Free entry for village final at Lord's

Posted on 09/06/2007 in MCC

Woodhouse Grange from north Yorkshire and Findon from Sussex will meet in the national final of the npower Village Cup at Lord’s this Sunday, September 9.

Woodhouse overhauled Hathersage, from Derbyshire, by ten wickets to reach the final, while Findon beat Oxford Downs by 49 runs. More than 400 teams entered the competition, which is organised by The Wisden Cricketer.

This will be Woodhouse Grange’s third appearance in the final, following success against Tiddington in 1995 and a loss to Linton Park in 1999. But it will be a new experience for Findon.

Both teams will benefit from the experience and insight of former England stars Andrew Caddick and Ronnie Irani who will be on hand as npower ambassadors.

Another new feature of this year’s final will be the awarding of a Man-of-the-Match trophy for the first time in the competition’s 36 years. The award has been inaugurated to celebrate the life and contribution of the late Ben Brocklehurst, the former Somerset player who founded and nurtured the competition as proprietor of The Cricketer magazine.

The 40-over final begins at 11.00 am and entry is free, courtesy of the MCC which has hosted the final since 1972.

Meanwhile, there's more Archers at Lord’s, as Neil Priscott reports:

MCC’s links to Archers will intensify this Sunday but it’s not what it might appear on the surface.

While MCC might have hosted a successful tri-nation archery tournament in August, and can look forward to hosting the Olympic Archery contest in 2012, this Sunday we won’t be seeing any bows and arrows at HQ.

This time, it’s the Archers radio drama that will be in town, recording scenes from the npower Village Final to air the same night (at 7pm).

The cast of actors – including MCC Member Charles Collingwood – will record scenes on a team coach, in amongst the crowd and in the Wisden Hospitality Box in the Tavern Stand. The premise is that the Archers’ village cricket team - Ambridge – entered the npower Village Cup but were knocked out before the final. The players decided that they would still make the trip to Lord’s anyway…

Listen out for a guest star appearance on the programme from a prominent former England captain. The show will go out on BBC Radio 4 at 7pm on Sunday 9 September and will be repeated in the omnibus edition the following Sunday at 10.45am.
