Jonathan Clare, the Derbyshire allrounder, has signed a new contract to take him through to the end of the 2009 season with a clause to extend it for a further year.

Journalists get on their bike

Posted on 04/29/2008 in Miscellaneous

How do you get from the Brit Oval to Lord's without crossing the Thames? Six intrepid cyclists are about to prove it can be done and all in a good cause.

They are cycling from Kennington to St John's Wood the long way round, taking in all 18 first-class county headquarters - a trip of more than 1,000 miles over 16 days.

The tour has been devised by two cricket writers who spend most of their time pedalling opinions on the game: David Lloyd of the London Evening Standard and Colin Bateman of the Daily Express.

Derbyshire close to batsman deal

Posted on 04/05/2008 in Derbyshire

Derbyshire are set to announce the signing of a young overseas batsman on a Kolpak deal after the player went for a registration interview with the ECB.

The name has yet to be released, and Derbyshire will have to wait until the ECB have a board meeting on April 9 for confirmation, but Tom Sears is confident the deal will go ahead.

..It went very well and we don't anticipate a problem," Sears told the Derby Evening Telegraph. "All being well, we expect to announce our new signing at the press day on Wednesday."

The club also hope to sign a Kolpak bowler in the near future as John Morris, the coach, completes his squad for 2008 after Wavell Hinds had his registration turned down by the ECB.

Adnan released by Derbyshire

Posted on 09/28/2007 in Derbyshire

Hassan Adnan, the Derbyshire batsman, was not offered a new contract and has left the club after five seasons.

Adnan, 33, played 65 first-class matches for the club scoring 3678 runs at 35.36. He never matched the prolific form he showed in 2004 when, in his second season, he scored 1380 runs at 51.11. In 2007, he averaged just 21 in 11 matches.

..It is never a nice time informing players that they have to go," John Morris, Derbyshire's director of cricket said, "especially when it is such a loyal servant and great team man as Hassan has been to Derbyshire."

"It has been a very difficult decision," Botha said. "At this stage of my career, I feel this is the right move for me and an exciting opportunity that I might not get again."

John Morris, Derbyshire's director of cricket, admitted he was "very disappointed" to lose Botha mid-season but stressed it would give him a chance to "assess players in the remaining matches this year who are going to be a part of Derbyshire's future".

Wheater stars in Essex win

Posted on 08/29/2007 in

Some may say the Floodlit Cup is just another county money-spinner. Some may even ask what it is. But for the 2700 spectators who came to Chelmsford on Tuesday evening, and for 17-year-old debutant Adam Wheater, this was a Twenty20 game to savour.

Wheater, the wicketkeeper/batsman was Essex..s hero: his four dismissals, a run-out and a rapid 39 not out helping them to beat Derbyshire by six wickets. The visitors could only muster 119 for 9 after choosing to bat as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

Tony Palladino struck in his first two overs to send back openers Michael Dighton (5) and Phil Weston (15). Derbyshire captain Simon Katich was just getting into his stride when two run outs sent his team..s innings into freefall.

Hassan Adnan fell to a Graham Napier pick up and throw off his own bowling before Katich went following a 15-ball 21 with Wheater given another chance to showcase his talents. Non-striker Katich ran through for a bye after a slight fumble by Wheater but the wicketkeeper quickly recovered to effect a direct hit.

Derbyshire tells Taylor he must stay and fight for a place

Posted on 07/29/2007 in Derbyshire

Derbyshire have turned down Chris Taylor's request to be released a year into a two-year contract. He has struggled for runs this season and was criticised for scoring too slowly in a recent 2nd XI game.

"Chris asked for an improved contract. We were prepared to do that. We would now like that to be honoured," said Tom Sears, Derbyshire's chief executive. "Contracts work both ways. We have shown faith in Chris and we expect something back. He has been assured by the chairman and the captain that he is an important part of our plans."

Some county players earn less than minimum wage

Posted on 07/23/2007 in Miscellaneous

In The Sunday Telegraph , Steve James highlights the disparity between the high earners in English cricket and those at the bottom of the food chain.

The Professional Cricketers' Association estimates that a cricketer works about 50 hours a week (including play, travel, training and time spent away from home). This means, in broad terms, that a player needs to earn more than £7,000 per season to be over the minimum wage. There are definitely players earning less than that; indeed there are players earning as little as £3,000 per season.

Jones leaves his mark in passing

Posted on 10/17/2006 in Derbyshire

Once again a Derbyshire man lifted the County Championship. Unfortunately Chris Adams was
leading Sussex at the time. But after a decade of squandering talents like Adams sensible management produced a warm glow at Derby. Kindled by a pre-season darts night in
Graeme Welch..s local, it developed with two Championship wins in the first three, victory at the
Racecourse Ground to end a 33- match hex, a lucrative return to rustic Chesterfield, the emergence of Gary Ballance and Wayne White and a projected profit, after last year..s unsustainable £215,000 loss. The new glow helped alchemise David Houghton..s signings
.. condemned by vocal members at the pre-season AGM as ..rejects.. The best, Steffan Jones pounded out 56 wickets, almost twice what any of his team-mates managed. The batting averages, with the 11th man on 22, reflect a more solid order. Injuries and a weakness
against spin meant the side limped to the finish but chief executive Tom Sears admits he would have accepted fifth place in April. However, in September Jones left for Somerset, having
received a contract offer he called ..insulting.. It leaves Houghton with no strike bowler and a
serious problem. By opening with a low offer the management misjudged a proud man. But for once cock-ups were the aberration not the rule.

Derbyshire gain Hopes

Posted on 10/07/2006 in Derbyshire

Derbyshire have signed James Hopes, the Queensland allrounder, as their second overseas player for the 2007 season. He has played nine one-day internationals but is not involved in the current Australian squad preparing for the Champions Trophy.

Hopes will join Travis Birt, the Tasmanian batsman, at the County Ground and is a replacement for Michael di Venuto, whose services were not retained after the 2006 season.

Hopes told the Derbyshire website: ..I have always wanted to play county cricket and I am delighted to have signed for Derbyshire. I am looking forward to making a big contribution with both bat and ball and hopefully some big performances in England will do my international career no harm.

David Houghton, the director of cricket, added: ..We have managed to capture one of the best allrounders in Australian cricket, a player who has forced his way into the best side in the world in the last 12 months, James will be a great addition to our side.

..He has the priceless ability of being able to win matches with both the bat and the ball and will bring a great balance to our team in all formats of the game..

Young entry

Posted on 09/17/2006 in Derbyshire

Not long ago the county..s youth policy was Ian Blackwell .. soon lured to Somerset .. and a handful of not quite good enough club players.

But this year has seen an impressive flowering. Four players made England..s three age-group sides, about twice the national average and a club record. In late July Jake Needham became the club..s first England Under-19 Test player since Dominic Cork. A batting offspinner with a head for pressure situations, he has already bowled tidily in nine 1st XI one-dayers. Needham is being pushed by fellow offspinner Chris Paget, already Derbyshire..s youngest first-class player.

In England..s Under-17 side Tom Poynton is a batting wicketkeeper and Dan Redfern a left-handed strokeplayer with 2nd XI centuries behind him. Both were selected a year early. Gary Ballance (see Rising Star, TWC September), the coach David Houghton..s 16-year old Zimbabwean nephew, made 73 in his second Pro40 game. He has temporarily overtaken a local right-hander Paul Borrington .. a former England Under-17 man who builds big gritty innings according to the academy director Karl Krikken. And playing as an allrounder in the national Under- 15s is Michael Hill, already batting at No. 4 in the Birmingham League and pinched from under the nose of Warwickshire.

Krikken is unsure who will make the grade .. ..It depends on temperament. .. but is quietly confident. ..It..s going really well. With the lack of money Derbyshire..s had, we..ve got to
produce our own.. And it could get better yet, with the club now running an academy in Staffordshire, home of two half decent former players .. Kim Barnett and Cork.

Jones returns to Somerset

Steffan Jones, the seam bowler, is leaving Derbyshire to return to his former county, Somerset, on a three-year contract for family reasons. Jones has enjoyed a successful season at Derby, taking 59 wickets so far, but rejected a new two-year deal.

Jones said: "I have had many sleepless nights in recent weeks over this decision and I have to point out that it is for purely family reasons. My wife Alex is expecting our first child and she is from Taunton and all her family are based there."

Jones played for Somerset from 1997-2003 before joining Northamptonshire for two seasons then moving north to Derby.

Michael di Venuto is set to leave Derbyshire at the end of the season. The club are believed not to want to offer him a new contract with counties allowed just one overseas player from 2008.

di Venuto told Derby Evening Telegraph: "I've still not officially been told but I've known for two months there would not be an offer coming."

He is Derbyshire's leading run scorer this season and has had interest from other counties, but has to decide if he wants to return to county cricket.

Jones the happy

Posted on 07/31/2006 in Derbyshire

Confident and laughing, Steffan Jones presents the new smiling face of Derbyshire. Last season Jones prised nine Championship wickets from Northampton..s benign pitches in six games. Halfway through this one he had more Division Two victims .. 32 .. than any homegrown player. What went right? ..Everything really,. he says. ..I..m bowling for a start. Last half of last season I didn..t play. And Dave Houghton is the best coach I..ve had. He really rates me, which makes a difference to my confidence. They just told me to go out and bowl quickly, which I..m doing: I..m bowling quicker than I..ve ever done. Dave Houghton gave me a goal. I..m just really, really happy in myself. I..ve had my first baby, so that..s given me an extra incentive . I..ve got to perform, take wickets, win a contract.. Although June brought two Championship defeats, dampening the wilder talk about blazing to promotion, some things really have changed at Derby .. including the traditional greentops. ..It..s very like what I was bowling on at Somerset,. says a surprised Jones.

Players thrive on steep earning curve

Posted on 07/30/2006 in Derbyshire

Steve James, the former Glamorgan and England opener, has revealed that the average salary for a county player is around £40,000. Surrey top the pay league, with their players earning an average salary of £60,000, and that excludes the bumper earnings of their overseas recruits. Yorkshire are at the bottom of the pay league, with an average salary of £30,000.

Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, James's article has gone a long way to dispelling the belief that county cricketers are sports paupers. While they still might to be able to hold a candle to any footballers in the Premier League, their pay is not as bad as it once was.

Peak performance

Posted on 06/20/2006 in Derbyshire

In May alone Derbyshire won as many Championship matches as in the previous two years. By early June they were top of Division Two and eyeing a C&G final. So where did it all go right?

By going back to basics, says their director of cricket David Houghton. ..We had a very long pre-season, came back in February. Everybody did the same hard work and everybody saw it. We didn..t go away and our week at an army camp was cancelled. We just had a day in the Peak District..

The simple approach has continued. ..We don..t do any of these fancy warm-ups,. said their inspirational Grolsch-and-gaspers captain Graeme Welch recently. What have they done with Steffan Jones, who has provided a new sharp edge with 23 wickets in five Championship games, more than in two seasons at Northamptonshire?

..Well, he..s been allowed to bowl,. says Houghton simply. ..I said, ..You..re going to bowl 700-800 overs a season... And he said, ..That..s exactly what I want.... Finally, a note of caution: in 2002 Derbyshire won five of their first six Division Two matches .. and finished sixth. Can they keep it up? ..Oh yeah,. says Houghton. ..This is a turn-around..

Wagg determined to take his chance

Posted on 04/18/2006 in Derbyshire

After serving a 15-month ban for failing a drugs test, Graham Wagg insists that he has a lot to offer Derbyshire, and has received the support and praise from his captain Graeme Welch:

..It would be great to get back to where I was before,. Wagg told ecb.co.uk. ..It was brilliant when we went to India .. it was an awesome experience. It was great to be there and I want to be there again, but my main goal is score a lot of runs, take a lot of wickets in first class cricket, and I'm always going to be knocking on the door.

..It doesn't matter who you are .. if you're scoring runs and taking wickets, you have always got that chance, and I want to get back to where I was or even better..

Derbyshire want to host international fixtures when the redevelopment of the Racecourse Ground is complete. ..We want to give Derbyshire a stadium that is capable of staging one-day internationals and Twenty20 finals,. says chief executive Tom Sears. ..If we could even get one international match every three years, that would give us a lot more financial security.. The first stage of redevelopment is appointing a
development company that will aim to sell off land to fund an extra 6,000 seats at the ground.
