Underground Lord's

Posted on 03/22/2008 in MCC

The tunnels beneath Lord's, two of which used to carry tube trains, could be converted into indoor nets or used as walkways to cope with pedestrian congestion which is expected to increase dramatically in the next ten years.

David Batts, the MCC deputy chief executive, said: "It would be great to turn them into something useful. One of the main planks of our masterplan for Lord's is to create a cricket academy. We need new indoor nets and there is no reason why they shouldn't be underground like the ones at the Oval. advertisement

"There are alternatives: the tunnels could become a storage facility, a car park, or a health club. We are receiving proposals from architects and we will come up with a shortlist over the next couple of weeks."

The tunnels used to house trains on the Metropolitan and Jubilee lines. A third tunnel still functions, carrying trains from Marylebone to Birmingham.

Cranleigh host spirit of cricket debate

Posted on 02/26/2008 in MCC

Cranleigh School in Surrey will host an MCC spirit of cricket evening involving current and former England cricketers.

Chris Cowdrey, the former England captain, will host the event and will be joined by Monty Panesar, Middlesex captain Ed Smith and the national selector, Geoff Miller, in discussing the spirit of cricket and issues affecting the game.

The evening at Cranleigh is a spin-off of the annual Cowdrey Lecture, which was first delivered by Richie Benaud in 2001.

"I'm proud of my father's achievement, along with Ted Dexter, of setting out a vision for the spirit of cricket,. said Cowdrey. ..It was terrific for this to become part of the Laws of cricket but the challenge now is to make this relevant to cricketers of the future. Cranleigh School has set us the challenge of having a fun evening which also gets to grips with some of the big questions facing the game today..

Wherefore art thou, Romeo? Shakespeare comes to Lord's © Graham Morris

A Shakespeare production is set to be staged at Lord's, for the first time in its 220-year history.

If permission is granted, Romeo and Juliet will be performed on Sunday 2 September, in front of the pavilion. MCC expect 500 people to attend.

MCC's secretary and chief executive, Keith Bradshaw, said: "This is a great partnership between MCC and Shakespeare's Globe. It's a tremendous opportunity for us to stage a world-class Shakespeare production at Lord's. The feedback from local residents and MCC Members has already been tremendous. I'm optimistic that we'll get all the necessary go-aheads from the Council. If so, I'm sure we'll have a great success on our hands."

The troupe's director, Edward Dick, said: "Everyone at Shakespeare's Globe is already looking forward to hitting the road for the first time, and performing at great venues right across the country. It's what happened 400 years ago, when tours played a key role in the itineraries of Elizabethan acting companies. We're particularly excited by the prospect of performing at Lord's. It's always a great setting; I'm sure it would provide our first-ever tour with a fantastic finale."

Tickets cost £35 and £20 and will be on sale to local residents and MCC members only initially.
