Tom Smith gets Leicestershire loan spell

Posted on 06/27/2008 in Leicestershire

Tom Smith, the Lancashire allrounder, has joined Leicestershire on a month-long loan spell.

With Lancashire having a full complement of fast bowlers available .. including Andrew Flintoff .. Smith..s first-team chances would have been limited at Old Trafford, so the loan provides him with the chance to getting some competitive cricket.

Smith goes straight into Leicestershire..s squad for their County Championship match against Worcestershire at Grace Road starting on Sunday.

Lancashire cricket manager Mike Watkinson said: "Tom has recently missed seven weeks of cricket due to a thigh injury. This loan spell is a great opportunity for him to get some regular first team experience on his return to action."

The loan agreement allows Smith to be recalled if required by Lancashire.

How do you get from the Brit Oval to Lord's without crossing the Thames? Six intrepid cyclists are about to prove it can be done and all in a good cause.

They are cycling from Kennington to St John's Wood the long way round, taking in all 18 first-class county headquarters - a trip of more than 1,000 miles over 16 days.

The tour has been devised by two cricket writers who spend most of their time pedalling opinions on the game: David Lloyd of the London Evening Standard and Colin Bateman of the Daily Express.

Some county players earn less than minimum wage

Posted on 07/23/2007 in Miscellaneous

In The Sunday Telegraph , Steve James highlights the disparity between the high earners in English cricket and those at the bottom of the food chain.

The Professional Cricketers' Association estimates that a cricketer works about 50 hours a week (including play, travel, training and time spent away from home). This means, in broad terms, that a player needs to earn more than £7,000 per season to be over the minimum wage. There are definitely players earning less than that; indeed there are players earning as little as £3,000 per season.

Kruger becomes latest Kolpak

Posted on 05/25/2007 in Leicestershire

Leicestershire have signed South African paceman Garnett Kruger on a Kolpak deal as a replacement for Charl Langeveldt.

Three years ago Kruger was due to line up as an overseas player before injury meant he had to pull out.

..Not only did Charl do a good job for us, he was also a great influence on the younger bowlers around him,. Tim Boon told the club website. ..But he had a contract with Netherfield and he has to honour that agreement now.

..We are looking to Garnett to come in and do a similar job for us over the next couple of months, at which point we will review the situation..

Kruger has played three ODIs and a Twenty20 for South Africa and is Leicestershire..s second Kolpak signing in two weeks after they brought in Arno Jacobs to bolster the batting.

Stiff signs at Grace Road

Posted on 03/13/2007 in Leicestershire

Leicestershire's squad for the new season continues to take shape after David Stiff, the former Kent seamer, signed a one-year deal and Tom New, their reserve keeper, agreed a two-year extension.

Stiff, who was released by Kent at the end of the 2006 season after making just eight appearances in three seasons, has impressed Leicestershire during a pre-season trail period.

New, meanwhile, is highly rated at Grace Road and has occasionally played as a specialist batsman. However, with Paul Nixon now in the England one-day squad he could have some early season chances with the gloves.

Tim Boon, Leicestershire's coach, was delighted with New's attitude. "Tom has shown a great desire to succeed, whether he is deputising for Paul Nixon or in the side as a batsman alone. There is no doubt that he has considerable potential and I am confident that he can begin to fulfil that in the coming season."

The club are currently on a pre-season tour of Sri Lanka and India and open their season against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on April 18.

Leicestershire sign Amjad

Posted on 01/31/2007 in Leicestershire

Mansoor Amjad, the 19-year-old Pakistani legspinner, as re-signed for Leicestershire as one of their two overseas players for the 2007 season.

Amjad had a brief spell at Grace Road as a replacement for Dinesh Mongia but didn't set the world alight - going wicketless in his only Championship outing - and was forced to return home with a finger injury.

Leicestershire coach Tim Boon said: "I feel we have unearthed a gem in Mansoor, who is totally committed to Leicestershire and desperate to follow in the footsteps of Mushtaq Ahmed and Danish Kaneria."

A Boon in more ways than one

Posted on 10/17/2006 in Leicestershire

Tim Boon made a smooth transition from international to county coaching and his side responded. They had a trophy .. the Twenty20 Cup .. as proof of their improvement and used their one-day skills to mount some thrilling .. and successful .. Championship run chases. Four wins in their last six games brought a creditable fourth place. The improvement was achieved with limited input from overseas players .. Dinesh Mongia missed six games while away with India and Adam Griffith and Mansoor Amjad broke down. Instead Boon freshened up his squad and lowered the average age with some shrewd bargain buys. But it was the experience of HD Ackerman .. 1,804 Championship runs before he returned to South Africa .. and Paul Nixon, with his jack-in-the-box energy, that gave Leicestershire mid-season impetus. Boon..s next tasks are to translate Twenty20 success into the longer one-day competitions and to retain the services of Stuart Broad. Potentially a match-winning fast bowler, Broad was the cricket writers.. young player of the year and won his first one-day international cap but that only excited the other counties. He is under contract for another season and, despite rumours of a move to Surrey, Boon says he is staying put.

Asian breakthrough

Posted on 09/26/2006 in Leicestershire

Leicestershire hope Jigar Naik will be a role model for the local Asian community. The offspinner, 22, became the first Leicester-born Asian to represent the county.

..We hope it shows to the local community that, if you are good enough, you will get a chance,. says Phil Whitticase, Leicestershire..s head coach. Naik, who progressed from Kibworth and Billesdon, was given his chance after consistent performances in the 2nd XI.

..He gets the ball to pick up pace off the pitch and he extracts bounce and turn,. Whitticase says. ..He..s at Loughborough University and hopefully will get more firstclass exposure with them next season.. Whitticase is already working with a promising batch of Leicestershire-born Asians in the county..s academy, notably Ramandeep Singh Ghuman, a 12-year-old legspinner, and Shiv Thakor, a powerfully built 13-yearold batsman.

Players thrive on steep earning curve

Posted on 07/30/2006 in Derbyshire

Steve James, the former Glamorgan and England opener, has revealed that the average salary for a county player is around £40,000. Surrey top the pay league, with their players earning an average salary of £60,000, and that excludes the bumper earnings of their overseas recruits. Yorkshire are at the bottom of the pay league, with an average salary of £30,000.

Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, James's article has gone a long way to dispelling the belief that county cricketers are sports paupers. While they still might to be able to hold a candle to any footballers in the Premier League, their pay is not as bad as it once was.

Habib and Sheriyar to leave Leicestershire

Posted on 07/05/2006 in Leicestershire

Aftab Habib and Alamgir Sheriyar are to leave Leicestershire, who have revealed the pair will not have their contracts renewed at the end of the season.

"We are currently going through a transitional period here at Grace Road and, in planning for the long-term future, we decided that we would not be offering either Aftab or Alamgir new contracts," Tim Boon, the county's coach, explained.

"It is important now that we do all we can to help them fulfil their ambitions in terms of the right career move," he said. "We have an obligation therefore to give them every opportunity to actively pursue a move to another county or a career elsewhere, which they can now do with our assistance and support."

Back to the future

Posted on 06/20/2006 in Leicestershire

Alamgir Sheriyar..s career has gone full circle following his return to Leicestershire after an 11-year absence. Sheriyar gave himself a year to find another county after he was released by Kent last September. Leicestershire, anxious to sign an experienced seamer to fill the gap left by the departure of Ottis Gibson, stepped in after he impressed in pre-season trials.

..The only reason I left Leicestershire in the first place is because we had a strong seam attack with players like Alan Mullally and David Millns,. Sheriyar continues. ..I moved to Worcestershire because of the chance to play regular first-team cricket.

..Leicestershire were made aware of my situation and I..m glad to be back. I haven..t played much first-team cricket over the last two years for various reasons, so I..m coming back pretty fresh..
