Scotland gain entry to 2009 World Twenty20
Posted
1 day, 14 hours ago in Scotland
Scotland have replaced Zimbabwe in next year's ICC World Twenty20. During the ICC's annual conference week Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) officials had said they were willing to pull out of the event, but chairman Peter Chingoka was sent back to Dubai to discuss further details of the agreement. He met with ICC president David Morgan, vice president Sharad Pawar and chief executive Haroon Lorgat.
The decision has been taken as a one-off with ZC recognising that the UK Government would be unlikely to issue visas for the team given that they had already cancelled the planned bilateral series next May.

US Juniors begin tour of England
Posted
1 week, 1 day ago in USA
The itinerary for the international Tour of the Under-17 USA team to England has been finalized at last, and the tour will begin on August 14, 2008. The USA Team will be playing four 40-over and two 20-over matches during their visit.
Unfortunately, it proved to be impossible to schedule any matches with an English Under-15 team because of their already pre-arranged schedule, Hopefully, this will happen in 2009 and beyond, as the idea of U-15 cricket gets more established in world cricket circles.
The USA team contains several players who have already proved themselves in international competition. Among them are Akash Jaganathan, Jason Fox, who is an accomplished batsman, bowler, and keeper from Kansas; Pranay Suri, who captained the Western region team which won the US National championship.and who also performed extremely well in the recently concluded Americas U-15 championship in Bermuda.
Other squad members include: Vinay Suri, an opening bowler who is also a top-order batsman on the winning squad in the US U19 national tournament; Alok Mehta, a bowler who won the Man-of-the-Match award during the recently concluded US Junior National tournament in California; Adhiraj Watave, a talented all-rounder who is the youngest player on the team; Deep Sathe, a legspin bowler who has taken five wickets a few times in youth games and is also extremely strong batsman with the bat.
Chanakya Lokam is an opening batsman who played in the U15 Nationals and has been training in India. Gaurav Ambekar is a combative batsman who punishes the ball often; and Navneet Wariach is a consistent offspin bowler and a utility batsman. All in all, this is a team with all the skills and experience that has earned top honours for USA junior squads for the past three years in international matches, and it is expected to prove as much in its tour of England. The team arrives on August 14 in England, and returns to the USA on August 23.

Scotland impress before the rain
Posted
1 week, 2 days ago in Scotland
The weather hasn't been kind to Associate cricket over the past week, and that drizzly trend continued at Ayr where Scotland's first ODI against Kenya was washed out.
In the play that was possible, Kenya struggled to 141 for 8 in 35 overs. Dewald Nel and John Blain each took two wickets as Kenya's fragile top-order failed to deliver, slipping to 32 for 3 when Steve Tikolo was caught behind for 2. However, Thomas Odoyo smashed four sixes in a brief 45 from 39 balls to loft Kenya's score towards something resembling respectable, before the rain fell once more.
Set 141 from a revised 35 overs, Scotland lost Gavin Hamilton for 9 but the rain again returned and the match was abandoned.
The second ODI at Ayr is scheduled for Wednesday, but the forecast is no more promising than today's.

Multimar Junior Winter Cup
Posted
1 week, 4 days ago in Argentina
The highlight of a quiet month for Argentina was the Third Multimar Junior Winter Cup which was played on the first weekend of July. The full details are from the ICC Americas Newsflash:
Unfortunately the weather once again played a major part as the day’s play was brought to an early end. The tournament was once again kindly hosted by St. George’s College. There were four teams from Lomas A.C, Belgrano A.C, St. Alban’s and St.George’s that took part in the event, with each team playing two matches.
All matches were based on 15 overs per side. It was encouraging to note the improvement of many of the players, thanks to these Winter Cups and the coaching clinics held over the past three months. Unfortunately the rain came towards the end of another successful day with both matches still to complete their final innings. The day was completed with some drinks and food for the kids and the group watching a DVD on international cricket. Once again, another successful day and looking good for a busy three months before the 2008/09 season kicks off.

Canada win Under-15 Americas Cricket Championship
Posted
1 week, 5 days ago in ICC Americas
Canada have won the Under-15 Americas Cricket Championship in Bermuda after completing the tournament with an unbeaten record.
Canada were run closest by Bermuda who reduced them to 85 for 6 chasing 168 in their penultimate match, but an unbeaten 44 from Bryan Henry ensured they squeezed home with three balls in hand.
“Grassroots development through talent identification and development programs instituted in the winter of 2007-2008, helped put together a strong team which has taken Canada to this pinnacle and promises to be an indicator of things to come for Canadian cricket,” Atul Ahuja, Cricket Canada’s chief executive, told Cricinfo.
“Cricket Canada has a stated goal to win the Under-19 World Cup that Canada will host in 2012. Many players that were part of the winning team today could well be part of that squad. Programs are being put in place to develop this talent pool to help Canada achieve this goal.”

Music concert leaves Ulster club homeless

The destroyed outfield at Dungannon Park

A club in Ulster have had their entire season wiped out because of a music festival which left their ground at Dungannon Park unusable.
Dungannon CC use a council-owned pitch, and last weekend the local authority agreed to the staging of UTV CountryFest, attracting almost 10,000 spectators. But heavy rain had left the outfield sodden, and lorries used to construct the various stages to host the bands churned up the outfield and left it an unusable mudbath.
The concert organisers did erect fencing round the square, but for access to the stage area they drove over the outfield. “It looks like a ploughed field with an oasis of the square in the middle,” a club official told Cricinfo. “It didn’t take a lot … a car would have done considerable damage but they were using lorries.”
Dungannon now face having to forfeit their remaining home games which will almost certainly mean them being relegated from the Northern Cricket Union league. More worrying is that the outfield is in such a bad state that it needs leveling and then reseeding. Club officials fear that even if this work is undertaken now the ground might still not be ready for the start of next season.
Dungannon is a close-knit club and hope that they will not lose players because of their inability to play at home, but it has tarnished their 60th anniversary celebrations.
Dungannon Council said that all remedial work to the area was part of the contract with the organisers of CountryFest and that they would endeavour "to ensure that this work is carried out as swiftly and efficiently as possible".

Kenya's new coach faces first test
Posted
2 weeks, 6 days ago in Kenya
Ahead of the World Twenty20 Qualifiers, Will Luke met Kenya's new coach, Andy Kirsten:
The venue is Cranleigh School, the occasion a warm-up for Kenya's cricketers ahead of the World Twenty20 Qualifier in Belfast. Nestled on the Surrey-Sussex border, surrounded by acres of high-quality pitches and the best equipment, it is a far cry from the makeshift and often decrepit facilities that Nairobi offer. An idyll, belying the pressure on Kenya and their new coach, Andy Kirsten.
We meet under the pavilion canopy with Kenya batting against a side led by Abeed Janmohamed, himself a former pupil of the school and Kenyan wicketkeeper. As Kenya's batsmen come and go with worrying frequency, Kirsten casts his eye around the manicured lawns and professionally prepared squares. "This is unbelievable," he says, taking a moment away from scoring the match on his laptop. "In Kenya, it's not a rich cricketing nation in terms of what's available, but we have to make the best of what little is available. For example when we come here and see this magnificent structure for nets, we don't have that. Every time we want a net, it's a manual operation for a couple of guys to erect some nets with old wooden poles. There's nothing permanent. There's always a procedure to be done."

Ahsan stars in astonishing Kuwait win
Posted
3 weeks, 4 days ago in Kuwait
Kuwait's No. 9, Mohammad Ahsan, scored an unbeaten 91 and added 96 runs with last man Saad Khaliq, who stuck it out for 32 balls to score a run, to take them to an astonishing one-wicket win over Singapore at the Kinrara Academy Oval. Singapore had relied on half-centuries from Chetan Suryawanshi (65 off 68) and Monish Arora (62 off 124), and some generous bowling from Kuwait's bowlers, who conceded 32 extras, to post 237 for 9. Kuwait stuttered to 70 for 5, but a 64-run stand between Hisham Mirza (47) and Mohammad Javed kept them in the hunt. Singapore then grabbed four wickets for eight runs to leave then just a wicket away from victory. But the late-order heroics from Ahsan, who smashed seven sixes and eight fours, took Kuwait to an unlikely triumph.

Nepal brush past Qatar

Unbeaten half-centuries from Gyanendra Malla (76 not out) and Sharad Vesawkar (51 not out), and their 126-run stand, took Nepal to a comfortable seven-wicket win against Qatar at the Royal Military College ground. Choosing to bat, Qatar began slowly, making just 46 in the first 15 overs. Their captain, Omer Taj, made 48 off 77 balls, but did not receive much support from the middle order. Rusharat Ali, the wicketkeeper, struck an unbeaten 40 as Qatar were eventually bowled out for 171. Shakti Gauchan, a legspinner, and seamer Basata Negmi took three wickets each. A double-strike from Abbas Khan gave Nepal early jitters as they fell to 46 for 3, but Malla and Vesawkar combined to dash Qatar's hopes.

UAE overcome Afghanistan

UAE, led by a three-wicket haul from the legspinner Riaz Khaliq, bowled well to restrict Afghanistan to 214, a score they overhauled in 47.1 overs to register a three-wicket win at the Bayuemas Oval. Nowroz Mangal, the Afghanistan captain, led the way with a 67-ball 55, adding 74 runs for the first wicket with Karim Khan (33). Mohammad Nabi, the No. 5 batsman, also contributed with an aggressive 40. UAE suffered an early setback when they lost opener Mohammad Iqbal for 8, but Arshad Ali's patient 127-ball 62, and a 61-ball 42 from Khurram Khan put them on track for victory. With wickets falling regularly toward the end, Mohammad Tauqir blitzed five fours in an unbeaten 24 to finish off the match.

Bahrain trash Saudi Arabia
Posted
3 weeks, 4 days ago in Bahrain
Bahrain built on Azeem-ul-Haq's 79 and some telling contributions from the lower order to amass 335, before skittling out Saudi Arabia for just 137 in their crushing 198-run win at the Selangor Turf Club. Saudi Arabia's decision to field first seemed to have worked when Bahrain collapsed to 77 for 3, but Imran Sajjad blasted 62 off 54 balls to reclaim the initiative. Bahrain kept up a good run rate, but they had lost half their side by the 27th over with 159 runs on the board. Azeem partnered Tahir Dar (35) and Akmal Malik (23) take them past 300. Saudi Arabia were completely undone in their chase, with the only resistance coming from Suhrab Kilsingatakam, who made 52. The pick of the Bahrain bowlers were Halal Abbasi and Fahad Sadeq, who took three wickets apiece.

Ireland made it two wins out of two with a five-wicket success against Denmark at Rathmines. Captain William Porterfield hit a calm half-century, combining in a opening stand of 77 with Gary Wilson (32). There was a mini-wobble as three wickets went for 16, but Andrew White and Reinhardt Strydom ensured there was no major panic. Freddie Klokker had played a lone hand with 85 off 126 balls, and only one other Danish batsman reached double figures. Kevin O'Brien and Kyle McCallan did most of the damage as Ireland continue to look a tidy outfit.

Norway were then humbled for 104, as Netherlands registered a 370-run victory to bounce back from their shock loss to Italy. It was runs galore from the Dutch as Darren Reekers collected 196, adding 290 for the first wicket with Tim de Grooth. Unlike the opening day of matches, there were no surprises when Scotland beat Italy by six wickets at The Vineyard. Italy, who completed a shock eight-run win over Netherlands yesterday, slumped to 125 all out . They were in danger of being dismissed for under 100 when they were 87 for 9 until a last-wicket stand of 38 (the highest for the innings) between Vince Pennazza and Din Alaud gave them some respectability. Pennazza bagged Ryan Watson early in Scotland's chase but from then on the innings was a formality, with Scotland completing the job in 29 overs.

Saudi Arabia opened their Group A campaign in the Asian Cricket Council's Elite Trophy with a 29-run win over UAE at the Royal Military College. On being sent in, their openers had contrasting fortunes: Hammad Saeed was dismissed for a duck in the first over while Khalid Butt laced a 96-ball 110, featuring 14 fours and 5 sixes, to power Saudi Arabia to 228. Despite needing to chase a modest total, the UAE batsmen set off as if needing to overhaul a massive score. Manic cameos from Mohammad Iqbal (14 off 5), Amjad Ali (38 off 22) and Saqib Ali (48 off 42) kept the asking rate in check but wickets were falling with alarming frequency. UAE kept attacking to the end, being dismissed for 199 after facing just 30 overs.

The other major contributor was No. 3 Suhan Alagaratnam, who made a patient 46. Bahrain looked on target for a win as opener Imran Sajjad cracked five sixes and seven fours in a 53-ball 73 but were derailed by legspinner Dinesh Sockalingham's four wickets. Azis followed up his whirlwind batting effort with a tight spell of 10-0-28-1 as Malaysia completed a 33-run victory.

Nepal upset Hong Kong

Despite being sent in on a damp pitch at the Selangor Turf Club, Nepal trumped Hong Kong by 44 runs. Measured forties from Paresh Lohani and Sharad Vesawkar, and a more cavalier 81 from Paras Khadka lifted them to 245. They were helped along by a couple of dropped catches and an over-attacking field. Early blows from medium-pacer Binod Das left Hong Kong stuttering at 35 for 3. Their top scorer was Butt Hussain, who crawled to 52 off 123 balls, but with none of his team-mates crossing 25, Hong Kong slumped to a loss.

Qasim Sheikh hit an unbeaten 80 to guide Scotland to a comfortable six-wicket victory over Denmark at Malahide. Scotland's target was adjusted under the D/L method as rain interrupted the chase after 28 overs, but they were well on course at 151 for 3. Ryan Watson (34) provided good support in a second-wicket stand of 70 and Neil McCallum helped complete the victory with a run-a-ball 22. Denmark wasted a solid position after Carsten Pedersen (72) and Soren Vestergaard (50) added 99 for the third wicket. Three run-outs didn't help their cause, while Scotland's death bowling also held firm.

Kenya lose to club side
Posted
3 weeks, 6 days ago in Kenya
Kenya’s preparations for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers took a dent when they were well beaten by an Abeed Janmohamed XI at Cranleigh School. Janmohamed, who played for Kenya in 2004-05, led a strong side which included New Zealand’s Grant Elliott.
Kenya started well, reaching 81 for 1 before suffering a mid-innings collapse that left them 133 for 6 off 34 overs. Alex Obanda made a confident fifty but there was little else of note, and Steve Tikolo made only 1. Teenger Phil Roper, like Janmohamed, a product of Cranleigh School, took 2 for 20 off 10 overs, while Luke Woodcock returned 3 for 18. In the end, Kenya limped to 162 all out in 43 overs.
Elliott smashed 77 as Kenya’s bowlers were struck to all parts, while Seren Waters made 47. Waters, the son of former Kenya chief selector David Waters, left Cranleigh earlier this month and made the second-highest number of runs in the school’s history in 2008. He has already represented Surrey 2nd XI. Janmohamed’s side romped to a five-wicket win.
Twenty-four hours later, Kenya got back on track with a win at Hove against Guernsey, but again the side ranked as the leading Associate were forced to struggle after being bowled out for 194. Tikolo again failed, making 4, as Kenya slipped to 51 for 4 before Thomas Odoyo (61) bailed them out. Guernsey never challenged after being reduced to 40 for 6, although they did well to make 122 in 44.4 overs.

Florida to host West Indies tournaments

It is being reported in the Caribbean that the KFC Cup, the region's premier limited-overs competition, will he held in Florida.
Trinidad & Tobago's Newsday claimed that a senior West Indies board official said the event would be staged in Fort Lauderdale where a new purpose-built stadium has recently opened. The seating capacity is 5000 but there is room for more on grass banks.
In a further bid to attract local interest Canada and USA will be invited to participate. Canada played without any real distinction in 1995-96 and 2002-03 while USA took part in 2000-01 and scored a surprise win over Barbados.
The event has been brought forward to October because if held at its usual time it would clash with the multi-million dollar Stanford match against England.
KFC's sponsorship ends this year and the new sponsors are thought to be based in Florida and will bankroll the entire venture.
"I believe Lauderhill is strategically well-placed," Faoud Bacchus, the former West Indies Test player and USA captain, who now lives in Florida, told dreamcricket.com. "We have all the facilities, hotels and attractions and it's only a short plane ride from West Indies.
