Shreck signs Notts extension
Posted on 05/20/2008 in Nottinghamshire
Charlie Shreck has signed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at Nottinghamshire until 2010.
Shreck, who was part of the England Lions squad in India during the winter, has started the season well with 16 wickets at 27.06 including a match-winning five-wicket haul against Lancashire.
..Charlie has been the mainstay of our bowling attack for five years and I am delighted that he has chosen to commit his future to the club,. said director of cricket Mick Newell. ..I know that his inclusion in the England squad has been discussed very seriously and the opportunity may come his way but his priority is to do well for Nottinghamshire.
..Charlie has performed well for England Lions and he can play his way into contention for the national side."
..I was very keen to extend my contract and there is nowhere else that I would rather play than Trent Bridge,. said Shreck. ..Looking around on a match day, it..s clear to see that the club is taking massive steps forwards with the ground developments and the playing squad and management are first class.
..Ryan Sidebottom had three consecutive 50 wicket seasons at Nottinghamshire before he got back into the England side and the key for me is to stay fit and take wickets consistently..

Journalists get on their bike

How do you get from the Brit Oval to Lord's without crossing the Thames? Six intrepid cyclists are about to prove it can be done and all in a good cause.
They are cycling from Kennington to St John's Wood the long way round, taking in all 18 first-class county headquarters - a trip of more than 1,000 miles over 16 days.
The tour has been devised by two cricket writers who spend most of their time pedalling opinions on the game: David Lloyd of the London Evening Standard and Colin Bateman of the Daily Express.

Footitt injury blow
Posted on 02/20/2008 in Nottinghamshire
Mark Footitt, the Nottinghamshire left-arm quick bowler, will miss the start of the season with a back injury.
He had been suffered with a bulging disc for some time and it had been hoped that rest and injections would solve the problem, but it was eventually decided that surgery was required.
"He's on the mend and is swimming and starting gentle exercises, but won't be available until May," said director of cricket Mick Newell.
Footitt's career has been hit by injuries and he has been limited to eight first-class matches.

Swann extends Notts contract
Posted on 01/31/2008 in Nottinghamshire
Graeme Swann has guaranteed his next three years will be at Nottinghamshire, after renewing his deal to take him to the end of 2010. He has had three seasons with the county after leaving Northamptonshire in 2005 and Nottinghamshire..s director of cricket, Mick Newell, believes he is now at the peak of his career.
..I..m pleased to tie him up for a long period,. said Newell. ..He..s been excellent for us ever since he joined and is probably bowling the best he has in his career. He..s one of our key players in all forms of the game with his bowling, batting and fielding and is a central character in the dressing room.

Crawley lifts Hampshire to victory
Posted on 08/02/2007 in
John Crawley may have missed out on a hundred but his unbeaten 97 helped Hampshire to a last-over win against Nottinghamshire under the lights in Tuesday..s Pro40 match.
While David Hussey was making his 81, Notts looked set for a big total, but his dismissal at 197 triggered a mini-slide, leaving them with a still-sizeable 214. Crawley led from the front, though, and his opening stand of 88 with Michael Lumb (53) gave Hampshire the edge at the Rose Bowl and they eased home with five balls to spare.

Alleyne leaves Nottinghamshire
Posted on 07/24/2007 in Nottinghamshire
David Alleyne, Nottinghamshire..s reserve wicketkeeper, has left the club by mutual consent after agreeing a release from his contract which was due to run until the end of 2008.
Alleyne hasn..t been able to secure any first-team openings with Chris Read commanding a regular spot now he has moved down England..s pecking order.
..With Chris not currently in England..s plans, we felt that it was unfair on David to be kicking his heels in the Second XI,.. said director of cricket Mick Newell. ..We also have Bilal Shafayat available to offer us a younger option as back-up wicketkeeper and given the situation, we felt it was best to give David the chance to look for first team cricket..
Newell made it clear that Alleyne left on good terms: ..I do want to thank David for his work during his time with us. He never let us down when he played and proved an excellent and able deputy..
Alleyne signed from Middlesex in 2004 and played 17 first-class matches for Nottinghamshire, averaging 30.47, while claiming 50 victims behind the stumps.

Some county players earn less than minimum wage
Posted on 07/23/2007 in Miscellaneous
In The Sunday Telegraph , Steve James highlights the disparity between the high earners in English cricket and those at the bottom of the food chain.
The Professional Cricketers' Association estimates that a cricketer works about 50 hours a week (including play, travel, training and time spent away from home). This means, in broad terms, that a player needs to earn more than £7,000 per season to be over the minimum wage. There are definitely players earning less than that; indeed there are players earning as little as £3,000 per season.

Notts release Mierkalns

Josh Mierkalns, the Nottinghamshire second XI batsman, has been released from the club.
Wayne Noon, Notts.. assistant manager, said ..things haven..t worked out and Josh has not kicked on as we would have liked,. adding that the batsman hadn..t produced the weight of runs they were expecting.
Mierkalns, 21, spent two years with the club..s academy before joining the staff on a summer contract. He made his debut for their second XI at the age of 16 and his first-class debut last season.
Mierkalns played twice in the Twenty20 Cup, once in the NatWest Pro-40 League and also made one first-class appearance against West Indies A.

Gordon Stringfellow, Notts scorer, dies aged 72
Posted on 06/05/2007 in Nottinghamshire
Gordon Stringfellow, the Nottinghamshire scorer, has died at his home in Arnold aged 72.
A popular and well-known figure at Trent Bridge, Stringfellow succeeded Len Beaumont as the first XI scorer in 1994 after working alongside his predecessor the previous summer.
A highly-regarded seam bowler at club level, he once took a double hat-trick against Mapperley Hospital in the Nottingham Evening League in 1972. Affectionately known as ..Stringy.. by friends and colleagues, he watched his old club take on Kimberley in the Notts Premier League on Saturday.
Ill health limited him to scoring home matches in recent seasons, but his sharp eye and love of the game was undiminished.
..Stringy was a familiar and friendly face to everyone at Trent Bridge and had a real passion for the game,. Mick Newell, the club..s director of cricket said: ..He was always very happy to talk about cricket and often acted as an unofficial psychologist for the players if they needed cheering up.
..He shared in the winning and the losing just as much as the squad, and will be deeply missed by everyone..

Down with the old guard
Posted on 10/17/2006 in Nottinghamshire
Nottinghamshire emulated Yorkshire..s unwanted feat of 2002 by being relegated the year after they won the Championship. Poor early season weather did not help but the key components of their 2005 success .. effective swing bowlers and heavy runscoring in the top order .. were missing. Openers Darren Bicknell and Jason Gallian mustered only one century stand, David Hussey and Stephen Fleming were inconsistent and Ryan Sidebottom found form only briefly .. and late. Still, they could easily have stayed up. A truly abject performance against Sussex in the last match yielded a solitary point when one more would have meant safety. With hindsight the county should have freshened up an ageing squad in the winter after they won the title. Russell Warren, Anurag Singh and Greg Smith were all released after playing peripheral roles this year. There was more youthful vigour about the one-day cricket, an area that director of cricket, Mick Newell, had identified as needing attention. They almost won the Twenty20 Cup and the one-day league but those near-misses were scant consolation.

Smith and McMahon leave
Posted on 09/29/2006 in Nottinghamshire
Will Smith, the young opening batsman, has opted to leave Trent Bridge despite appearing part of the club's future. With Darren Bicknell retiring he could have had an extended run next season but is believed to be considering a move to Durham. The arrival of Will Jefferson from Essex could have played a part in his decision.
Mick Newell, the Nottinghamshire cricket manager, said: "It's disappointing he chose to leave as we felt he had plenty of first-team opportunity and would have continued to do so."
Paul McMahon, the 23-year-old offspinner, has told to search for first-team chances elsewhere with the Trent Bridge surface not often requiring two spinners. His opportunities have been limited since Stuart MacGill's time at the club and now with Graeme Swann taking the main spinner's berth.
Nottinghamshire, who were relegated on the final Championship day of the season, are expected to name some new signings in the next couple of weeks.

Best Footitt forward
Posted on 09/26/2006 in Nottinghamshire
The county's sensitive handling of Mark Footitt .. a quick bowler already talked of as an England candidate in the near future .. was rewarded with a first five-wicket haul, against West Indies A.
Footitt, who is 20, bowls leftarm over, can swing the ball back in to the right-hander and, on his day, is quicker than anyone on the staff. But Nottinghamshire have resisted the temptation to
push the shy youngster from the Papplewick and Linby club too far too soon. ..Mark has a lot of raw potential but still has a lot to learn,. says Mick Newell, the director of cricket. ..He needs to get himself a little bit fitter and to be a little bit more cricket-wise. I..m sure he will come through
over the next couple of years but I didn..t really expect him to emerge this year..
Phil DeFreitas, the county..s part-time bowling coach, has kept a fatherly eye on Footitt. ..Phil has been a massive help,. says Footitt, ..and the fact that we play club cricket together means that he can help me with my game at the weekends, not just in the week. We have been doing drills about bowling in the right areas off a short run-up..

Samit Patel extends contract
Posted on 09/18/2006 in Nottinghamshire
Samit Patel, the Nottinghamshire batsman, has extended his contract with the club until 2009.
..This year has been a good one for me personally and it..s been great to play regular first-team cricket," he said in a statement released on Monday. ..I feel I..ve begun to take important steps forward with my performances. I..m giving myself more chances to score runs and making bigger contributions to the team.
..You can..t play anywhere better than at Trent Bridge and it..s the only place I want to be for my whole career..
Patel, 21, played a key role in the Nottinghamshire's Twenty20 Cup campaign this season and recently scored his maiden Championship century against Middlesex at Lord..s.
..Samit has established himself in the team in all competitions and that..s down to all the hard work he..s put in," Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire's director of cricket, said. "He..s a far better player now than 12 months ago and it..s great to see a local lad in the side. He has the potential to play at a higher level but knows he will need to continue to progress with us to do that..

Newell for renewal
Posted on 08/24/2006 in Nottinghamshire
Nottinghamshire..s director of cricket Mick Newell has promised to bring in three or four new signings in an attempt to freshen up his squad after a failed defence of the Championship title.
Newell showed touching faith in the squad that won the Championship 12 months ago when he made no new signings last winter. With hindsight he may have shown too much loyalty to ageing players who have struggled to rediscover the winning formula.
..There will be a lot of changes with some senior guys who have done a lot of good service for the club moving on,. Newell says. ..There will be at least three, possibly four, signings; batsmen and bowlers..
One of the signings will be an opening batsman to replace Darren Bicknell, who has timed his retirement announcement to coincide with that of his younger brother Martin, the Surrey and former England seamer. Nottinghamshire..s policy of playing a more youthful side in one-day cricket helped them to qualify for the Twenty20 Cup finals day. But Samit Patel..s limited-overs success has not been sufficient to secure a place in Nottinghamshire..s Championship side. A change of county may be on the cards for the former England Under-19 allrounder who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Players thrive on steep earning curve
Posted on 07/30/2006 in Derbyshire
Steve James, the former Glamorgan and England opener, has revealed that the average salary for a county player is around £40,000. Surrey top the pay league, with their players earning an average salary of £60,000, and that excludes the bumper earnings of their overseas recruits. Yorkshire are at the bottom of the pay league, with an average salary of £30,000.
Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, James's article has gone a long way to dispelling the belief that county cricketers are sports paupers. While they still might to be able to hold a candle to any footballers in the Premier League, their pay is not as bad as it once was.

This summer he is averaging 35 from nine Championship matches but Notts have some young batsmen waiting in the wings such as Will Smith and Samit Patel. Martin Bicknell is also ended his career at the end of the summer at Surrey.

Tickets selling fast for Trent Bridge
Posted on 07/13/2006 in Nottinghamshire
With Nottinghamshire featuring in their first Twenty20 quarter final, the Trent Bridge fans have pledged their support in the best way possible and have ensured they will be giving their full support to the team. Tickets for the match went on sale on Wednesday morning and more than 2000 seats have been booked for the clash with the Northamptonshire on July 24.
Deputy chief executive, Lisa Pursehouse responded to the demand and said. ..We knew there would be a big response but to be honest it has exceeded expectations. We deliberately gave people the opportunity to book in advance and get a discount and many are keen to take advantage of that.
"Clearly people want to be part of a special occasion and with another 12 days to go, we expect numbers to build steadily. The ticket office is going to be open over the weekend during our Championship match with Hampshire and it will be interesting to see what the figures are like on Monday morning..
Tickets can be purchased from the Trent Bridge ticket office by calling 0870 168 8888 or by logging onto www.nottsccc.co.uk. The closing date for advanced bookings is 1pm on Saturday July 22.

I'm a journalist, get me out of here
Posted on 06/23/2006 in Kent
It..s not all glamour being a cricket reporter ploughing your way round the county circuit. The Daily Telegraph..s Charles Randall seemed to have had more than enough of Canterbury, where a combination of some dreadfully dull batting from Kent and a pitch with as much life as a cadaver finally did for him.
..A huge total on an easy-paced strip should impose fatigue and 'scoreboard pressure' on the opposition, though this ponderous exercise at the St Lawrence Ground proved unedifying as neither side gained maximum batting or bowling points.
Kent's cynical effort provided minimal personal development value, minimal entertainment and very little advantage in the table against one of the lowest counties..

Gloved and waiting
Posted on 06/20/2006 in Nottinghamshire
David Alleyne, now 30, spent five seasons as Middlesex..s understudy keeper before leaving in 2004, with the sensible expectation of regular first-team cricket at Notts. But Chris Read fell out of favour with England, leaving Alleyne back in the 2nd XI. ..I think most people expected Chris to be England..s wicketkeeper for
10 years,. Alleyne says. ..But he got dropped by England during the series in the West Indies, which was disappointing for him and frustrating for me.
..Being a reserve wicketkeeper does test your professionalism. Motivation isn..t a problem. It..s a case of trying to maintain my own standards and scoring as many runs as I can to force my way into the first team as a batsman..
Given a rare chance against Warwickshire, while Read was with England A, Alleyne hit a fifty and a maiden first-class century. But it was not enough to save the team from defeat or Alleyne from the chop. ..We..ve had a pretty settled batting order for a couple of years so it..s not been easy to break in,. he says. ..But I hope it will remind people what I..m capable of..
