an international conspiracy going on plotting your early dismissal. Iain seems to be leading the effort. Beware of their 3rd man and inswinger ploys. It would help to get the umpire to your side.
Fun apart, now that pajama cricket is done with, I give NZ an equal chance in the test matches. They have an element of surprise and home turf backing them, both factors being formidable.
Posted by: Gurucharan at March 16, 2009 6:00 PM
So there we are. The tests are about to begin and along with them the true tests of this all conquering Indian team. They were at their aggressive best in the ODI series except the last game. I think the Indians got a bit too carried away with their confidence and thus spilled a golden chance to keep the board clean.
The saga of ODI marauders is gone and here comes the more sane version of cricket, 'The Test series'. Oh Boy!Its pretty difficult to predict a winner here. I would still say this though basically I am an Indian fan becoz my perception is that the pitches for the tests will be more livelier compared to their ODI counterparts.
So one could be quite optimistic about a more balanced and a humdinger of a series. But remember India have their own set of 'Mr.Specialist' batsmen for the tests. Anyways wishing u Good luck Ian. I wish the ball moves not around the park but around the bat this time n we get to c yet another fascinatin series to enrich the treasure of cricket.
Posted by: Karthik at March 16, 2009 6:06 PM
Ian, good description of your daily work. Must be tough to explain how you try to bowl decent line and length and yet get spanked. Apparently you have better test performance oflate. One tip. Sehwag is not going to hold back in Tests. He will come after you with same intensity.
Posted by: rshn at March 16, 2009 6:09 PM
I cant believe kiwis are so pumped up beating India in one match. A gentle reminder, It was a dead rubber, Series has been won already and cant help to laugh looking at kiwis harping about one win. 390+ score, 200 for no loss in 23 over... thats humiliation. Time to add some skill, this is an international match, Indians are looking for some fight, dont think they will get one in this tour.
@Madnira : Fast bowling from nz you said huh!... I must confess, the nz bowling lineup is nothing but club cricket standards, Im sorry but you have taken only 4 Indian wickets in the first 4 games, while you guys got hammered. Thats no skill. I guess its high time you do a reality check!

Hey Iain
That first over you bowled to Sehwag - that was wicked, I never thought you are capable of that (lol). You could be a handful in tests. But do remeber to throw in a few freebies inbetween.
Cheers
Posted by: john at March 16, 2009 7:13 PM
I think the main threat comes from dravid and tendulkar as opposed to sehwag, dravid has had a fair amount of practice recently in NZ and done well both him and Tendulkar are technically correct enough to handle swing. Bowl inswingers to Tendulkar and Sehwag very full to Laxman and outswingers to dravid and gambhir and im sure youll be fine.

Heyy Iain,
I must say NZ bowlers were slaughtered through out the series though the rain had its part.O'course one can seldom restrict hard-hitters like Sehwag,McCullum on such flat wickets.
Its good to see black caps coming fine in the final one-dayer.I guess Indians might be trying real hard to straighten out the things that went wrong.
Anyways,a fantastic series win for the Indians giving them some moral boost right ahead of the "Test" series.
Posted by: Rahul at March 16, 2009 7:29 PM
hey Ian I actually came to know you through your blog. You got hammered by shewag in both 4 and 5th odi. But its alrite the pitch was flat and the ground was small. Almost all bowlers got hammered(both Ind and NZ).I think you can bounce back in test.Don't forgot to take some advice from Shane Bond and remember that Shewag is more dangerous in test (bat avg abt 50) rather oneday (bat avg 35).
Posted by: duncansdad at March 16, 2009 7:31 PM
Nice effort and great blog. I didn't think your over for 20 runs was as bad as all that - you created two catch chances and Sehwag was lucky. Take away that 20 runs and the rest of your figures were fine. Now for the main course! Dan needs to win the toss and bowl, you and Kyle and Chris and Jimmy need to get 4 wickets in the first session - game on!
Posted by: millz at March 16, 2009 7:51 PM
Hi Ian,
Just a quick note wondering if you actually no where fine leg is supposed to stand I'm sure i saw shewag hit one down there and you might have been more deep square leg or is that where Mills wanted you he did not look to pleased

@rshn
Club cricket standards you reckon? Do yourself a favour and have a look at the current ICC ODI Bowling rankings and show me a 'club' that has two bowlers in the top ten. And while your there, tell me how many Indian bowlers are in the top ten too?
@everyone else - it's this sort of ill informed rubbish from Indian supporters that gives most of you a bad name. We have huge respect for your team, your players, your supporters, and your people; and what you've done for cricket over the last two-five years, especially giving the Aussies some curry!... but some of you need to think a little before you post.
Looking forward to a great test series - India are clear favourites and (on paper) should win three-nil... but I can't see that happening. And I do hope to see Jimmy show some of his capability with the bat... as well as JR, Baz, Guppy and Rosco... will also be good to see how little Dan (F) comes back too :)
If only our best bowler was allowed to play!
Be safe, keep smiling

I usually do not post comments on Iain's blogs, but I've noticed that many comments are highly partisan; Iain's posts themselves are hardly so. This comment is in response to "rshn" who claims that NZ bowling is of club cricket standards. An attack that gives the Aussies a hard time cannot be of club cricket standards. If they are, they bowled out India for under 150 in 36 overs; what does that tell you about our (indian) batting?
The fact of the matter is that our great batting lineup crumbled in the face of some good bowling. Dead rubber or not,
They humiliated us right back mate. It wasn't a charity match, even if it was a dead rubber. It had to be treated as such. They knocked off our target in
Who's got his head buried in sand?
Posted by: Brian at March 16, 2009 11:23 PM
Good result, 3-3 after six matches against the 'mighty' Indians. NZ has the superior bowling attack; can the Indian batting lineup handle a seaming wicket after the flat tracks? Doesn't look like it after Auckland... it'll be 2002 all over again.

Hi Iain, keep up the good work. A great read I enjoy getting the true insight into the thoughts of a professional cricketer
Posted by: nick Gentle at March 16, 2009 11:40 PM
Hopefully the pitch at Hamilton is less of a road to give the bowlers a chance. Nobody wants to see 600+ vs 600+
Posted by: JMKRaja at March 17, 2009 12:01 AM
Nice blog mate..
I was there to catch u guys live in Eden park. The Crowd was amazing- it was like watching match in INDIA.
Indians mis-read the pitch and chose to bat.i felt, it could have been a different match if Indians could have bowled..
Anyways you guys played well.. i could see you putting full effort to outplay sehwag..
i enjoyed few shots from Guptil who played for my Suburb-Newlynn :-)
Will be eager to see you guys putting up a good show against indians in the Test Series..
FYI: Try getting a Shirt from Sachin- Could fetch more so that it would be beneficial for foundation.

I don't knw if you are in the test team. But if you wish I can give you some bowling tip, which can work for you . Mail me if you need it .
Posted by: V Raju at March 17, 2009 12:26 AM
My 1st tip to you: Its easy to get early, else you can't get him. Sehwag feeds on pace. If you try to bowl to him outside the off stump a bit slow ,but on good length or full (with a point and deep point) you can get him. Try it ...
Ian it will work
I can give you tips for Yuvraj,Laxman,Gambhir too... Tendulkar is god.... Try few bouncers on a good day you might get him...

Hi Iain, always read your blogs, thank you! just go back to the basics in your bowling for the test seris and think about what you did against the West Indies/Australia and you will be fine. Time to show these Indians some curry! good luck mate. Regards
Posted by: pva at March 17, 2009 12:37 AM
I was worried looking at the feedback on the last blog entry that you might get some handy tips against Sehwag. Glad to see it didn't quite work out! Jokes aside I've actually seen you come up the ranks in State's cricket (especially 06/07 - blew 'em away mate!) and hope you do well, whatever the expense our 'Boys in Blue' may incur. A lesson to learn from Ishant Sharma. During the game, stick to your plan. Experiments are for the nets and are to be worked out in the nets. What you sacrifice in flexibility, you earn in wickets.
Good luck with the series mate and, if it doesn't work out, there's always the alternative career you're working so well on.
Posted by: pva at March 17, 2009 12:42 AM
Oh yea, beatiful movement first up. I know the conditions were great but still good to see someone getting the ball to talk. Reminded me of what the Indian seamers did in Autralia last year. Maybe put it to more effect in the test series eh!
Posted by: Rohit Sharma at March 17, 2009 3:48 AM
Hi Ian.......
I am predicting a drawn test series if weather remains clear.I feel this time the focus has shifted from seam boelers to spin bowlers, because of the flat tracks obviously. I feel Sehwag and Vettori will be the determining factors of the series.
Good luck and enjoy mate. Looking forward to your upcoming blogs...

Hi Ian,
I have been reading your blog all throu' this series. I should admit that I become your fan. You are really a true cricketer and good person. Keep up the good work. Good luck with test matches. I watched your bowling in the final ODI to sehwag and gambir which is fantastic.

HI IAN,
First of all thank you for the blog. you are just a fine person than just a cricketer.i always see your blog to be updated but this is my first time i am writing. Ok congratulations, for your consolation win over the men in blue in the dead rubber. anyways what is important is the win and you guys have done it in the final match. thanks to ryder who bowled superbly and batted awesome. it wasnt the day for the indians and they really did struggle. i think the indians didnt read the pitch well and were over confident that did them in this match. nevertheless it is time to prepare for the test series now and you know what to expect from the indian strong batting line up and the accurate pace from both the ends. this can be new zealands tuftest series in home after a long ago. watch out black caps.
Posted by: donthaveaclue at March 17, 2009 5:19 AM
great blog ian. fantastic to get an insider's view of international cricket. but sehwag's innings would have to be one of the most destructive you'd have seen. i've blogged on outsideedge.wordpress.com about the force of nature that is virender sehwag.
Posted by: Anoop at March 17, 2009 5:38 AM
Hi Ian
Well done. You guys outplayed Indain's in all the forms. The pitch was not that bowling friendly. But bowlers got more support compare to other Pitches. But if Indians got adjusted to Pitch the game should be more intresting.Ian,the first over you bowled to Shewag was teriffic.
We would like see a good competion between Bat & Bowl in the test series....
Posted by: BHARATH at March 17, 2009 5:53 AM
hi
your bowling was good in the last match(particularly the first two overs.)its a pity you didnt get wickets.you bowled well in the first 20-20 but the indians are trying to unsettle you by going after you.however in the test match the key will be rahul dravid.he's going to bat whatever the pitch is. all the best for the test series
Posted by: Bala at March 17, 2009 6:13 AM
Ian,
Good blog. It was great seeing you open the bowling and I hope the tests are fought on pitches that offer both batsmen and bowlers sth - that would be a great contest.

@ Just another boy from Petone (near the Rec)
Now, now - I thought your comment "@everyone else" is a bit of a generalisation. Almost all the Indian fans who posted here were full of praise for Iain and wished the NZ team well. Granted, there were a couple of nutcases like rshn, but that's hardly 'everyone', is it now? or do you see all Indians as one glutinous mass incapable of individual expression on their own?? Looks like it to me
To Iain: Good show, mate! Keep up the good bowling and show some of the fight we all know you have!
Posted by: Sankar at March 17, 2009 6:37 AM
couldn't agree more with "Just another boy from Petone". Some of the posts here from some of the Indian supporters are embarassingly arrogant, and frankly out of tune. We are just starting to perform well, and such disdain doesn't bode well. If we can win the test series, great, but we need to show a little bit of respect to the competition. We cry foul about Aussie arrogance, but some of the team's behavior on the field and some of our supporter reactions off the field, lack dignity.
Posted by: Pradeep at March 17, 2009 7:38 AM
Hi Brien, am sure you read Mark Richardson's article on cricinfo homepage about New Zealand's bowling depth. Some good words to say on our fav' blogger, nice to see that.. Hope you'd live upto his (& our) expectations in upcoming Test series.

Good post once again. Do continue posting Ian. Win or Lose its always nice to share the experience !!!

@Just another boy from Petone (near the Rec)And Arun: I was just responding to "Madnira". Ok, Sit back and think, does this Nz team have the goods to win matches in India, Srilanka? Dude, Good thing about this Indian team has been its bowling. This Indian team has broken the back of SA in England, Australia and England in India, Australia in Australia and India and the Srilankans in srilanka. Does this Nz bowling have it in them to perform consistently against these teams? Ask yourself.

Hi Iain,
Just read you blog. Though I don't find time to follow it regularly; however, I have been reading it as often as I can.
Very well written blog.
Accept my heartiest wishes.

Hi Ian,
Nice win mate! I gotta say we were outplayed. Though dont take a sigh of relief just coz ODI's are over and now its test cricket. I play only in 1 gear, that is top gear. So be prepared for some more whipping. Nothing personal mate, its in the game.
Virender Sehwag
P.S: your blog really helped me countering kiwi attack. Thanks,i am looking forward to next one.

Iain - Interesting to read your addictive blog again.
I like your fighting attitude mate!
In 5th ODI NZ stuck to basics of seam bowling & Indians simply caved in!
My view is that the series stood at 3-3 (counting the two 20's match) and not 3-1. Which implies, its all even Stevens!
The real test starts tomorrow, when the past shall only be statistics and history.
India got to be cautious, and take it easy in the first few hours, if they bat first. Alternatively, use the early morning conditions to the likes of Sharma and Khan for swing bowling.
would be fun to see likes of Dravids, Laxmans, Sehwags, Tend's take on charged up McCullums, Ryders, Vettori's!
I pray for no rain and a good gripping match.
Last, I express my disappointment over Sony TV's request on change of Test Timings for their commercial gains.
I stay in Netherlands, and watched ODIs from 3 am. I remember back in India, as a kid, I used to get up at 3/4am to see India take on NZ in NZ!
I now await your 1st-test blog :)
Posted by: Sampath at March 17, 2009 10:26 AM
I think the loss margin Indian team suffered in the last match showed that they were not the better team by miles as the series result would have indicated.
On a good batting track Indian team's batting rises majestically but on a track which offers little bit of seam the current team looks vulnerable.
So the key for the NZ in tests is to get Sehwag out early on and get at the middle order. Gambhir is a player to watch out. He hasn't had a good time with the bat so far but test cricket gives just that time and space to get into the groove while one day cricket is unmerciful.
It will be interesting to see how Jesse, Martin and Ross will play. They look pretty admirable.
Ian, I wish you to do well.

Iain, I'd almost given up on you. Thought you'd scrapped your blog after the hiding you'd got from Sehwag and Co... Good to see you back in the blogosphere after you managed to win the final ODI. You'll have to plan and execute better against the marauding Indians though for they could well post 500 runs in each innings of the Test series! You have some hope with your off the field activities though...good to see all the endorsements and charities you're into. And your blog is a winner!
