Porterfield extends contract

Will Porterfield, the Ireland left-hander, has signed a new two-year deal with Gloucestershire.

In 12 Championship matches in 2008 he scored 718 runs at 32.68 with a top score of 93.

..I am really pleased to be offered an extra two years at Gloucestershire." he said. I am looking forward to building on what has been a good first season for me. This is where my future lies and I hope the next two years will be successful for both me and the club.

White to captain second XI

Craig White has signed a one-year contract to captain Yorkshire's 2nd XI next season. White first played for the club in 1990, but has drifted out of first-team action recently.

"I enjoyed looking after the 2nds this season tremendously and I think they need a senior figure to learn from, support them and help them along the way," he said. "I am really looking forward to continuing in that role next year."

Ben Smith awarded benefit

Worcestershire batsman Ben Smith has been awarded a benefit season in 2009. He joined from Leicestershire in 2002 and has been a consistent scorer in all forms of the game.

"Once we had received the request from some Members to consider awarding Ben a benefit year, it took no time at all to agree," said chief executive Mark Newton. "Ben is a wonderful professional cricketer who is still at the top of his game. He has just signed for a further two years and we hope our members and supporters will help Ben make a success of the year."

Smith added: "I have had some brilliant times and have thoroughly enjoyed making contributions to the team on and off the field. I now look forward to an exciting year ahead based around The Ashes and the World Twenty20 whilst aiming for more successes with the team and club."

Ten Lancashire players sign deals

Ten Lancashire players have agreed new deals with the club the day after they were relegated in the Pro40.

Those extending their stays include Tom Smith, Kyle Hogg, Gareth Cross and Steven Croft.

..We have high hopes for all ten players, as they will form the backbone of our senior squad in the years ahead," said manager Mike Watkinson.

..Despite four no results, a number of our younger players have had opportunities in this year..s Pro40 campaign. It has been very encouraging to see the energy, talent and commitment demonstrated by these players, and it bodes well for the future of Lancashire..

Lamb and Latouf released

Greg Lamb, the offspinning allrounder, and batsman Kevin Latouf have been released by Hampshire.

Lamb began the season as the main spinner, but struggled to fill the gap left by Shane Warne and Shaun Udal before being dropped in favour of Imran Tahir and Liam Dawson.

Latouf has been on a trial at Warwickshire during the season after failing to find a first-team place.

Logan 'disappointed' at release

Richard Logan has said he is 'disappointed' at being released by Northamptonshire with immediate effect.

Logan has spent two seasons at Northamptonshire during his second stint with the club and found it difficult to maintain a regular place in the side.

..After 12 years in the professional game I am disappointed that things have not worked out as well as I would have liked," he said. "However, I..m excited about new challenges that lie ahead in my life either inside or outside of the game..

Coach David Capel said: ..It was a difficult decision to release Richard from his contract and we have done it with the future in mind. It is disappointing from the players point of view that it has not worked out but I sincerely wish him all the best for his future..


The club have also released 20-year-old seam bowler Richard Browning. he was on a summer contract after having spent the first of his two years at the club on the full-time staff.

Saxelby secures Gloucestershire deal

Ian Saxelby, the 19-year-old quick bowler, has signed a three-year deal with Gloucestershire after impressing during a trial.

..Having watched a lot of young bowlers at many levels around the country this season, he is undoubtedly the pick of the bunch," said club mentor Jack Russell.

Essex sign Maunders

Essex have registered former Leicestershire batsman John Maunders for the remainder of the season.

He has featured in Essex..s 2nd XI, averaging 53.50 in the Championship and 47.50 in the Second Eleven Trophy.

Former West Indian batsman Wavell Hinds has signed a new contract with Derbyshire which keeps him at the county as a Kolpak player in 2009 with an option to extend it to 2010. Hinds joined Derbyshire in June and has since made six half-centuries and taken 17 wickets in all competitions.

Ervine commits to Hampshire and England

Specialist fielding role for Smith

Ben Smith has extended his contract with Worcestershire by two years, and has also taken on a role as specialist fielding coach.

"We are delighted that Ben has agreed to extend his playing contract for a further two years. He is the ultimate professional in terms of attitude, work ethic and performance," Steve Rhodes, the club's director of cricket, said. "These qualities rub off on other players which means he plays a key role on and off the field. Whilst his cricket will remain a priority, we want our younger players to benefit from his skills hence the offer of the full time post as a specialist fielding coach."

Smith added: "This is an important opportunity as it allows me to continue playing for Worcestershire which is of paramount importance to me but also enables me to start developing a future career in cricket. Since joining the county in 2002, I have seen the team develop a blend of youth and experience which augurs well for the next few years and I really look forward to being an integral part of what we all believe will be great success on the field."

Lucas extends contract

David Lucas, the left-arm seamer, has signed a two-year extension to his Northamptonshire contract, keeping him at the club until 2010.

He has had a solid 2008 with 34 wickets - the best haul of his career - at 28.44 in the Championship.

..David has bowled consistently well this season, especially in [the] Championship," said chief executive Mark Tagg. "Since he joined Northamptonshire we have seen steady improvement and we look forward to David maturing into a top quality bowler over the next two seasons..

"I have enjoyed my time since I joined in 2007 on a three month trial, and for the club to offer me a two year contract shows that they have faith in me," Lucas said.

Moore reveals England dream

du Plessis signs new three-year deal

Francois du Plessis has extended his current Lancashire contract for three years which will keep him at the county until 2011 subject to work permit and registration. Du Plessis will continue to play for South African side Nashua Titans in their domestic competitions during the English winter, and both clubs will work closely together on his cricketing development.

Kirby stays at Gloucestershire

Steve Kirby is the latest Gloucestershire player to secure his future with the club after signing a new contract. It follows in the footsteps of Alex Gidman, who agreed a three-year deal yesterday.

A number of counties have been interested in signing Kirby, but now he..ll be staying at Bristol when John Bracewell takes charge again next season.

..This has not been any easy decision. In fact, it is the toughest decision of my life. A major factor has been my family. They are very settled in Bristol and Gloucestershire are a strong family unit and look after them very well.

..The other massive factor has been the appointment of John Bracewell as director of cricket. I am really looking forward to working with him. I am still massively ambitious to play for England and I do feel he can help me continue to improve..

Nottinghamshire have released Gareth Clough after nine seasons at the club. Clough will focus on studying a degree in sports and exercise science and said he would be keeping his options open as to the future.

Thomas stays with Somerset

Alfonso Thomas, the former South Africa quick bowler, has signed a new one-year contract with Somerset for 2009.

Thomas is a Kolpak player and has impressed during this season..s Twenty20 Cup with 11 wickets.

"I am delighted to announce that Alfonso will be staying with Somerset next season,. director of cricket, Brian Rose, told the Somerset website. "He has shown himself to be a class act in Twenty20 cricket, He swings the ball and bowls with a lot of intelligence.

Tom Smith gets Leicestershire loan spell

Tom Smith, the Lancashire allrounder, has joined Leicestershire on a month-long loan spell.

With Lancashire having a full complement of fast bowlers available .. including Andrew Flintoff .. Smith..s first-team chances would have been limited at Old Trafford, so the loan provides him with the chance to getting some competitive cricket.

Smith goes straight into Leicestershire..s squad for their County Championship match against Worcestershire at Grace Road starting on Sunday.

Lancashire cricket manager Mike Watkinson said: "Tom has recently missed seven weeks of cricket due to a thigh injury. This loan spell is a great opportunity for him to get some regular first team experience on his return to action."

The loan agreement allows Smith to be recalled if required by Lancashire.

Gloucestershire sign Harris on loan

Andy Harris, the Nottinghamshire quick bowler, has joined Gloucestershire on a loan deal. He hasn't been able to force his way into the first team at Trent Bridge and Jon Lewis, the Gloucestershire captain, was looking to bolster his seam attack.

..At present our results are not going as planned, I feel that our seam bowlers have been under performing and need some more experience to help with the workload of the season," said Lewis. "A fresh face will help to give us some impetuous for the rest of the season.

"Harris is an experienced fast bowler with a good record and knowledge of winning competitions and I hope that he will enjoy his time here at Gloucestershire..

The county are hoping to sign another loan player in the next few days.

Butcher out for a month

Mark Butcher, the Surrey captain, is out of action for a month after undergoing knee surgery on Monday. Mark Ramprakash will lead the side in his absence.

"After the operation today, I'll be doing everything in my power to get back as quickly as I can. But the guys will be in good hands under Ramps," Butcher told the Surrey website.

The problem flared up during the Championship match against Somerset at Whitgift school when Butcher required a runner in the second innings.

Gidman a wanted man

Alex Gidman is set to decide in the near future whether he will remain with Gloucestershire after his current deal expires at the end of the season.

Warwickshire and Surrey have both made 28-day approaches to speak to Gidman, but Gloucestershire are still trying to persuade him to stay at Bristol.

However, Gidman has hinted that it may be time to move as he tries to push for an England place after appearing for the Lions over the last couple of years. Warwickshire appears to be his favourite option so that he could team up with Allan Donald.

"My bowling has been my biggest weakness and Donald is the kind of guy who could help me," he told the Bristol Evening Post. "I want to give myself the best chance of playing for my country and Ashley Giles has been a big part of the England set up."

Steve Kirby is also attracting interest from Warwickshire who want to strengthen their quick-bowling line-up

Middlesex sign Simpson

John Simpson has signed a professional contract with Middlesex for the remainder of 2008 and 2009. An MCC Young Cricketer, he has turned out for Middlesex 2nd XI this summer, and in previous years has represented Lancashire and Nottinghamshire.

Saggers denied all ten

Martin Saggers, the Kent and former England bowler, was denied the chance to take all 10 wickets in an innings for Kent 2nd XI.

Their match against Yorkshire at Beckenham was abandoned so the Friends Provident Trophy quarter-final between Kent and Somerset could take place, after being moved from Canterbury. Saggers had 9 for 60 when the game was stopped at lunch on the second day after taking four on a shortened first day and another five on the second.

Middlesex members move against committee

One hundred and eighty Middlesex members have signed a petition expressing no confidence in the committee and demanding a special meeting. The county, without silverware in more than a decade, has made a disappointing start to the summer and only their win against Derbyshire on Monday lifted them off the bottom of Division two of the Championship.

The Middlesex committee met on Monday night, and Vinny Coddrington, the CEO, told The Times: ..These members are entitled to their opinion and I think there should be an open forum..

Hayward signs for Hampshire

Hampshire have signed 31-year-old former South African pace bowler,
Nantie Hayward for the remainder of the season.

Hayward played the last of his 16 Tests in 2004 against Sri Lanka. In 2007 he played in the Friends Provident Trophy for Ireland as one of their two overseas players. His previous experience of county cricket comes from his time playing for Middlesex in 2005 and a stint with Worcestershire in 2003.

Afzaal punished for dissent

The ECB has confirmed that Surrey cricketer, Usman Afzaal, has received three penalty points under its discipline code following an incident during Surrey..s County Championship match against Yorkshire on May 21 to 24, 2008.

Afzaal was reported by umpires Nigel Cowley and Graham Burgess for a Level Two breach of the code (showing serious dissent at an umpire..s decision by word or action). The penalty points remain on Afzaal..s record for a period of two years. The accumulation of nine or more penalty points in any two-year period will result in an automatic suspension.

Famous names set for The Oval

A host of famous names will appear at The Oval on June 8 as the PCA Masters take on a team of Barbados greats.

The match will features former Barbados players Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Vasbert Drakes and Sherwin Campbell and will help to promote Barbados in the run up to England's tour of the West Indies early next year.

Shreck signs Notts extension

Charlie Shreck has signed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at Nottinghamshire until 2010.

Shreck, who was part of the England Lions squad in India during the winter, has started the season well with 16 wickets at 27.06 including a match-winning five-wicket haul against Lancashire.

..Charlie has been the mainstay of our bowling attack for five years and I am delighted that he has chosen to commit his future to the club,. said director of cricket Mick Newell. ..I know that his inclusion in the England squad has been discussed very seriously and the opportunity may come his way but his priority is to do well for Nottinghamshire.
