Mark Butcher, the Surrey captain, is out of action for a month after undergoing knee surgery on Monday. Mark Ramprakash will lead the side in his absence.

"After the operation today, I'll be doing everything in my power to get back as quickly as I can. But the guys will be in good hands under Ramps," Butcher told the Surrey website.

The problem flared up during the Championship match against Somerset at Whitgift school when Butcher required a runner in the second innings.
