Counties continue to out-class universities

Posted on 04/15/2007 in Universities

Nottinghamshire made a better fist of their second innings against Durham UCCE. After being rolled for 183 in Durham, Notts began to exact some kind of revenge, skittling Durham for 142 and eking out a lead of more than 300 by the close.

There may be much tutting about mismatches at the World Cup; on this side of the Atlantic Northamptonshire had their own version, absolutely crushing Cambridge UCCE by a thumping innings and 329 runs at Fenners. Gareth James struck Cambridgeâ..s only fifty in either innings, while Robert White became Northantsâ.. third centurion.

Middlesex continued to dominate Oxford at The Parks, building on their first-innings lead of 200 to take firm control of the match, their new signing Tim Murtagh (39) the only faller in the second innings before stumps.

Somerset left Loughborough UCCE the small target of 555 after declaring on 214 for 6 at Taunton. Marcus Trescothick, who was bowled for 28 first up, didnâ..t bat in the second innings.

Hampshire tinkered with their order second time around, but they were just as effective, batting Cardiff UCCE well out of the match at The Rose Bowl after skittling them for 120. Nic Pothas opened, and struck a century, and there were fifties for Sean Ervine and Michael Lumb.

Surrey continued to make hay against Bradford/Leeds UCCE at The Oval, with a lead in excess of 350 heading into the final day. Mark Ramprakash, who only reached 26 first up, made an unbeaten fifty, while Rikki Clarke made his second fifty in two days.
