Andrew McGarry released by Essex

Posted on 09/12/2007 in Essex

Essex have announced they will not be offering a contract extension to Andrew McGarry, whose existing agreement finishes at the end of the 2007 season.

McGarry, 25, had his summer ruined by a long-term injury that forced him to endure a long spell on the sidelines. He suffered a hand injury while bowling during the LV County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in May having being re-engaged by the county on a one-year deal following a previous spell with the club from 1999 to 2003.

Essex Physio Mark Thomas explained: “Andrew sustained a multiple fracture to his right 5th metacarpal in his hand. This required surgery and internal fixation. As a result he has been unable to train or play since.”

“It’s very sad that he won’t be joining us on the full-time staff for next year,” said David East, the chief executive. “Andrew came in at a very difficult time for us when we had picked up some serious injuries and unfortunately then picked one up himself. We’ve had a long chat with Andrew and I’m sure he’ll be welcomed back during pre-season next year, so we’ll assess the situation then, but at the moment he won’t be on the full-time staff.”
