Gloucestershire forced to move fixture
Posted on 05/25/2006 in Gloucestershire
Due to recent heavy rain Gloucestershire have been forced to relocate their fixture against Worcestershire at the King's School ground in Gloucester, starting on June 2nd, to Bristol. It is the first time the club has been forced into this position and Peter Lacey, the Headmaster, said: “It is particularly galling that this has happened this year when the fixture is against our nearest neighbour Worcestershire. It was all set to be a local derby and a great crowd puller.”
Tom Richardson, the Gloucestershire chief executive, said; "We are committed to taking the show on the road and whilst Archdeacon Meadow is a really good location, nevertheless it is an out ground and does not have the facilities of Bristol to cope with such extreme conditions. Given the amount of rain that is forecast and the current waterlogged state of ground, there is no alternative. This is a great shame for the school, the sponsors, the city council and all our members and fans in the area."

Eoin Morgan won’t be playing for Ireland against his employers, Middlesex, but joins the squad for the Bank Holiday Monday match away in Kent.

For the second season running Glamorgan's first floodlit fixture of the season fell victim to the weather. No play was possible in the C&G clash against Middlesex at Sophia Gardens, with each side taking one point. Glamorgan will hope for better luck when they host their floodlit Twenty20 matches at the end of June.
Denly enjoys workout
Posted on 05/20/2006 in Kent
Joe Denly certainly made good use of Kent's fixture against Cambridge UCCE at Fenners, striking two centuries in the match. Denly, 26, who is not yet a regular in Kent's first team, reached his maiden first-class century in the first innings and followed that with an unbeaten 107 in his second knock. For good measure he also bagged three wickets in the match.

Fax and fitness
Posted on 05/15/2006 in Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire coach Kepler Wessels said he was not concerned that Usman Afzaal missed most of pre-season training and all friendlies. Afzaal has been the most consistent batsman in the past two years, averaging 52 in the Championship, but is a celebrity in India, being
engaged to the Bollywood actress Amrita Arora, and was commentating on England’s one-day series before arriving on April 12, a month after most of the squad.
Wessels, who commentates for South African TV, said: “We have been monitoring his fitness.” In other words Afzaal faxed over his results after taking the club’s fitness tests. With no practice in the middle he made 5 and 28 in the opening Championship draw with Essex. Ashley Potter, The Wisden Cricketer
Young guns sent packing
Posted on 05/15/2006 in Hampshire
While on the field most county's have shown that they have an active youth policy, it seems that in Hampshire's case that doesn't extend beyond the boundary. When Vic Isaacs stood down as the county's scorer at the end of last season aged 61, young blood might have been expected to replace him. Instead, step up 81-year-old Tony Weld, a former newsagent.
Shaun Udal - Hampshire and Ireland?
Posted on 05/15/2006 in Hampshire
Shaun Udal has revealed that he almost swapped allegiances to Ireland
before he got a belated chance to resume his international career with England. Udal thought his England days were over so last summer sent an email to the Irish to see if he could play for them in the 2007 World Cup. Udal’s mother Mary is from near Dublin, so qualification would not have been a problem. But the Irish did not respond and then came the call to go to Pakistan with England. Talk about luck of the Irish. The Wisden Cricketer

Time for a tune
Posted on 05/12/2006 in Kent
What do you need when you’re languishing mid-table in the Championship? Well, if you’re Kent, a rousing tune wouldn’t go amiss. Handy, then, that they’ve just come up with their own song - This is Our Time. ( more details here) Other cricketers may fancy themselves as singers – Mark Butcher, Andrew Flintoff and Darren Gough for example – but Kent is the first club to release its very own club song.
David Fulton, Martin Saggers, Niall O’Brien, Simon Cusden, Matt Dennington and Neil Dexter have all been roped into, er, lent their vocal talents to the production. But only time will tell if it really is Kent’s time…

Franklin pulls out of deal
Posted on 05/09/2006 in Glamorgan
Glamorgan have had a nightmare as far as overseas players goes this season and it continues to get worse. James Franklin, the New Zealand left-arm seamer, has pulled out of his deal after injuring his knee on the recent tour of South Africa.
They lost Matthew Elliott (knee) and Michael Kasprowicz (Australia recall) just before the season started and signed Mark Cosgrove as one replacment. Franklin would have bolstered the attack but a scan confirming a cartilage tear. He hadn't signed his contract with Glamorgan so the club are free to look for a replacement.
Patel out for a fortnight

Min Patel will be out of action for two weeks after aggravating a groin injury in last week's Championship game against Lancashire.
"Groins, I'm told, are notoriously bad for never going away," Patel said. "It's something I've had for a couple of years. It disappears for months on end and reappears out of nowhere."

Reddish and Ealham leads the way
Posted on 05/08/2006 in Universities
Sam Reddish, the 18-year-old Bradford/Leeds UCCE opening batsman heads the leader board for the new Walter Lawrence Trophy award, made to the highest-scoring batsman from the six MCC Universities.
Reddish, who hails from Solihull, scored 148, including 28 fours and 2 sixes, in his side’s second innings against Worcestershire at Harrogate on May 5, to record the highest score in an innings, played against one of the other five University Centres of Cricketing Excellence or against one of the first-class counties, so far this season. The winner will receive a silver medallion and prize of £1,000 at the end-of-season dinner when the main trophy, for the fastest first-class hundred in terms of balls faced, is presented.
Nottinghamshire all-rounder, Mark Ealham, still leads the way in the Walter Lawrence Trophy with his virtually unassailable 45-ball hundred made against MCC at Lord’s on April 16.
Yorkshire cut OAP admission prices
Posted on 05/08/2006 in Yorkshire
Yorkshire have announced that they are dropping admission prices for senior citizens from £15 to £10 per day with effect from the next home game, Yorkshire v Lancashire in the County Championship.
The decision was taken following a series of complaints from pensioners who have attended matches at Headingley in recent weeks. Last season, pensioners paid just £6 on the gate to watch the county. However, because the club do not currently offer any concession to retired supporters who become full members of the club, it was decided to also scrap the reduction on the gate for pensioners resulting in an increase from £6 to £15 per game.
“I have acknowledged that the club were wrong to levy such a large increase on such an important group of supporters at a time when we are keen to attract more people into our stadium,” Stewart Regan, the county’s CEO. “In my experience, both in business and in sport, pensioners are always given a concession and as such, we must come into line. Given our current financial position, however, we cannot hold the prices at last year’s level. I have therefore agreed with the board that we will reduce prices to £10 per day for pensioners paying on the gate.”

Reddish goes downing fighting
Posted on 05/06/2006 in Universities
Even though Bradford/Leeds UCCE fell to another heavy defeat - 250 runs against Worcestershire - Sam Reddish, an 18-year-old batsman from Solihull, will remember the final day. He smashed 148 off 178 balls with 28 fours and two sixes against an attacking including the England internationals Kabir Ali and Gareth Batty. Sadly for Reddish the game wasn't a first-class fixture, but although the records won't show his innings he'll certainly not forget it.
The oldest man in Britain visits the Oval
Posted on 05/06/2006 in Surrey
Some may have thought there were three centurions at The Oval for Surrey’s rout of Gloucestershire. There were actually four. Alongside Phil Weston, Mark Ramprakash and James Benning was Henry Allingham who, at 109 years of age, is the oldest man in Britain. And, fittingly, it is exactly 100 years since Mr Allingham last visited the ground – and watched WG Grace play for the Gentlemen against the Players.

However Mark Chilton, Lancashire's captain, is hopeful that he will be fit for the next Championship match, starting on Wednesday, against Kent at Old Trafford.
Minor hamstring injury for Gough
Posted on 05/01/2006 in Essex
Darren Gough picked up a hamstring injury during Monday's C & G Trophy match against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl after running into the umpire's arm. He had begun the game in impressive style but was forced to leave the field after recording figures of 2.2-1-4-2.
The Essex physio, Mark Thomas, issued said: "Gough has a very mild grade 1 strain of his right femoris [one of his hamstrings]. He sustained the injury during his third over when the umpire put his arm up to halt his run-up, causing Darren to run into the umpire's arm - throwing him off balance in the process.
"We will not be taking any chances with the injury so it is likely - as a precaution - that he will not be playing in our next Championship match against Leicestershire."
