Date-stamped : 23 Jul95 - 22:27 Tour Match: Derbyshire v Young Australia Chesterfield, 19, 20, 21 July 1995 ====> Day 1, 19 Jul 95 Owen`s rescue act tilts advantage - Neil Hallam First day of three: Young Australians (171-7) trail Derbys (191) by 20 runs DERBYSHIRE`S new commitment to rearing more of their own talent paid a modest dividend at Queen`s Park as Young Australia strug- gled towards parity on a steamy day on which the ball held sway. Derbyshire, in trouble at 40 for four after winning the toss, reached the comparative respectability of 191 thanks mainly to a brisk 65 from Johnny Owen, who is in his first season on the staff after being recruited from the Derbyshire County League. Seamers Andrew Harris and Paul Aldred, also engaged from local sources, made the ball swing lavishly to fillet Young Australia`s middle order and leave them 20 runs in arrears with three wickets standing at the close. Matt Cassar, an Australian all-rounder who is playing county league cricket while qualifying for Derbyshire, had a mixed day, however. His diligent 32 anchored their middle-order recovery but he ended up having x-rays after injuring ribs and cutting his head when colliding with the powerfully-built Matthew Hayden while attempt- ing to run him out. Derbyshire`s decision to omit half a dozen regular members of their championship side may have caused a mutter or two among the spectators but the county`s secretary, Reg Taylor, countered by saying: "It was no part of our intention to under-value this game." Only Tim Tweats passed 50 as Derbyshire turned a 43-run deficit into a lead of 247, but seamer Brad Williams was alone in being able to discomfort the batsmen with any frequency. Jo Angel, who has already played Test cricket, and Mark Harrity, who is being tipped to do so in the near future, were frankly pedestrian and leg-spinner Peter McIntyre, who has one Test to his credit, was wayward as Derbyshire applied themselves on a pitch offering a fair bit of pace and bounce. A watching former England player, who preferred to remain anonymous, was adamant that "this attack wouldn`t frighten any- body in county cricket". Harrity got rid of Adrian Rollins with one which bounced and left him but it was an ill-judged drive from Chris Adams which made it 19 for two and left Wayne Dessaur and Tweats to shore things up with a stand of 90. Dessaur lost patience with a sliced forcing stroke and Johnny Owen got over-excited after taking a heavy toll of Angel`s errors of direction, but Tweats recovered well from being poleaxed for 10 minutes by a blow in the groin from Williams and completed his maiden first-class half-century off 118 balls. Young Australia, 171 for seven overnight, were indebted to an im- pressive unbeaten 105 from wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist for reach- ing 234. His century came off only 107 balls. Love and Rick Ponting, who made 64, rattled along at six an over on an easing pitch to raise 137 for the third wicket though Der- byshire spilled two crucial chances and were compelled to use oc- casional bowlers when Devon Malcolm went off with a sore calf. Derbyshire added 26 without loss off 25 balls when play resumed at 2pm after the rain and a declaration at 316 for eight, with Dominic Cork unbeaten on 50, set a target of 274 in 51 overs. Matt Elliott was smartly taken at short leg and Matt Hayden prod- ded to second slip but Love and Ponting batted with purpose. Ponting was going at a run a ball when he skied to deep midwicket and Love, who had reached his hundred off 99 balls, followed three overs later to a return catch. Adam Gilchrist was run out attempting a second to fine leg and Shaun Young was stumped on the heave. Jo Angel survived a stump- ing chance and Stuart Law was dropped at wide mid-wicket, both at 248, before the Young Australians completed their second victory in three first-class matches.
