Durham honoured with civic receptions

Durham CCC will be honoured with civic receptions by Chester-le-Street District Council and Durham County Council on Monday 1 October.

The club, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary, is being honoured following the team..s most successful season yet which includes winning their first piece of silverware after beating Hampshire in the Friends Provident Trophy Final at Lord..s in August, and their promotion to Division 1 in the Pro40 as Champions.

The schedule is as follows:

1.00pm Party arrive at the Civic Heart, Chester le Street

1.45pm Party departs
2.15pm Party arrives at County Hall, County Durham

Adnan released by Derbyshire

Hassan Adnan, the Derbyshire batsman, was not offered a new contract and has left the club after five seasons.

Adnan, 33, played 65 first-class matches for the club scoring 3678 runs at 35.36. He never matched the prolific form he showed in 2004 when, in his second season, he scored 1380 runs at 51.11. In 2007, he averaged just 21 in 11 matches.

..It is never a nice time informing players that they have to go," John Morris, Derbyshire's director of cricket said, "especially when it is such a loyal servant and great team man as Hassan has been to Derbyshire."

Mitchell extends Worcestershire contract

Daryl Mitchell has extended his contract with Worcestershire. The one-year deal lasts until the end of the 2009 season.

Mitchell, an allrounder, averaged 43 in the Championship this season. "I am a Worcestershire lad and I want to play for the club for many years to come," he said. "I feel the way I performed in the last few games that I have established myself at the top of the order."

Hampshire retain out-of-contract players

Hampshire have offered new deals to all five of their out-of-contract players.

Billy Taylor, who didn't appear in the Championship in 2007, has been offered a one-day contract only. Greg Lamb and Tom Burrows have been retained - as have David Balcombe and David Griffiths, the two young fast bowlers.

MCC Young Cricketers snapped up

Joel Pope, a wicket-keeper batsman on the MCC Young Cricketers.. books, has signed a two-year professional contract with Leicestershire CCC. He will now compete for a place in the county..s team with Paul Nixon.

Two team-mates have also earned county contracts. Alex Hales, a tall right-hand opening batsman has signed a two-year deal with Nottinghamshire, while Andy Sutton, a right-arm fast bowler, has been signed by Somerset.

Leicestershire also signed England Under-19 batsman James Taylor. The
17-year-old previously played for Worcestershire's academy and second XI and
appeared in this season's Minor Counties Championship for Shropshire.

Gareth Andrew has joined Worcestershire from Somerset on a two-year contract. Andrew, the 24-year-old medium fast bowler, found only limited first-team opportunities at Somerset .. while he expects to have more chances at Worcestershire.

Clare earns one-year contract

Jonathan Clare has earned a one-year contract with Derbyshire. Clare, a seaming allrounder, burst onto the scene with a five-wicket haul on his first-class debut and he has continued to impress in subsequent one-day matches since.

Few will mourns Greatbatch's going

Mark Greatbatch..s time at Warwickshire has been far from happy, and with his contract about to be ended with a year to run, it would be easy to dismiss his departure as just another example of someone jettisoned because of the failure of his team.

But George Dobell of the Birmingham Post has followed his two years as coach closely, and he reports that this is no simple case of a county finding a scapegoat.

Dean signs new one-year deal

Derbyshire bowler Kevin Dean has signed a new one-year contract, committing him to the club until the end of 2009.

Dean, the 31-year-old left-arm seamer, boasts a first-class record with 387 wickets at an average of 26.37 and this season he has taken 23 wickets in ten matches at an average of 28.65.

Stayt awarded two-year contract with Gloucestershire

Gloucestershire have awarded Tom Stayt a two-year contract.

A seam bowler, Stayt comes from Wiltshire and has played for Bath CC. He spent four years in the Gloucestershire academy, as well as studying accounting and finance at Exeter University.

He made his debut in the Championship against Middlesex at Lord's in August, taking 3 for 57 including the wickets of Andrew Strauss and Ed Smith.

Stayt said: ..I..m really pleased. It is a great opportunity to take the next step and try and cement my place in the Gloucestershire first team."

Essex retain Floodlit Cup

Essex beat the PCA Masters by four wickets at Chelmsford on Thursday to win the Twenty20 Floodlit Cup.

Having already won their first three matches in the round-robin competition, also featuring Derbyshire, the Eagles went into their final match with the knowledge that another win would secure the Cup for the second year in a row.


Their opponents pushed them hard and it was only a late flurry from James Foster (65*) that ensured Essex reached their target of 157 with one ball to spare.

The Masters produced an innings that gathered momentum, after winning the toss, with four batsmen reaching 20. Azhar Mahmood top-scored with 36 off 23 balls, including a savage pull through midwicket off Ryan ten Doeschate for six to bring up the 100.

Essex beat a PCA Masters XI in the first of two Floodlit Cup matches in three days at Chelmsford.

James Foster..s 47 formed the basis of Essex..s 161 for 7 and although Nick Knight and Andy Flower gave the PCA Masters a solid start they were unable to press on and only managed to reach 143 for 6. James Middlebrook took 3 for 18 off his four overs.

Kent appoint new academy director

Kent have appointed Phil Relf as their new academy director, replacing Paul Farbrace who recently became Sri Lanka's assistant coach. Relf is currently a National Coach Development Manager with the ECB. He has already spent considerable time with Kent through his involvement with county age group cricket.

Graham Ford, Kent's director of cricket, said: ..I am delighted that Phil will be joining us. He has a detailed knowledge of cricket in Kent and also has extensive coaching experience. We are confident he will carry this forward in getting the best out of the talent available within our academy..

Relf added: ..I am really excited about this new opportunity. Simon Willis and Paul Farbrace have laid a firm foundation for the Kent Academy and I am very much looking forward to taking the project on to the next stage.. He takes up the new role on 15 October.

Shantry and Barnes released by Warwickshire

The club's chief executive Colin Povey said: ..It is always a tough call to release players at the end of the season. I wish the guys the best for their future careers and welcome them to Edgbaston at any time in the future..

Adil Rashid named Young Cricketer of the Year

Yorkshire legspinner Adil Rashid has been named the Cricket Writers' Club 2007 Young Cricketer of the Year.

"A lot of young players make a golden start to their careers without being able to sustain it but Adil has done so and I am delighted with his progress so far,. Martin Moxon, Yorkshire..s director of cricket, said. "If he can go on learning and improving we are going to have a seriously good cricketer on our hands."

Free entry for village final at Lord's

Woodhouse Grange from north Yorkshire and Findon from Sussex will meet in the national final of the npower Village Cup at Lord..s this Sunday, September 9.

Woodhouse overhauled Hathersage, from Derbyshire, by ten wickets to reach the final, while Findon beat Oxford Downs by 49 runs. More than 400 teams entered the competition, which is organised by The Wisden Cricketer.

Crawley awarded benefit

John Crawley has been awarded a benefit by Hampshire for 2008, which will be his seventh season with the club since his move from Lancashire.

..It..s a great privilege and honour to be awarded my benefit year by the members and supporters at Hampshire," said Crawley. "I..d like to thank them for the opportunity and their support over my career at Hampshire."


Paul Terry, the team manager, added: ..It..s a fitting tribute to a player that was originally capped by Lancashire in 1994 and since his move to Hampshire has continued to entertain cricket supporters around the country with his fantastic style and grace of play..

Horton and Newby sign new deals

Paul Horton and Oliver Newby, two of Lancashire..s most promising young players, have signed contract extensions to keep them at Old Trafford until 2009.

The club acted swiftly to retain Horton, who has scored three Championship centuries this season, after Warwickshire showed strong interest in wanting to sign him.

Newby, a tall quick bowler, has had limited opportunities but Lancashire expect him to develop into a vital part of their attack when the aging members of the team .. Glen Chapple and Dominic Cork .. eventually step aside.

Glamorgan opens its doors to Aussies

Glamorgan..s Sophia Gardens have been chosen to be the Wallaby Embassy during this year's rugby World Cup.

The Australia-Wales Pool Match on September 15 is set to be the most important match for both teams in the competition, so the cricket club are hoping the Wallaby Embassy - located in the National Cricket Centre - will be a popular event.

The Wallaby Embassy is free to attend, with doors open to all from 11am until 11pm. Visitors can watch the game on large viewing screens inside the cricket centre, while music will be provided by an Australian guitarist and a special Welsh guest singer.

Gooch set to invest in Essex

Graham Gooch is set to invest £90,000 in Essex over the next three years. Gooch has announced that he will sponsor the Essex Cricket Academy, and will write a cheque for £30,000 for the first year, a figure which will then be reviewed.

..With the money raised on my successful World Cup cruise in February I have been looking to support the future of Essex cricket in an enhanced way,. Gooch told the Essex CCC website. ..The academy is the first place where future talents are unearthed. I see academy players taking their first step towards professional cricket when they are selected to go on it.

..I see this as being my way of putting something back into the game and of making a difference..

Thinking caps on in Essex

Whether you only shout the answers at the TV when 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' is on or have won the final of Mastermind, Essex's Graham Napier is after your brain power for a fundraiser quiz night.

It's on Thursday 20 September at Essex's County ground, from 7.30, after the Championship game with Middlesex. Teams of between 4 and 8, and the price is £20 per person.

This includes a buffet dinner, while on each table there will be at least two bottles of wine and a mixture of beer and lager.

Botha signs for Warwickshire

Ant Botha has signed a two-year contract with Warwickshire after turning down an extension with Derbyshire.

"It has been a very difficult decision," Botha said. "At this stage of my career, I feel this is the right move for me and an exciting opportunity that I might not get again."

John Morris, Derbyshire's director of cricket, admitted he was "very disappointed" to lose Botha mid-season but stressed it would give him a chance to "assess players in the remaining matches this year who are going to be a part of Derbyshire's future".
