David Ward retires from Minor Counties cricket

David Ward, the former Surrey batsman, has hung up his boots for the final time. Ward, 47, has spent 12 years dominating Minor Counties cricket for Hertfordshire, in which time he amassed more than 6000 runs at 53.53.

Ervine commits to Hampshire and England

Ervine has signed a new two-year contract with Hampshire until end of the 2010 season. Ervine, the former Zimbabwe allrounder, has also committed to spend more than 210 days annually in England over the next four years in order to qualify for England.

Legspinner Lawson released

Yorkshire have released legspinner Mark Lawson and he is free to search for a new county immediately.

He has struggled for first-team chances since the emergence of Adil Rashid and leaves having played 16 matches and taken 42 wickets. His career best is 6 for 88 against Middlesex, who he has spent time with this season and played for against the South Africans at Uxbridge.

Housego commits to Middlesex

Dan Housego, the 19-year-old Middlesex batsman, has signed a new two-year contract with the club.

Housego made his first-class debut against Derbyshire last week and is currently playing in his home debut at Lord's against Leicestershire. He also featured in the victorious Twenty20 Cup winning squad.

Specialist fielding role for Smith

Ben Smith has extended his contract with Worcestershire by two years, and has also taken on a role as specialist fielding coach.

"We are delighted that Ben has agreed to extend his playing contract for a further two years. He is the ultimate professional in terms of attitude, work ethic and performance," Steve Rhodes, the club's director of cricket, said. "These qualities rub off on other players which means he plays a key role on and off the field. Whilst his cricket will remain a priority, we want our younger players to benefit from his skills hence the offer of the full time post as a specialist fielding coach."

Smith added: "This is an important opportunity as it allows me to continue playing for Worcestershire which is of paramount importance to me but also enables me to start developing a future career in cricket. Since joining the county in 2002, I have seen the team develop a blend of youth and experience which augurs well for the next few years and I really look forward to being an integral part of what we all believe will be great success on the field."

Lucas extends contract

David Lucas, the left-arm seamer, has signed a two-year extension to his Northamptonshire contract, keeping him at the club until 2010.

He has had a solid 2008 with 34 wickets - the best haul of his career - at 28.44 in the Championship.

..David has bowled consistently well this season, especially in [the] Championship," said chief executive Mark Tagg. "Since he joined Northamptonshire we have seen steady improvement and we look forward to David maturing into a top quality bowler over the next two seasons..

"I have enjoyed my time since I joined in 2007 on a three month trial, and for the club to offer me a two year contract shows that they have faith in me," Lucas said.

Tudor back at The Oval

Alex Tudor has returned to Surrey, his former county, on loan after being released by Essex earlier this season. He has gone straight into their squad for the Championship match against Sussex at The Oval.

Moore reveals England dream

Worcestershire opener Stephen Moore is hoping to catch the eye of the England selectors after consistent first-class performances. Moore, who was born in South Africa, is the leading run-scorer in first-class cricket this year in either division with more than 1000 runs, helping their promotion push in the Championship. Only Vikram Solanki, his team-mate, and Somerset..s Marcus Trescothick have brought up four figures, while Moore has the most with 1218.

du Plessis signs new three-year deal

Francois du Plessis has extended his current Lancashire contract for three years which will keep him at the county until 2011 subject to work permit and registration. Du Plessis will continue to play for South African side Nashua Titans in their domestic competitions during the English winter, and both clubs will work closely together on his cricketing development.

He is one of the best fielders in the world, and his energy and athletic nature have had a positive effect on the entire squad.
