Beating the world champions was amazing

Posted by Iain O'Brien on 02/26/2009 in India in New Zealand 2008-09

Winning is an amazing feeling and it's not necessarily something we've done enough of in the last 12 months. Last night was amazing. Last night we won. Not going to get carried away, but it was a great feeling beating the world champion Twenty20 team.

From the previous evening when we had had a very good 'scouting' session to crossing the white line last night just before 7.00 pm I had a pretty good feeling about this match. Our 'scouting' notes were as complete as I've ever seen, it's not a complete document by any mean stretch of the imagination, but it's a very good place to start and we've added to it since last night; it's evolving. In fact the first thing I did after we came off the field was to write down some notes on a couple of their batters, I spied Dan doing the same thing, we'll discuss these before the next T20 in Wellington and rework some of the plans from there.

There is huge interest here in NZ for this series as I'm sure there is in India. There are a lot of excited Indians living here as well as the NZ public who have been looking forward to watching some of the most talented cricketers on this earth play on our soil. While walking around Christchurch there has been a lot of well wishes coming from the friendly public, it's an enjoyable thing when a stranger walks past and wishes you luck for the match and series. I really hope the crowds come out and support us at the grounds, like they did last night, and make it as fun as atmosphere as possible.

So, the game … Dan won the toss, again, it is ridiculous how many he wins; never gamble against Dan, or do so and Dan, I'll take a cut! Oh yeah, Dan chose to bowl first.

It was to be Timmy and I to open the bowling and he'd get the first over, not quite the start we were hoping for though. Sehwag was amazing in the short time he was out there. With him and Gambhir opening the innings it's fair to say I was pretty nervous heading into my first over after Sehwag had taken Timmy for 19 off the first. From the notes we had gathered on these batters I had made some shorter notes that I had on a piece of paper in my pocket. I referred to these quite a few times while we were out there, in time I'll have them in memory, until then, I don't mind having to refer to my notes so that I am not getting the plan wrong. A quick little school up on them both and I'm into it. I felt pretty good, I did notice myself running in to hard for the first ball and pulled it back before I got to the crease, relaxed into it and got off to a nice start. I finished the over in the best way possible, a smile on my face, a leap and punch in the air, a whole heap of high fives and middle stump lying flat on the ground; now that is a great feeling! Gambhir, one of the danger men, gone but no chance to relax because there's a whole heap of those danger men to come.

I wouldn't normally recognise that I was running in too hard until maybe my second over. I was really pleased that I picked up on it first ball and gave me ever chance to get it right throughout my spell. I started my second over the same way I finished my first, except it was leg stump lying on the ground this time; they must have watered the stump holes to help them come out when hit, don't mind that as it does look good when a stump comes tumbling out. That's Sewhag out, 26 off 10 balls, one of the most destructive batters in the world and we saw, first hand, how destructive he could be in his short stay. Jake did say to me, ironically, in my second over that “we might be able to get this ball to reverse later” after the punishment the ball had taken while being hit at, into and over the new stand in construction.

I finished my first two overs with figures of 2 for 13, not the worst start and was feeling good getting around the park, fine leg to fine leg a couple of times, anywhere to keep out of the action as my fielding is a 'work in progress'. I'm not that bad but I'm certainly not as good as some of the others. Baz is always on my case with my throws to him and I was pretty happy not to get a angry look, a shake of the head or some 'expressive encouragement' from him the few times I had to get the ball back in; I'm working on it, but I do think I have the 'yips' when throwing back to him.

I came back for an over in the middle stages with the hope of a wicket, defensive plan to Raina and on the hunt to IK Pathan, the over went for five, happy with that, but no wicket. At that stage an over of five we were pretty happy with and that gave me three overs for 18; not bad with this batting line up. Alas, from there my figures then took a hit. I bowled the 19th over, Raina, still in and playing a great knock, with Harbhajan on strike. My plan was to try to keep Harbhajan on strike as long as possible and try not to bowl to Raina; it didn't quite work out like that. Single off the first ball brought Raina on strike, it's now my job to get him off strike with a single, hit the hole with a yorker and hope it just goes for one. I was slightly too full and he hit a low full toss over the small boundaries for six, damn! An adjustment next ball and I'm just slightly too short giving him the chance to get under it, and he did, it went a long way up and with Guppy under it I thought there was a chance for him to catch it; not quite, it just sailed over his head for another six. Dan and I changed the field and changed the plan as that one wasn't working, the boundaries here in Christchurch just are not big enough to keep with the original plan. Dot ball, brilliant and then he's sliced me past third man for a sweet four; not much I could do about that, Dan and I looked at each other, shrugged our shoulders, it was a good ball and he's got it away, fair play young man!! Just a single off the last ball and there's 18 off an over that actually wasn't that bad in terms of execution, although not perfect, sometimes it happens that way. I was a reasonably happy lad walking off the park, after the explosive start India got off to, the skilled hitters they have and the small boundaries 162 was going to be a tough score to defend.

We got off to a slow, or measured, start and lost Jesse first ball from Sharma in the second over of the innings. Wickets always slow run-rates down and it did exactly that! Nine runs of three overs is a slow start but that was all it took for the lads to find their timing. Fifteen of the next Sharma over and then 11 of Khan and we're back on track, looking pretty and feeling good.

All the guys from there played really well, Rossco just continued on his great form, Baz played the anchor role and batted though and with Jake coming in at the end blazing 29 off 15 balls in his comeback match we had the game won with seven balls to spare and some power hitting still in the shed; not a bad place to finish a game!

A very happy changing room, we didn't have the luxury of being able to sit around at the ground for to long as it was a pretty early start this morning, a short turn around between games and training this afternoon meant it was a pretty early night.

Back in Wellington now, it's tea time and I'm starving! The last couple of days have been huge for my blog, over 20,000 more views yesterday alone. Thanks for the support and for the sometimes 'crazy' messages left on the comments.....

I did bump into a mate at the end of the game who I hadn't seen for a while. Mikey from a pretty damn good NZ band called Autozamm, along with his mate Nic, also from Autozamm, who had been playing 'O' week in Christchurch, had changed their flights to stick around and watch this match, so when I heard they were out the back I got myself off there for a catch up. Last time I saw them they were opening for Powderfinger and Silver Chair, and of those very good bands Autozamm easily were the best on stage that night, they cleaned up. Good to see ya mate and I'm looking forward to seeing you play again soon!

A great victory, Iain, and a great post. One of the highlights of the match for me was seeing the expression on your face when you bowled Gautam Gambhir.

For the benefit of overseas readers who just might get the wrong idea, 'O' week is Orientation week - the week when all the new University students get to settle in to their dormitories, go to see bands, hook up, etc. before the serious University work begins.

Hi Brien,
I am a diehard fan of Indian cricket rather world cricket.
But the way you have explained in your blog about each and every over.... it was great... felt like I was with u on the ground... Please keep writing these blogs.
All the best for the 2nd T20 match... Though I pray for India to win.

Posted by: Marco at February 26, 2009 10:43 AM

Nice effort Iain. You and the boys really put those over the top pro India supporters to bed. Hoping for another feast in the cake tin tomorrow and let's hope the NZ weather holds up and you take plenty more Indian scalps in the upcoming weeks.

Great blog Iain, really enjoy reading these. You've turned into a great bowler and I really enjoy watching you bowl, keep going Iain O'Brilliant.

started with andy's blog, and got hooked to yours. whats strange is that wen i see you on the field, i feel as if i know you!! though you doin your earliest reader a disfavour by skittling out indian openers :-)

Posted by: Jojy John Alphonso at February 26, 2009 11:31 AM

Your first spell dictated the Indian innings. They never really recovered after that. On top of that, Vettori was pretty miserly too. I am rooting for an Indian win in the 2nd match.

Posted by: SYAMKUMAR at February 26, 2009 12:49 PM

this may be the last victory for nz against india...bcoz our team is so good to beat...luckily we missed the trick but i am sure that it won't be repeated...

Posted by: Jon Cocks at February 26, 2009 12:51 PM

Fascinating stuff, Iain. I followed this blog a bit when you guys were here in Australia. Good on you for making the effort to give us the players' point of view. To the best of my knowledge, no Australian player has done it.

And well done for knocking India over. Largely due to Harbhajan Singh, I have lost any sympathy for India.

Naturally, I expect us to beat you guys and when we don't, it is like a small death. However, I tend to barrack for you against almost everyone else. Especially India.

Posted by: Munish Sharma at February 26, 2009 12:59 PM

You were great with the ball yesterday.. Your first two overs almost sealed the match for your side as you get rid of Sehwag and Gambhir. Well done..But just to remind you that India will turn things tommorow. And you need not to write that you made some note about Sehwag and Gambhir and kept them in ur pocket as that was part of ur game plan. Hope Sehwag hasn't read ur blog. All the best for tomorrow.

Posted by: Dhanesh at February 26, 2009 1:04 PM

Congrats Ian... You were brilliant that night! Especially against Sehwag in that mood, i thought you bowled superbly. I can't recall anyone cleaning up Sehwag in that manner for a long long time. And Gambhir too for that matter. But tell Dan to watch out for Yuvraj in the second T20i. He hates getting out to spinners. And also that me and my wife are his die-hard fans! And now you also figure in that list. Ian O'brien... We'll remember you...

Posted by: Anish at February 26, 2009 1:11 PM

Iain, great bowling! You surpassed yourself in the first 3 overs; probably the best I have seen you bowl in recent matches. You guys were the deserved winners as you played sensible cricket and had a more balanced side. Its amazing how Oram always comes into form against the Indians. Same goes for Vettori with the bat, though he is yet to get a chance to show it this time around.

Posted by: Girish at February 26, 2009 1:11 PM

Great blog mate...neat description of the match. Sleep well tonite...u shall have sleepless nights from Sehwag from tomorrow! U just saw the trailer yesterday.

Posted by: Suh at February 26, 2009 1:13 PM

Hey Iain,
Really enjoyed that...Yes i'm Indian and yes I love Indian cricket but i'd have to say that you guys are great blokes..Very approachable and its great. I've had the chance to bowl at you guys in Adelaide on a couple of occasions and absolutely enjoyed it. I really wish you all the best and hope you guys keep improving with every win and gain in confidence. Our Indian team can do with a confidence bashing cause almost all of them think they're gods gift to mankind..Except a few..So please drop a catch or 2 when Dravid or Laxman bat cause I'd pay just to watch them..Or Ross Taylor for that matter..Anyway..Good luck..

Posted by: Jay at February 26, 2009 1:16 PM

Did you surprised yourself when you got both Viru and Gauti? You gave strange expressions that day.

Posted by: Babu Rao at February 26, 2009 1:16 PM

Hi O Brien,

Happy to see a bunch of young Kiwi legs overtaking the Indian lads...The way u narrated the match over by over is quite interesting.

Hope the whole series will be a tough contest...
I wish INDIA to come up with flying colours in the coming matches..

Hope u will also enjoy the run feast of Yuvraj, Sehwag and Yousuf in the days ahead

Take care

hey iain don't u get happy just by thinking u bet the world champs ....... u don't know much about dhoni and his troop ,they're tough guys. And congrats to u and for ur win anyway , but remember the next time u write ur blog it'll be a sad story ..... my best wishes to u and danny vetts

ur bowling was awesome, keep it up chap..
and one more thing is can u do something in the ground after taking a wicket for your 20000+++ readers.. .i mean, something like, sohaib akthars flight.. dwayne bravos high fives.. brett lee's pump.. do something for us.. please

Great work nice blog. First time a cricketer has
managed to explain what the spectators are aching to hear. Keep the good work its really nice to know what goes on the field and the innerworks. We can this way easily align with the personality while watching the game. GOOD SHOW.

Posted by: Alex at February 26, 2009 1:28 PM

Good bowling Ian. By taking wickets , you earn respect of opposition. fight fight. That said i see Daniel vettori is cleverest bowler. he know what is his opposition weakness. He owns yuvaraj. Vettori's variations consuses yuvi.Well done vettori. With vettori india can't roll over NZ. It will be even steven in NZ home consitions. Even though india lost , i liked it because indian team knows what was wrong and they will rectify it. In 20/20 every match is different , new game. India has to play different game assuming yuvi gets out single digit every time to vettori. They can't bulldoze. Indians has to out think Vettori.

Posted by: Vijay at February 26, 2009 1:35 PM

Good blog Iain I really enjoyed reading.
Hope Sehwag Gambhir and Yuvraj read ur blog. Watchout for One dayers and Tests Newzeland is going to be crushed. India is using 20-20 for practice. NZ is going to pay for last tour.

Posted by: vissu at February 26, 2009 1:35 PM

I can't believe you are that excited. I think NZ has won vs India even in the last World cup T20 match and that was the only match India has lost in that series. I think NZ is better than India in NZ, although this Indian team has the talent to win the series this time.

As an Indian supporter, I am quite okay with the way Indians have performed yesterday. Had it been our old team, we would never have recovered after losing 7 wickets.

I think the two wickets that you have got were vital in India's loss yesterday.

Posted by: Uday at February 26, 2009 1:36 PM

Good post by you . But dont think indians ll leave you they ll thrash you in next match for plenty of runs . Be well prepared for tomo match . Indians will soap like a lions tomo and tear yours team in to pieces .0best of luck my friend

Great Match. Huge Hits all over the park. I just wonder what would have happened with NZ batting first.
Iian, what score did you think (before the game started) was good enough against this Indian team at Christchurch?

Posted by: Sid at February 26, 2009 1:48 PM

nice writeup Ian bt i think it wont be easy 2 beat indians

Posted by: HP at February 26, 2009 1:52 PM

Great blog. Really enjoy getting a feel for what is going through your mind out there. The Indian arrogance re their team in your comments section is hard to take - Kiwi's show more humility than that. Anyway good luck for the tour. The Indians will be tough but not impossible to beat. Pity we don't seem to be allowed to prepare pitches to suit the NZ team - why should we be forced to serve up flat decks for the indians? What about home town advantage? That said, I wouldn't fancy facing Sharma on a green top!

Posted by: YabLa at February 26, 2009 1:55 PM

I didnt read the Blog but i read some comments by Indians....and i dont understand why you guys start crying???Its just a bLog read it or dont...no one force you to...atleast leave some mature comments. Looks like some poor 15 yrs old kid watching this game in his neighbours house saw indian team losing that nite and is crying now and taking all his anger away on Poor Brien´s BLog....

Posted by: Etrnl at February 26, 2009 1:57 PM

Great blog mate, and you guys were deservedly the winners on the night. And you lead the pack with that opening burst. Keep up the good work. Its a known fact that Dhoni is an avid cricinfo site reader so I'm sure he's onto your blog already. Good luck for tomorrow but I have a gut feeling it will not be as easy this time around with the Indians wary of you.

Good cricket all-over...

Great blog Iain ! I love reading blogs of current cricketers they are so honest and insightful ! I think cricinfo had hit the nail on the head by having you and Sangakarra writing for them! They are great and unlike the many other writers not vindicative.
Great bowling in your victory the other day! You guys truly played smart cricket and outclassed us ! We underestimated you and we lost! Anyways good luck on the field tomorrow , I hope the Indians win though this time!

Hey Ian
Great bowling man
U were really awesome to get both the openers out. But now they know how you would bowl at them and be prepared. So change you're game plan for the next match give them something suprising.
Maintain the pressure over these Indians and they'll fall like 9 pins. Don't think about you guys getting rolled over by this Indian Team. It's your home thay they are playing in. So all the best dude and hope you guys can win all the 3 series
Best of Luck

Hey Iian, great blogg mate..Awesome is not the Word. See Indians soo bias, partisan, just call them what u want.... they wear horse blind, can never appreciate the Others.... I'm hoping that History repeats itself and keep a audio recorder in your pocket specially when Harbajan is on the field. Carry a piece of PORK pie for him to taste, his pallete needs some of that. All the Best and hope you trash the indian once again.... Regards percy - dubai

Iain, Very good and interesting article. Your comments and views are aptly captured and makes it an interesting reading. I will make it a point to read all you blogs through the series. All the best.

Neat work man...! I like the way you explain each over, though i suspect the reason for the enormous comment response is because you wrote praisingly about the Indians...

Posted by: Ram at February 26, 2009 2:12 PM

Enjoyable note and surely, an enjoyable game. You deserved to win, you had a plan (I doubt India had one) and you executed very well. Excellent bowling from you, no doubt. Although I wish India had won, doesn't bother me as much. Not as much as you losing (or drawing) with the cocky dingos. [Yeah, it's a pun on you Jon *ucker)

Congratulations! Ian...it was a gr8 display of cricketing skills from you guys..DAN has again proved to be a 'silent assassin' with his spot on captaincy and brilliant bowling figures...i believe the way yuvraj singh fell to him, gives us a clear idea of things to come..some sleepless nights 4 da rocksta!
And yah..Brendon Mc Cullum...go bark at him and tell him to start hitting the balls out of the park, else we back here in india, are not gonna wake up at 6 in the morning to watch him just clinching singles..go 4 it black caps..its a very long way ahead!

I think Dan is bringing a sense of clamness to the team and the way they go about their business. Kiwis should thank their captain for being the super cool guy.

This series I believe will be that captain vs captain. Dhoni Vs Dan. Two kwel guys.

I wish the indian batters go after the Dan's bowling and lets see how he reacts to that.

BTW Nice blog Ian. I saw you for the first time bowling, nice easy runup and nice follow through. Just like mine :) lol

Good job last night! Congrats!!!

mmmm .... to be honest, I expect the Indian team to roar back, we arent loosers .... & wid Dhoni arnd, its gonna be tough time for NZ. I'm absolutely aware of the NZ team, they are too good an outfit .... not just now, but always .... they really give a fight. Work hard to keep Sehwag & Gambhir quiet .... more than half the battle is won!!! .... Reg India, they are a talented lot .... I hope they'll wrap it up tommorow & the one dayers .... Test series looks to end in a draw .... lets see, I have my fingers crossed .... All the Best Matey & All the Best to the Indians .... Hope to see good cricket next few weeks :-) Kudos!!!

Wow...Excellent blog mate...enjoyed reading it

However, your bowling was even better than you blog...except the last over offcourse...keep it up mate, otherwise you sure will get sleepless nights from the Indians...

I loved reading the comments of the Aussie boke...now he doesn't like the Indians...people will start hating India even more once they'll start winning more matches...but not the same was as people hate the Aussie cricket team...except a few blokes...

BTW - NZ cricket team has always been a thorn in the Indian cricket teams throat...they appear to beat then on every important occaision...for instance T20 World Cup...Challenger Trophy in Sri Lanka...when India reached the finals after beating Australia and South Africa and was about towin the Final as well...but Chris Cairns had a different idea...

I like the Kiwis but don't really like the OZz...possibly coz I am half Indian & Half British....however the irony is that one of my best mate is an OZ....all the best

But i would like to make a suggestion for u and ur NZ mates.Whatever u have written in ur blog and the way Dan & other guys talk in press confernces,it sounds like u guys are too overawed by the Indians. Its not bad to praise the opposition but to talk about them like they're a bunch of very special people conveys a very poor mentality walking into the series...no offence but i do think that u guys have got to correct it if u are fancying any chances of humbling India coz whatever they are ..they're very confident about what they do...!
best wishes for the next one..!!!

Nice write up Iain. Good to hear from players perspective. Although I am an Indian supporter, I've always liked NZ team coz they are level headed unlike Aussies. I am big fan of Chris Cairns and Dan Vettori. Good luck with tomo's game, hope Indian wins ;-)

Well done Iain. As mentioned by others it really is refreshing to read the thoughts of an international without all the usual cliches. Keep it up and maybe there's a compilation book in it some time in the future. All the best for the rest of the series and got to say I loved Vettori's quote about doing the hakka.

Hi Iain,
People who have missed the match may not understand the contributions you have made, b'coz the final stats look different. First three overs of you and couple of overs from Butler, Vettori were the difference between two sides.

Hello Mr.Brein. It was brilliant what your guys showed on the 25th of February. I like the way you guys do it. Ya, especially Mr.Dan, he is my favorite man. Anything can happen in the course of cricket. No matter who wins, the best part of cricket is that guys do their best. And talking about the misters of New Zealand, it was absolutely true. Hope so, everyone do their best. All the best mate!...... :)

Great Writeup Ian ! A perfect protrayal of what goes on a fairly new bowler while bowling to the best batsmen in the world. I am writing this from Chicago and was happy about the NZ win as you guys played better cricket than India. Being an Indian supporter, I have always seen Dhoni's team jump back right into the contest after loosing an opener. I admired your bowling from the last game. Just be cautious with the Indian batsmen as you have shared a piece of your mind through this blog and now they have a fair idea on whats going on in your mind. Yuvi will definitely play Vettori better this game and Gauti is a fighter too. You drew first blood at him and he will compensate !!! :) Looking forward to this series as I am now banging my head listening to Cynic !!!

Hi Shyamkumar
I wish Indian cricket team keeps missing the tricks everytime they come out to bat.
Everyone in the world knows that this Indian team is good but the problem is that the indians don't try to analyse their team's faults rather put the fingers on others.
Let's see who prevails in the next match.

Posted by: Anonymous at February 26, 2009 3:33 PM

brilliant work by kiwis... great..the way McCullum batting was superb.. he again showed his power and lead NZ..hope kiwis will do best as they did in opener T20... best of luckk

Posted by: Abhishek at February 26, 2009 3:36 PM

Nice effort from NZ. It was reckless batting by India in the start but with the depth they have they still could manage to get a pretty avg score of 160, wonder if any of the other top batsman had stayed longer wht would the score have been. But I would attribute more of the victory to the NZ batsman as they played exceedingly well and never allowed the Indians to even dream of a win. Another exciting game is coming up. Good luck to both teams hope we have some exciting cricket to see.

Posted by: RK at February 26, 2009 3:40 PM

Well played and written Iain, you guys were the deserved winners and Indian fans shouldn't grudge your victory. Whether India hits back or not in the next game, it's anyone's guess. I don't think there's a great deal of difference between the two sides as far as T20 games are concerned. Vettori is a smart bowler and captain and NZ have some good hitters as well right through to no. 10. It all boils down to execution on the day and India did get carried away last night. As an Indian fan, I hope they learn something from B. MacCullum's approach - sharp singles with occasional big hits. It'll be interesting to see India's approach in the next game and All the best to you.
Aussies need not take any comfort from this NZ victory, their cockiness and arrogance managed to upset even generally calm Vettori. They better worry about their fate at the hands of SA.

Posted by: Die Hard Indian Fan at February 26, 2009 3:43 PM

Iain, I have to admit it was a great effort from the entire Kiwi team, however if you can produce the same performance tomorrow, hats off. Dhoni and the boys in blue will be back to make 1-1 in the series, dont know why there are just the 2 20/20 games.

Posted by: Da_truth at February 26, 2009 3:47 PM

Great Game! The Indians were overconfident and serves them right! Great show, black caps.
Some of them have contacts with the bookies, so beware when the bookies expect them to lose - they will win. hehehe :)

Also once Sachin is back for the one days, he still play well to get more records, so watch out for him - easily their most technically correct and best batsmen. Wonder what your plan is for the little master?

It was great to see you bowl , and though I am a diehard indian fan , great cricket is always fantastic. Please dont mind the crazy comments by some of my fellow indians here. I hope our team can come back a bit and its a nice contest in the end whoever wins or loses. It was great to see you bowling your heart out , most of the balls you bowled were in the 142 - 147 Ks range.Best of luck and best wishes to both teams for the rest of the tour.

let me begin wishing you good luck for tomorrow lain. It was pleasure to read the first hand account of all that was happening on the field. Your blog always gives a very fresh outlook on what we see on the tv, otherwise. Excellent bowling lain, you were quite upto the task, but i wish we get to see the Sehwags and Gambhirs occupy the crease longer tomorrow. I am sure you must have enjoyed some of that scintillating stroke-play too. ;)

Hey Ian 1st of all let me congratulate you for a great opening spell that you bowled in the 1st 20/20 and I wish you good luck for the rest of the series,Indians might have lost the 1st match but let me remind you that they are slow starters on tours and later with more exposures they raise thier level,so what you just experinced was just a trailor from Shewag and you guys were lucky that Yuvi got out ealry otherwise just imagine with the size of the ground where even the edeges were sailing well over the boundary fence a players like him would have hit atleast 2 overs for 36 runs each but none the less your team played well with brains and planning unlike the Indian team I hope Indians play with confidence than over confidence in tomorrow's 20/20.
All the best INDIAN Team ...

Great bowling Iain. I am a an Indian supporter but would like to see NZ making India work for it! India has a power packed line up, but one must remember that they always give chances! the key is to grab those chances and put the Indians under pressure. Good luck for the next one! Although i would love to see India bounce back, which they should because of their good form.

u were brilliant..as your team. I'm in total awe with the fielding... seems like the Indians do have a tough tour on their hands.....a challenge....which I'm sure Dhoni and co will take up :) all the best to the kiwis too, nothing beats a stiff competition... it makes for good cricket. All the best for the rest of the series.

Have always been a fan of NZ cricket (OfCourz not when India is playing) ... good quality of cricket on display...but then I believe this was the right time for the Indians to get a wake call compared to probably an ODI or test. Watch out for the Indians to strike back.... Can already see a 1-1 outcome by tomorrow...Cheers

Posted by: truthseeker at February 26, 2009 4:35 PM

Ian, your second Blog is better than your first, where you sided with Mark Richardson's tripe - Sehwag is some, everyone has to hold in awe and fear - he has torn to shreds bowlers like Shane Bond, Lee, Akhtar - Bond had the last laugh a few times, as Bond is a champ as well

You forgot to mention Mark Guptill, as given a conscious reprieve by your umpire - he was plumb LBW - t was not an oversight - It was a decision that helped New Zealand's momentum - sorry mate, such decisions influence the outcome of the match

why do not you write the need for neutral umpires

Iain,
Love your blog and hope you keep writing and sharing your thoughts with us. As an Indian, some of the comments left on the blog are incredibly embarassing and i'd like to apologize in advance for the fact that there will inevitably be a lot lot more of them.

Three tests and five odi's will be enough for every moron in India to come over onto these pages, make a jackass of himself and embarass the rest of us. My apologies, we arent all such idiots and ppl like khakhijordar and Harbhajan Singh are not a representative sample!

Anyway, love your blog and look forward to reading it. Please don't let the odd idiot take the joy out of blogging for you.

"From the notes we had gathered on these batters I had made some shorter notes that I had on a piece of paper in my pocket. I referred to these quite a few times while we were out there, in time I'll have them in memory, until then, I don't mind having to refer to my notes so that I am not getting the plan wrong." Notes in your pocket! You gotta be kidding me!

I supposed to be there in NZ for this series(tried to escape from Canadian wicked winter), but recession din't allow me to see you "RockStars" with my naked eyes .. may be next time .. a piece of advice to you ... now India will definitely bounce back hardly .. so don't just rely on your notes .. try to capture the moment by controlling your confidence(hope to see a gr8 match tonite) .. Best of luck ... It was great cricket and NZ team showed cricket is played on grounds and the best is the one on top and not the one who is projected as best. You will easily beat India in second T20 as they look one of weakest times at thsi moment. They are more concerned with glamor than actual play.

Congrats Iain...Keep the spirit going guyz, don't be over-confident and crush the Indians...All the best for the remainder of the tour mate....Batting is their main strength so concentrate on taking quick early wickets...Their bowling is also good but can look weak if guys go after the bowling and smash a few big ones...You guys are a better fielding side...

Good Article Lain. Yes as a follower of Indian Cricket from my childhood days, I am bit dissapointed with the way India lost the match. But even from the loss, I am very happy to see my team got every potential to be the best. They fought till the end. I know it is ridiculous to quote "If Sehwag stayed for one more over, we would have won". But as a hardcore Indian fan I always say it. Jai Ho...

Posted by: Manas at February 26, 2009 5:06 PM

Dude, if you bowl as well as you write, India are in for a tough tour. Cheers. (but seriously, notes!)

Posted by: ruben at February 26, 2009 5:14 PM

Though India are world champions in T20, it was asking for much to play directly with out even a single practice match. I think it is a harsh decision of BCCI on Indian players when the expectations are huge. I strongly feel BCCI should look at the benefits of the team moral/Indian fans expectations/fairness on the players before they make such commercial decisions to play more matches sacrificing practice matches. I am of the opinion that India lost the match because it didn't have a practice match (especially in tour like NZ known for its bouncy tracks). Its high time BCCI realize teams benefits rather than its commercial interests. I could very well say that the team would be under a lot of pressure and the confidence low before going to the next match which could have been a nice start to the series winning the first match itself have they had a practice match.

Posted by: Genius at February 26, 2009 5:20 PM

Hello Iain.. I am not too sure if you would be reading this, but still, your way of writing might not be too politically correct, but it is the best for the readers.
Keep up the good work, both - here and in the cricket field.

Also, I pity the supporters of both the teams, who, inspite of praising the better performers,, go into the useless arguments over crushing the other team. I would just want to let you people know that cricket is not a series game.. it is a day-by-day. session-by-session game... so, the team which performs better on a particular day, wins.

Once again... congrates Iain.. I have become a great fan of yours by virtue of this blog of yours...

And, I just wish best of luck to both the teams for rest of the matches, since that is what will provide us with the utmost entertainment...

Hi Ian, very good blog, enjoyed reading it, but you must also appriciate the way the confident start was made my Indian Team, and they did not have a practice match either...after a long journey from India to NewZealand they smashed too many sixes.....this should be warning to NZ side, I think India will come back very strong....any wayz best of luck for both the teams

Posted by: Efti at February 26, 2009 5:25 PM

Looking at the match, as a unbiased fan, I think NZ won against a very strong team. Indian batting power is very deep. Consider yourself lucky to get away. Just like any strong team, India have more than enough talent in this team to come from behind and win any game at any stage. I was supporting NZ and it was good that they won but I do not think, its going to be too many times, I would be celebrating. So, I wish you good luck and RUN for your life.

Iain ,I think you are one honest cricketer that cricket world needs. I am in USA and I was watching game. Nice bowling. Gambhir is not a guy plays such a cross batted shots many times. May be small boundries made Indians think to get more sixes like a cup cake. Though I am Indian fan and to remind you Zaheer and Harbhajan bowled a way better than you and Dan but You deserve a BIG KUDOS for this blog. Man ! Where is the old Cricket , where people used get up and clap on the opponent heating some nice shot. And to Indian Batters: Guys there is something called ground shot that you forgot to play . Indians were traditionally were very wristy batsmen. Anyways hoping to see better Indian battig. Especially from Gautam and Dhoni and may be Yuvraj. I have seen Yuvraj playing live in SA last T20i World cup and against England and OMG he was one massive terror . You were superb. You did amazing bowling in first spell and so does Dan. But I still felt India short of one specialist bowler.

Neat bowling Man.
Dan & you were truly exceptional that night.
It must be a great feeling to beat the World Champions...Totally deserving win.
NZ was the only team India couldn't conquer at T20 championships & they still are unbeatable BUT be sure India will hit back hard.
I agree with Dan, SEHWAG is the one name you must concentrate on since he can single handedly change the complexion of the match irrespective of the current situation.
If NZ wants to do well in all the 3 series, Sehwag is the man you must get very early Otherwise NZ stand NO CHANCE!

Irresponsible batting performance from Indians. It is not who wins or loses. How does a team approach and maintain their composure? India failed miserably in that respect. Congratulations to NZ.

It is Just A lesson learned by India. But Being an indian I would say that is how we deal with it. YOu have seen one side of the coin, but keep in mind there are two sides of coin, and the opposit side is yet to be seen..

Good Luck

Welcome to India & Indians Ian..I am sure you would be enjoying all the attention you are getting on the field & off the field on your blog..You sure deserve it for the class bowler you are and for being such a good writer..I like your writing for being honest towards your bowling and appreciative when a batsman plays a good shot..I was a constant reader of your blog but this is the first time I saw you in action..Too bad that you were too good for our openers but then that's how the game is, no complaints..I am in a Catch 22 situation now..I want you to bowl very good but then I want India to win as well..I will leave it on the field for you guys to sort it out..Here's me wishing you all the very best for a good season ahead and all the very best to our Indian team as well so that they win matches and win hearts :-)

PS: I will always be waiting to read your blogs so keep writing.

Bowling Coach Mr Venkatesh Prasad had emphasized on the importance of the slower delivery and people during his bowling days were critizising him that he was not bowling fast, ha ha the funny part is that slower delivery was the odd one and not the regular ball foe a pace bowler, his medium pace delivery was the odd one and every other ball as slow slower slowest ha ha ha, wonder what wisdom he is tranfering to the indian team

I hope you still have it in you to appear here when you get walloped around, don't back out then, if you do, I am going to make sure my feelings are known in one blog or the other.

And cricinfo, for the love of God, stop this blog show, for every Tom and Harry. Let them play cricket.

Posted by: SATISH at February 26, 2009 7:27 PM

Neat bowling Man.
Dan & you were truly exceptional that night.
It must be a great feeling to beat the World Champions...Totally deserving win.
NZ was the only team India couldn't conquer at T20 championships & they still are unbeatable BUT be sure India will hit back hard.
I agree with Dan, SEHWAG is the one name you must concentrate on since he can single handedly change the complexion of the match irrespective of the current situation.
If NZ wants to do well in all the 3 series, Sehwag is the man you must get very early Otherwise NZ stand NO CHANCE!

Posted by: irshad at February 26, 2009 7:30 PM

Hi
Great blog man U had explained very nicely. I always like bowling.U might be happy with the way u bowled Sehwag. But as a Indian i know about sehwag that once he decides to hit he will show miracles on the ground.
This was happened to Mcgrath,Bretlee,pollock,Akthar,anderson,vaas,..etc every bowler fears about the presence of sehwag. So becareful and try improve as better as Shane bond my favourite bowler. And dont give open statements aginst sehwag he wont reply by word rather by bat.
all the best keep bowl excellent.

First i would like to congrats u guys for yesterday's match.... But dont show ur angers against yuvraj... Bec he has the talent to hit everyballs to sixxxxx........

The delivery that go Sehwag was bang on! Kudos for the great win! I am sure there are more challenges to come and many more battles to be fought. Good luck.

India are going to lose in NZ which doesn't matter... but come world cup they are going to storm everyone by suprise... did they not the last time they visited here... lost and stormed the world cup??

Posted by: Abhishek at February 26, 2009 7:39 PM

hello Ian. I am Indian and as expected will pray for India to win. But your team played as true champions in the last t20. India put up a dismal performance and I guess they were a tad overconfident as well. The way your teams batsmen batted under lights was highly commendable. You are a great cricketer and a hardworking and humble person. Do give your best in this series as I will only wish that India gets to play against tough opponents like the Black Caps. Best of luck to you and your team. But a slightly more best of luck and my prayers for India to win. ;)

Its a great challenge for india playing in NZ.Best team does,nt mean best in their home conditions, best is to beat opposition team on their home grounds.Indians must change their attitude of play according to the situations. It was intresting to read your comments Ian.keep it up.May the best side win.

I think its great how there are so many Indians reading your blog and telling you that your lucky that you won and that they dont want you to win!!

Well I thoroughly enjoyed your victory and Im sure it wont be the last, its great to see you come from being a fuller in the black caps squad to being one of the first names put down for the starting 11.

Enjoy reading your blog Ian, my mates and I joke about how express your excitment in your blogs, but thats what makes it such a great read!!

before i say something i must admit that you did have a fascinating opening spell lain. But hey, being indian, even though i was disappointed with india's defeat..i kept looking at the highlight again and again especially indian batting. Most of the batsman got out because of their own mistake. so, it wasnt really bowlers who took most of the wicket but they were batsmen themselves who took der wicket. I am not underestimating you guys ability to bowl but all i am trying to say here is that they were playing like those teenage kids playing cricket on street. They were being irresponsible with their innings but think about it lain..what if they wont repeat the same mistake in second twenty20 match.

I have played many tournaments from my school and this is just a mind game what you are reading on cricinfo. For example..Dhoni admitted that they made a mistake of trying to explode from the first ball and they wont repeat the same mistake again. But they will be batting explosively again!

Posted by: Thivja at February 26, 2009 8:47 PM

Brien , nice work in the 1st T20 ,you bowled really well man..
But wait for the INDIAN RESPONSE in the 2nd match. They were tempted by the short boundaries and lost the plot straight away.. but the batting was simply superb...
you will see what this indian team is in the 2nd T20.. The thing which you never expected off. Thats what this team is capable off and you will see that LIVE for the first time in front of you..
But i am not taking the credit from your side for the first match. But i am sure you cant win over this massive indian line up for sure.
I bet this summer is gonna be hard work for you guys..
BUt you will love seeing the lovely INDIAN LINE UP going after you...
waiting for your excited response in the 2nd T20.. I bet 100 percent it is gonna be a calculated and pre planned INDIAN WIN...
Which u never cant avoid.

Congratulations on the win, New Zealand looks to be developing a very competitive talented team. I will be watching the tour with interest - there is no doubt India have the most powerful batting lineup in the world and a solid bowling attack, While NZ are building a solid team again. Keep up the excellent work on the pitch and in your blog Ian, its great to see characters in the game such as yourself, your a credit to your team!

Posted by: amdtelrunya at February 26, 2009 9:00 PM

Mr khakijoardar - this is a blog so I assume you have a full keyboard and don't have to use text/SMS language.

It also never ceases to amaze me that the Indian team gets talked up despite having done nearly nothing playing away from home in the last ten years. Even the series they had in Australia they still lost, despite all the controversy that went on. They are probably on par with Australia as number 2 in tests right now. Even more preposterous was what I saw in another article playing down Bradman as not being the best batsman. I think his numebrs clearly speak for themselves.

Posted by: Hashaam at February 26, 2009 9:05 PM

hope you can get the openers out again so cheaply, that will be the KEY!

Have to say the vitriol from some of the Indian fans is a little disturbing, if the Indian team are as good as you are all claiming then why shouldn't Iain celebrate a victory over them? keep up the good work guys and if it comes down to 6 hitting the NZ team are no mugs either, all that aside NZ winning first up has generated even more intrest in this series, I hope we can continue to grow and give the rock stars of cricket a reality check.

Mate,I am one fanatic indian cricket fan living in Melbourne. That little piece you wrote is a beautiful glimpse of what goes through a bowler's mind on the cricket field. In a game of such intensity carriying your country on your shoulders through the 6 deliveries of each over is a responsibility that is daunting in every way. Yet you carried out your plans so well on wednesday. Wishing you all the best for the series and though I do pray that India wins today I wish you a great game of cricket and I hope you have that child like excitement and the fire in your belly each day of your life you spend on the field. There is a beautiful taste of honesty in your writing. hope you keep posting.
Cheers and good luck !!!

All the best for the Series. Nice to see some one really fighting back and winning against my India.
How ever wait and watch we India will never go down in any Series in NZ this time. NZ just has one whole day to cherish this Win. Enjoy it after this the whole series would just belong to India. I might sound too optimistic but at the end of tour this would stay the reality.... reality bites

Don't let some of the comments from my fellow indians discourage you. They are not invincible (no team is) and this will be a close contest. I like the fresh thinking under your new coach, and it shows on the field.

Posted by: Taimoor Sultan at February 26, 2009 10:07 PM

Ian, great blog man, I did not watch the match but saw the highlights later. I have been reading your blogs and enjoy every bit of them.

I will wish you luck but tell you what it will take a lot of work to crack holes in this Indian batting. I still hope India wins :)

Posted by: Navdeep at February 26, 2009 10:18 PM

Ian, you have got good expression to explain the things on the field, however, you are pitted against the best team in the world.

Hope you wil continue youe effort in terms of bowling also to keep Indian Lions under check, which is not an easy task. Next game is going to be a lot tougher.

And yes keep bloging, good effort for a possible future employment to work as a commentator.

Posted by: Sanath Jayasurya at February 26, 2009 10:20 PM

nice blog lian! and congrats on your win. But I know those indian players very well. They are explosive man!! Just to give you a rule of thumb. If Sehwag plays 18 balls in a T20 match, you are looking at a 200+ Total. The only way I see you guys can win tomorrow is to repeat "exactly" what you did y'day, for which chances are extremely rare. Even if anyone of Sehwag/Yuvi/Yusuf play any more balls than they did y'day, that spells trouble for you!

Posted by: Regan at February 26, 2009 10:22 PM

Well done mate, I love reading your blog. I dont normally post comments, but some one from NZ has to! :-) seems to be a lot of Indian support here. Go the Black Caps, you guys have a few tricks that India dont know about yet. Kia Kaha bro!

Posted by: Jiten at February 26, 2009 10:57 PM

Brien, good blog! I am an Indian supporter but realize that they got a bit greedy in small grounds and so could not focus on coming up with some tactic (as Dhoni said, the plan was to NOT go with any plan and take every ball to its merit).

I think if India had won the first 20/20, 2nd one wouldnt feel so special......because we know India can learn quick and comeback and we also know NewZealand wants to push for win this time (w.r.t what happened in australia), and that may backfire. Having said that, we all know what will matter is how both team execute their plans tonight. I think today is more interesting because of what happend day before!!

For the ending notes........your writing is detailed enough to enhance my imagination of being with you while you wrote. Thanks for giving a good insight about u and the team!

May the best team win!! ( and I definetely want India to be the best tonite :-))

Congratulations for brilliant performance.
Beating india in a T20I needs some effort.

Ian! pls beat india again!I just want to see the reaction of the first guy who posted on your blog. Seems he's 'basking' in his pride a little too much and needs to learn that life is indeed a box of chocolates. Hopefully India will be 'marauded' (in good spirit!) tommorrow. Peace:p

Posted by: Chirayu Shishodiya at February 26, 2009 11:47 PM

Good to see how international level players think in a match... No different to what a child thinks during exam time... I am nervous just like u were... make sticky notes just like you do.

I think New Zealand would win more matches during the tour as India has little experience of playing NZ... Conditions very different... Thats the biggest reason of India losing first match..

Anyway beware, India CAN BOUNCE BACK!!! MAY SOUND LIKE A HAUNTING TO YOU!!! LOL

Posted by: Karthick at February 26, 2009 11:50 PM

Just when we were relishing the sweep at Oscars, this defeat came as a surprise..But can't argue the fact that your team did very well restricting the Indians. Good Job!!! Looking forward to an exciting series.

Some of you Indian Fans really need to put a lid on it. Honestly, India wins a few matches and you guys act as like arrogant brats. FFS.. is it not ironic that you are the first people to call out the Aussies and brand them arrogant and over confident blah blah.

Cricket is a game, one team win and one team loses.. why can't you just accept defeat graciously and pat the other team on the back for a job well done. You really embarrass me and all other sane Indians out there... I only hope that people do not regard you lot as representative of the entire Indian population.

Don't get me wrong, I love Team India as much as any of you, but have the decency to allow the other team to celebrate their victory and be proud of it.. or does that right solely belong to Indian people only?

Anyway well done to the Kiwis and I hope India can win the next match.

Cheers

Ian, well played and well written. Nz played well and credit to you and your team. Your picturesque description of the whole match was vivid after reading your blog. keep up the good work or writing such artciles, but not the play since i'm an indian fan. One thing I would like to comment here is, I always find nz wanting against the Australian team, even if the latter was a depleted side. Why is it that you'll buckle with weak knees in front of the Aussies. Dont you'll think its high time, you put up a fight against the Aussies, because thats when you will play better?

Good writing lain!!! All The Best!!! You guys managed to win first game. When Dhoni threw the ball to Yuvi I told my wife that my intuition is saying match is over and exactly as I thought NZ scored 17 of it. Till that point in time match was evenly poised but slipped into the hands of NZ. I could not understand why dhoni preferred Yuvi over Shewag. Shewag is the most underestimated spinner in the world. His extraordinary batting skill is the root cause for him being overlooked as a bowler. What result NZ got yesterday is just beginner's luck. This is what my intuition is saying and it says that India will thrash NZ to the ground. By beating them in the first game you guys have waken up the lions sleeping in their den :-) I am really worried about NZ part time bowlers. Their career is at stake. Indian chilly curry is getting prepared to be served in NZ's platter. Be ready to taste it!!!! Note my email address and contact me after this series.

Nice work Iain, enjoyed watching your attacking style of bowling. I must say thought just wait and see because tonight will be the night where we will send you home in your undies!! Courtesy of the master Sehwag and his accomplice Yuvraj

Posted by: Amish at February 27, 2009 12:51 AM

Ian, first of all thanks for such a great blog. I enjoyed your blogs even during the Chappel-Hadley trophy. It is really nice to know what the players actually go through during the games. As far as this match was concerned I got to see your 2nd over to sehwag and it was a great comeback after he had smashed you a six earlier in the over. I felt sehwag got himself out but you did the right thing by bowling on the stumps. You miss I hit kinda thing. After reading several other articles I feel the reason for India being outplayed so easily was because of lack of match practice. The itinerary is really appalling with no practice games whatsoever!

Anyway to conclude I would like remind you and everyone else Dhoni is huge fan of cricinfo and I am sure he will go through these blogs while planning for future games so you better be careful of what secrets you reveal here!!!
Being a die-hard Indian fan I hope they bounce back to win 2day's game.
All the best for today's game to both teams

a well deserved victory for NZ. They were the better team on the day no one can take that away from them. A positive start but now is when the real contest will start. I want India to loose the second 20/20 too (and yes i am an indian too), I just want to see how the indian team will react after two losses. They might come out stronger or they might perish. We need to see.

Tim Jones: you must feel like a genious to crack o week. give me a break kid i think everyone knows what that is. I dont think anyone will get the wrong idea. Dont worry about overseas ppl worry about your own team because you about to be dominated.

Hey cocky we'd rather that you dont love my country or it,s players because we already have a billion people doing it. my country is not able to cope with all the love it is getting.I guess you are one of those losers, aussies. Obviously your team is not fit enough to be loved anymore so you are barrach=king for the kiwils now. remember the under arm incident, hey cocky.

I really thought your bowling was great, even though I'm an indian fan. You should really try bowling off stump to like Raina. It may sound a little wierd but you could have tried that. I don't know if your reading the comments, but try doing that for just one ball and type back to tell if it worked. TRy the inswinger on some on the batsmen maybe on Yuvraj. Great Mate, i felt i was with you while i was reading your blog. Please continue to write blogs like this one, even when NZ loses.

I 'm pretty sure that DHONI and his boys will rock back and come hard at you guys today. Offcourse they will as they are the world champs!!!

If you let Indian openers to stay longer, NZ have to forget about winning altogether this friday.

Any way, good blog mate. Winning or losing, i say enjoy the cricket you are playing. Hat off to you for taking those 2 important wickets of NZ on Wednesday.

Please do write more blog throughout the NZ series.

God Bless and enjoy your cricket

Nice blog mate. Good to get the player's Point Of View. Just try to stick to the basics

Hi good blog nice to read. What is wrong if Indian fans support Indian stars and expect them to win all the time. After all that is what every fan wants all over the world in all the sports. Fans are the ones who makes a sport ticking not the so called experts. Who mostly live on the sport.

Posted by: andy at February 27, 2009 3:49 AM

well bowled and good luck for the rest of the tour Ian.

We all know that 20/20 isn't real cricket and is a bit of a circus so if Inida want to claim to be champions of this then no skin off my nose. Great to beat them at their own game.

With 1 billion + people it is no wonder that they turn out such class players. Even better that a country of 4 million can stick it up them. They are weak minded and can't handle the pressure so keep piling it on and their over-inflated egos will cause their own downfall

Posted by: ANAND at February 27, 2009 4:01 AM

nice blog Iain! And yeah, great spell the other day! Hope to see more of you and wish NZ cricket grows from strength to strength. Please do keep writing and all the best for the upcoming matches.

Posted by: Madhu Batta at February 27, 2009 4:02 AM

Good Bowling Iian. I think picking up sehwag and gambhir in your first spell is one of the turning points in that match. I saw your bowling in AUS Vs NZ ODI series but i dint find that much interesting after seeing kyle mills bowling such an excellent bowling. But after seeing this match I thought you bowled really well compared to that series. I think the ball din't bounce enough in last match. I have noticed this by looking at gambhir, yuvraj and dhoni's wickets. what do you say about that??

Posted by: Jeff at February 27, 2009 4:03 AM

Nice blog mate and great bowling! All the best for the series.

Truth be known wouldnt call myself a fan of yours but who knows, get more killer wickets and I may be singing your praise! Laters.

Posted by: Derrick Paull at February 27, 2009 4:04 AM

Remember, with every stride in, every ball you bowl and every bouncer you duck, we (NZ) are 100% behind you and the BLACK CAPS. Go get 'em tonight!!!

KIWI ! ! ! KIWI ! ! ! KIWI ! ! !

Great blog Ian. I think many of my fellow Indians are being a bit ungracious and getting a bit ahead of themselves with comments like "This will be your last win on this tour". Come on guys, NZ played great cricket on Wednessday, and they will continue to do so. I have a feeling that this tour will be much more evenly matched than most people here in India feel.

NZ is my second favourite team after India. You have got to admire they way they play their hearts out every single time and that with minimum fuss. They always seem much greater than the sum of their parts.

Good luck with the rest of the series Ian.

Posted by: pavan at February 27, 2009 4:13 AM

Ian
After india, iam fan of NZ and SA..the one thing i noticed in NZ team is lack of consistancy, most of the times you people play well in 2 games, but after that u couldn't maintain consistancy, for example we can take the recent AUS tour..after watching first 2 matches, i thought u r back on track of winning games, but u lost the next 2 in a row..so try to maintain consistancy and don't get carried away....for today's game i won't make a wish of who to win...which team plays good cricket today will win...

keep posting in the blog...

Posted by: Alpesh at February 27, 2009 4:15 AM

Great Blog Ian....that's nice of u describing Indian batsman as destructors...well yes they are no doubt...well there would have been more of pyrotechnics had our two best hard hitters Yuvraj and Dhoni would have played...no regrets it was their fate that they got out...but it wont b the same again...SO get ready for the fireworks in the next Twenty20....All the Best..

What a great match. I have to say that I am glad to see New Zealand has some good depth in their side now and that we have finally got some new people who have really seized their opportunity and played with confidence. I mean Guptill Elliot Broom. I have to say its hard having to chose who should be in the team right now with some quality playedrs having to be sidelined as we have too much talent. I have to say though Jake Oram did justify his immediate selection with a great return the game. You really turned the match with those opening two wickets. Was good to see. India have some exciting players. Baz has been playing a different game lately. I think he's going through a learning process that wills see him come out a better batsman. The thing is its almost as though we have anough firepower at the top of the innings what with Ryder, Guptill Taylor and Oram, that Brendon has been adjusting his game to play an anchor role. I like our batting lineup at the mo.

Posted by: Selva at February 27, 2009 4:31 AM

That was one of the best cricket blog i've seen in recent times. Keep going Iain. But i have to say that you will learn a lot from this tour!!

hi, o'brein
Nice Aritcle, we are happy to read the emotions, that the player undergo during the matches. I am big Indian FAN. I love to see great match rather than one sided matches as India did against Australia. I want some team which can give great fight against the current world number one team. your team matches that expectations. I love New Zealand team as there are no world class players, but at the same time you all really good as a team, HAIL NEW ZEALAND team

I wonder if Thompson will be given a chance. But again its a matter of who would you leave out. Southee needs to hone his game but I like him as a charachter in the side. Poor old Jeetan has been left on the sidelines but its good to see a spinner who has got a bit of all round ability been given a shot and what with two McCullums in the side that could spell danger. Poor old Elliot must be feeling a bit hard done by as he has put in some good performances lately, but I can understand why Broom is there for the T20s as he is capable of scoring at a good pace and is an exciting player and fielder too. Although Elliot does have the advantage of being able to bowl a few. Like I say I dont envy the person who has to pick the team, its a hard choice to make on the day. I do have to say that some of the selection over in Australia were a bit odd with old Trent Boult and Craig Cumming. We should have brought more backup.

Posted by: shajan at February 27, 2009 4:53 AM

O'Brien ,I think you are one honest cricketer that cricket world needs. I am in Port Blair, India and I was watching game. Nice bowling. Gambhir is not a guy plays such a cross batted shots many times. You have tasted sehwags few shots that day. Just watch out if sehwag and gambir stands for 5 overs what is going to happen to ur good bowling and bla bla bla. I will be asking u some question after todays match. Best of luck from me. I wish today indian tigers will cook Kiwis. Every day is not sunday. Watch out.

Posted by: Sidharth at February 27, 2009 4:57 AM

Hi all... i was surprise that last 20/20 we loss with kiwis... we played well in the end and not a bad score that 160+.. we have to contained well in the bowlin and our part time bowlers like yusuf pathan and yuvraj singh disappointing... even irfan pathan... bowlers like zaheer, ishant n harbajan done well in last match keep rockz guyz... i feel dat rohit sharma and irfan pathn have to be out on next game... have to give chance to dinesh kartik he is in good form now n such a wonderful fielder in 20/20... then my next choice was bowling dept praveen kumar... he is great all rounder like irfan pathan... come on guys u people have to rocks with kiwis... dnt fail middle order batsman again... need to be careful for rank 1 is must for us... come on dhoniiii... all the best guyz... chake de india!!!! Good luck!!!!

Posted by: vivek at February 27, 2009 5:04 AM

I think indians have just played like a 10 over match in the first 20-20, but it would change in the next game to 20 overs match. You expect a cracker of a competition

Posted by: CoolGuy at February 27, 2009 5:07 AM

That was a good Post. Running through almost the whole match !!! Hope the second match will also be a good one as the first !!!

Thanks for a great blog Iain! Your write in a very entertaining way! And well done with your bowling and the win! I was there at the match live-my first ever live match and it was very exciting, all thanks to you guys.
Good luck for tonight's match. Hope you guys win again!

This is a lovely article giving insights into a bowler's mind as he goes through the motions! More such articles are definitely welcome.

First off, it was incredible that India actually recovered from 7 wkts down and make it to a decent and defendable score of 162. I felt that taking out Yusuf Pathan after he bowled an excellent first over was the turning point of the match. With spin from both ends, NZ was tied down... but Dhoni made the mistake of giving the ball to Ishant. I'd have waited until after the 12th over to throw the ball to him... especially after Yusuf only conceded 3-4 runs of this first over. Also, instead of Yuvraj, Sehwag should have been given a chance... he bowls flat and wicket to wicket. Kudos to NZ for playing to a plan and winning comfortably!!!

Awesome bowling from Ian/Dan & despite a lucky break off the first ball PLUMB LBW for Guptill - well played to the top order of NZ.

The differentiating aspect between the two sides is running between the wkts.

have to agree that nz nailed it in the previous T20 but you'll can never count us out. we are the reigning T20 champiions and you'll will see us beat u again today.

But on the bright side, your blog is super good, i love it more than the whole NZ team, when u retire write some books on cricket and do some marketing in india, its destined to sell well here.

Iain my man,

Although am a Indian cricket freak, I must admit that Indians lost their way in greediness for more runs last match. You were great in your bowling spell for the first three, Dan and that young man Butler were brilliant. I loved the innings Brendon and Ross played. You were all great. But the ominous sign for India is jacob is back into big business...He seems to be in great touch man....Thanks for the blog post, it was great!!!

Posted by: Satheesh at February 27, 2009 5:30 AM

Although people are behind our Indian super batting line up, the Kiwi's are not weak either. They have Danny coming in at 7 or 8, Ross, Brendon and Jacob are great players especially in Limited overs. I strongly believe Praveen kumar should replace Rohit in the Indian mix for T20's. Rohit should get more out of ODI's and look for a test spot, then he should prove at a T20 level.

Posted by: Ajax at February 27, 2009 5:34 AM

Hi, Iain I have watched almost each and every match you played against the Aussies and Knew that India should not take the Kiwis lightly.
I like the current young Kiwi team, I was wondering what would happen to the Kiwis, without guys like ,Chris Cairns, Craig McMillan, Shane Bond, Nathan Astle, but you guys are doing an excellent job, Hats Off to you.

Posted by: Sri Mallur at February 27, 2009 5:40 AM

Well written....Keep writing especially for us folks who dont seem to find time to watch the game but reading your blog feels like we were there.....good luck mate on the next one, although viva la Indie'

Hi Iain.. thanks a lott man for the blog, keep on writing such stuff, feels good.. All the best for the game, may the BEST team win :)

Posted by: ajay at February 27, 2009 5:42 AM

fantastic job lain , u all really performad well ,much more than i expected . u have a very balanced side with most of the allrounders that is the reason i think u outplayed the indians . i think the secound match will be tough for u to take it off because the indians are frustrated and will definately bounce back hardly . so, all the best for ur 2nd mat.........

Posted by: N.Ganesan at February 27, 2009 5:43 AM

I think T20 is like Blitz Chess and anyone can win or be beaten and there is nothing like a permanent world champion like ODI or Test. India can't rest on their laurels nor take it arrogant because you have Sehwag , Gambhir, Yuvraj. Anything could happen in T20 which is what we all witnessed in IPL. Shane Warne used his limited resources to win it square which none would have thought in the beginning. Same won't work this time that also it is easy to predict, but we can't say who ultimately will win. It is an exciting entertainment people enjoy. Anyone can turn the game around or win it on a given day.

Posted by: Prasanth Nottath at February 27, 2009 5:46 AM

Dear O'Brilliant!

I am absolutely a star struck fan of yours, and despite being an Indian, found myself jumping all over the place when you nailed Gambhir in your first over.

However I am torn between my national bias and my undying love of you as far as tests are concerned. And my nationality might just get over the line there. But in T20s, and ODIs, I will be bearing your flag.

Great job, Iain. Liked the way you literally took us through your overs in particular. Better than the babbling of live commentary of the 'experts'. Looking forward to more from you.

4 overs 30 for 2 is great.... again 2 (too) big wickets... great going...

So if beating the world champs was amazing, what is beating them 2-0 in the series?? May I suggest Fantastic! Stupendous! Pinch me I don't really believe it happend! and how bout throughly deserved.. :)

Posted by: AJB at February 27, 2009 10:42 AM

Another NZ win (just). Guess the 1st 20/20 wasn't just a flash in the pan then....soo what was that about running through the NZ'ers for the rest of the series again....?

Posted by: Srini at February 27, 2009 11:38 AM

Irfan pulled it back in 18th over but let it go in last 3 balls of the match... McCullum saved the day for you guys....
So whats in store for India in ODI's?
Now you guys are the favorites to win that too... I thought that you guys are very inexperienced bowling attach but proved it wrong by sticking to the basics and bowled in the good areas. Very impressive...

Posted by: cameron at February 27, 2009 1:56 PM

I love how almost every indian commented on how new zealand got lucky and how new zealand will get thrashed in the 2nd 2020...well seems like you boys got it wrong...new zealand won the 1st match"must be luck" now new zealand won the second? whats that? a lucky 2-0 series? teach you boys for being so cocky

Posted by: Leanne at February 27, 2009 5:37 PM

totally fabulous....I was on tenterhooks during the last 5 or 6 overs....hats off to new zealand... I love the way the series is going.... I'm a die-hard India fan, but this was simply spectacular....New Zealand is giving us a run for our money :) Way to go Kiwis...fantastic game... though I'm going to pray harder for India now...n pray for Dhoni to win the toss!!!!

Posted by: Pradeep at February 27, 2009 11:12 PM

Congratulations mate.....u blokes are amazing....as Ravi Shastri rightly said....Cricket was the clear winner and u guys played sensible innings:)...Hats off to u guyz...It seems that Indian team is getting a hang of the local conditions and hope so our team will gain an upper hand by winning some matches. Best of luck mate and keep up the good work :)

Posted by: Pradeep at February 27, 2009 11:39 PM

For all those cricket enthusiasts...who are either being too sarcastic or arrogant in the comments...remember its just a game of Cricket....New Zealand played superlative game and they are clear winners.....We need to respect the New Zealand team for their efforts and wish best of luck for the Indian team....

Posted by: Vijay at February 28, 2009 2:53 AM

Good display NZ. Thanks for the 2.0 victory in 20-20 you had increased our chances of retaining 20-20 world cup ten fold. Now India had its match practice in NZ the real test of india's progress will be in next two weeks. To prove they are top dogs in ODIs india need to take the series max by fourth one day. All the best.

Posted by: PC at February 28, 2009 4:56 AM

I have been a huge fan of NZ cricket ever since I was a school boy in the 80's, and I think you Indians are under-rating this current NZ side. They are young, developing and being lead extremely well by Dan. You will struggle to beat these boys in NZ. I am very proud of this side, and very excited at seeing Ian Butler break through to the NZ one-day side...in my opinion the next 'Chris Cairns'. Go the Black Caps!!

Posted by: Aakash at February 28, 2009 12:33 PM

The last match was just a luck for your team

Posted by: Mel at March 4, 2009 5:31 AM

Dan is a great guy seriously, phenominal composure..reminds me of Stephen :). NZ team a very good team really, hey always beat India :(

Posted by: SPOT and EP at March 5, 2009 7:29 AM

NewZealand is not as great as a team and we could clearly see from the 20-20 matches that there is only one match winner Brendon Mccullum. If we get this guy out then Newzealand will struggle to get even 150.

Iain O'Brien must type as fast as he bowls. After stumps most days he adds to his popular personal blog, covering his take on the play, dressing room snippets and personal insights (he really doesn’t like bouncers). A fast-medium bowler, O’Brien has become a regular member of the New Zealand Test side over the past year and is enjoying his time at the top.
