Sussex sign two young players and keep Smith

Posted on 10/03/2007 in Sussex

Sussex have extended Tom Smith's contract for one year and have also signed two new young players, Ben Brown and Will Beer. All three players have come up through the ranks of the Sussex Academy.

Smith said: "I am delighted to be kept on at the club. I have had a fantastic first year and hope my career will flourish at Sussex."

Wicketkeeper Brown capped a week where he was named in the England Under-19 World Cup squad. He said: "I am thoroughly delighted to make the step up from the Academy and can't wait to get stuck in next season."

Beer, a talented leg-spin bowler, said: "Getting on to the staff at Sussex has always been my ultimate ambition and I am extremely delighted and excited at the prospect of the season of being part of a Championship winning team."

Mark Robinson, Sussex’s cricket manager said; "One of the best parts of the job is telling young players that they are going to be given a chance to join the professional ranks. To give the opportunity to three home grown players is especially pleasing.

“Tom has been a solid performer in the second team all year and needs to be given time to learn his trade, similarly to legspinner Will Beer. Ben comes from a long line of wicket-keeping talent at Sussex and like those who have gone before him, has enormous potential with the bat as well as the gloves.

“All three of these young players are at the beginning of their careers and everything lies in front of them which is exciting for them and for us."
