'This is our greatest win'

Posted on 04/11/2009 in ICC World Cup Qualifiers

Hamid Hassan

It is hard to describe how I feel after helping Afghanistan beat Ireland at Krugersdorp – probably the greatest win in the history of Afghanistan cricket. To take five wickets in such an important game for my country if a fantastic feeling and I am very proud of all my team-mates.

When I came back onto bowl with six overs of the match remaining, we knew that we had to get some quick wickets if we were to have any chance of winning the match.

They were trying to score quickly and playing quite a few cross batted shots so my focus was on trying to bowl the ball as full and straight as possible. I managed to build up a really good rhythm and was bowling as quickly as I could.

Once I had got out Andrew White, my focus was then just trying to bowl a maiden over, but somehow I ended up taking three wickets – it was unbelievable! I enjoy bowling in pressure situations at the end and I think my yorker is very useful at that stage of the game.

I believe this victory shows the potential of the Afghanistan team. It is hard to think just under two years ago, we lost to Singapore in the World Cricket League Division 5 on a cold day in Jersey and now we are beating a team that defeated Pakistan and Bangladesh at the last ICC Cricket World Cup. That is incredible progress and I don’t think anybody could ever have predicted that this would happen to us.

Not only are we developing our cricketing skills, as I think we have learnt a lot about our batting, bowling and fielding, but we are developing the mental side of our game as well as we have showed great character to respond from three defeats.

Only by having the chance to play against the best sides on a regular basis will we develop the consistency that we need to compete against the biggest Associate teams on a regular basis. That is why it is so important for us to do well in our remaining three matches and try and qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup or at least finish in the top six of the table to gain ODI status.

It is a massive game for us on Monday against Canada and we will certainly be approaching that match with a lot of confidence. After everything that has happened to this team, I don’t think anybody can predict what will happen.

Hi Hamid
As an Indian, i am supporting your team all along the way. In the past i rarely followed the qualifiers, but because Afghanistan is playing with such passion, i am following the entire tournament. Keep up the good work, and make your country proud. Prove to the world, that cricket, indeed is more than just a game, it is life. All the best with your future, regardless of what happens in the tournament.

It was an absolute miracle what our Team has achieved today! This Afghan team is keep making history by beating world class teams. They beat the strongest team of the tournament and a side which has already beaten Pakistan and Bangladesh in the past!

After recovering from the batting collapse and the 100+ runs batting partnership between the low order Irish batsmen, nobody really believed that they are going to turn the match in their favour. It was the one and only Hameed Hassan who took three quick wickets to complete his five wickets for just 23 runs with two maiden overs.

Congratulation boys!

It was an incredible victory! I think many people thought Afghanistan cannot overcome Ireland as Afghanistan was beaten by Ireland in the warm-up match, but the guys proved otherwise.
I really had the feeling that Afghanistan would make some upsets.
Now, we are on 7th, but I am sure we will raise the ranking table and ODI status is definitely at stake.

Go Afghanistan! I am supporting you guys and I love the way you played under pressure. In a few years and with proper funding etc. you will be a competitive one day squad. I watched the ESPN special and it touched me that so many of your players were in refugee camps using an old helicopter as a pavilion/change-room
Afghanistan's passage through this journey of trying to qualify can be described as cricket's version of the movie "Cool Runnings". Regardless of whether you qualify or not you have done your country proud!

Great work as a whole team :)Hassan is going to go through big line ups like those of South Africa, Australia and so on.Really appreciated win!!
To cricinfo.com; I'd like to see ball by ball details of Afghan's matches or rather at least change the score cards a bit faster so we slip on waiting for half an hour "at times I experienced" to upload it..
Wish our team conquers every team and show to rest of the world what we are capable of? Next on is CANADA..let's see Waadaaap PLAAAYAAAA'Z ;)

Good luck. and yes well done Raees

Congratulations to Afghanistan! As you said it, it is definitely a great victory. Considering that Ireland is the best team in the tournament and they were un deafeated and had not lost more than 4 wickets in the tournament, it is definitely a great victory. I am happy that you are back in the hunt for a spot in the world cup. I was deeply dissapointed by your loss against Netherlands and UAE. I thought that in both these matches, you had good chances for winning. I seriouly wish that you keep your momentum going. Canada is playing very well this tournament. So plan very well and moreimportantly execute your plans very well.

Congratulations to Afghanistan. I too have been following Afghanistan from my computer in New Jersey. Will Luke's coverage has been outstanding over the past few weeks. The massive response to Hasan's post only shows how much people are rallying around them. I am pulling hard for Afghanistan to make it into the top four and qualify for the World Cup, but if they don't, it would only highlight the outrageous decision two years ago by the ICC (BCCI) to cut the World Cup from 16 to 14 teams, eliminating two spots that would be there for the Associates. Perhaps the greatest story from the last World Cup was Ireland beating Pakistan to advance out of the Group Stage. But that killed a matchup between Pakistan and India in the next phase, and the television advertising revenue along with it. Instead of rewarding a team like Ireland and those on their level in the hopes of advancing the game worldwide, they punished them by cutting out two future spots. Hopefully Afghanistan still qualify.

TO ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE AFGHAN TEAM
Your fight to succeed against all odds in becoming a true cricketing nation shows how versatile Afghans can be in all facets of life.
Like you all, as a result of yet another war(In a different era), I grew up and learned to play cricket in a country away from Afghanistan. Today, I am proud to say that even at the age of 72 years I still play cricket, though at a lower level but still challenge young men on a regular basis.
Keep your focus and composure and the Afghan in you will help in surmounting all obstacles towards your goal of qualification for 2011.
God Bless you all.

Hey Hamid!
Great bowling today! I was really waiting for a good bowling spell for you, because you hadn't gotten many wickets. Now your back to the Hamid that we all know about. It was great to see you beat Ireland today, I am really happy for you. Its true that to reach the World Cup 2011, you still have to win your remaining games, but I am sure that you will end up with ODI status. Great work again, and good luck on your game against Canada. After Ireland they are the second best team, all I have to say is don't loose early wickets, Canadians will get on top of you after that, and watch out for Rizwan Cheema when you guys bowl. Get him early, and you have a great chance, anything above 215 and I am sure you can defend it.
Good Luck and hope to see you in India in 2011!!!!!!!

Afghanistan are an extremely exciting team. The rate at which they have improved is incredible. At this stage it would be a massive loss to international cricket if they do not achieve ODI status at the end of this tournament, but to do that they must beat Scotland and Namibia. Good luck Afghanistan, we're all barracking for you!

Hi Hamid - nice to read your blog mate. I am damn pleased by Afghanistan's performance and your display of getting 5 wickets and probably being the fastest bowler in the tournament (and still have time and energy to Blog) ... good on you and all the best. I am from India originally and follow developing cricket quite closely. As and when you come to New Zealand to play, I will try to get your Autograph as I will be happy to meet a down to earth fast bowler, proudly playing for his battered nation. Bangla v Aus 2005, Ireland v Pak 2007 ... Afghanistan v Ireland 2009.
Congratulations (from an Ireland supporter) on an explosive spell of bowling, a top-class team performance and what sounds like a splendid game of cricket. I can't wait to see you guys on TV.

I'd just started fancying Ireland to win - 24 off four, and Kevin O'Brien has a history of responding well to pressure - then came THAT over. The stuff of which legends are made.

Hoping we meet again in the world cup, and all the best for your remaining matches.

Well done Hamid Jana and rest of the team. As I was reading all these comments of supporters, lots of tears rolled down my cheeks. These are, though, the tears of joy. I am personally very touched as an Afghan and take immense pleasure and pride in the recent achievements of Afghanistan. I am sure every Afghan cricketer is at the happiest time of their life thanks to the greatest victory, but we should not forget that our team still needs to win the rest of the matches. I hope our brave and patriotic Afghan cricketers will take advantage of every opportunity; punish the balls while simultaneously not getting over-excited by hitting every ball for a boundary. Since we are playing against some strong sides, we gotta be very cautious: Sorry Kabir Khana wrora, lots of us are stepping over your shoes. The Afghan nation, and the Afghan people living in various countries are rooting for you and praying for you. We have faith that you all are gonna make us and the country proud! Baryalee Osai!

Dear Hameed well done,u & ur entire team mates proved today that ur eleven is simply the best.We know about ur team capabilities and strength(simply i allways call it Rambos).your final drone attacks of fast bowlling rocked the strongest Irish walls & i blieve that u were in need of a click and u did it,keep it up.Once again i sujest u sharing ur fast yorkers & reverse swing techniques with great kabir khan which indeed no doubts has boosted ur team moral & mental status very high.I really liked karim's flowing knocks,Asghar's patience & maturity, experienced Rais support in the depth,All round destructions of Nabi & shinwari which really bows down the opponents,Mangal leadership is really admirable & he is unstoppable once he is batting in his rethem,we really missed Dawlat & Hasti but the substitution(Noori&Nasrat)left no stone unturned, shezad's has added spirit & is remarkable ,Noor u just started proofing u r a wall, shapoor last wicket was awesome hope he is not hurt.shabas afghans

First of all, congratulations to Afghanistan and to all country men around the world, and to Afghan Team, we are proud of you guys. We really are.
I live in NY, USA so the time that the matches start in SA here is around 3:30 am. But what to do i can't resist not knowing how the match is progressing, so I stay awake all night and keep refreshing the scorecard page for updates. Since the beginning of this tournament i have stayed awake to just keep myself informed and hoping to read that (match over and Afghanistan won).

The only thing i want to say to Hameed jan and rest of our team is guys, you don't have the right to have hope. Hope and faith is for us the fans to have in you. All you can do is believe in yourselves as you have thus far and make us proud just like you are doing so.

Finally i want to wish you all best of luck, just believe in yourselves and bowl them out.

Pass my Salaams to the rest of the team.

Keep your form in the coming matches INSAH ALLAH we will win my advice is to captain and coach of Afghanistan that they should play attacking first spell with hamid hassan and Dawlat if put pressure on Scotland……………….
As we all know that hamid is the fastest bowler of the tournament and the new ball had the shine and morning whether is also suitable for the fast bowler why we don’t play him in the first 10 over

To,
AFGHANISTAN CRICKET TEAM

Hearty Congratulation to you on winning in the way u won. I have been following Afghan team for quite some time and I always had the faith in your team to do well. Was a bit disheartened when I saw the team 4th in the rankings, but by winning so impressively you have again gained my confidence. Fantastic Win Boys, Rock On.

Yes, definately the following matches will be very hard fought, with everyone vying for place in WC11 and ODI's status.

Hope Hamid Hassan, u get an invitation for a place in IPL from some team or the other. As an Indian, we are naturally inclined towards Afghanistan, so to see you succeed is really a very nice feeling. In fact, no other Associate team could grab my attention as you people. The upcoming matches will be close I guess, but c'mmon guys give it one last push and get over with it to conclude and justify what has been a meteoric or rather celestial rise from ashes to glory.

Best of Luck

Congratulation Afghanistan!!!
It’s really a big victory for Afghanistan in the history of its Cricket, beating a team who has revealed as the best team of this occurrence is not some thing painless.
I was checking of on the game through internet and my hope was for Afghan victory but was keep telling my self that we are losing this game too because keep telling we (the Afghan) are winning is a bad luck for me, Since the three lost.

This victory is gorgeous victory of our team and remembering the joy is keep making me weeping again and again even every time when I hear or see people talking about you courage.
Afghan National Cricket Team!!
Our (The Afghans) prayers (Dowa) are with you and the hopes are for you to win all the coming game and let the world know Afghanistan for a better Cricket Country.
Good Luck wishing you all the triumphs in the coming events.

Believe me I am a tough hearted person who hardly cries, but watching the scorecard on Shamshad TV and finally Afghanistan team beating Ireland, tears of joy were dropping of my eyes and you guys made me cry again while reading above words about some of our great young players of Afghanistan team. When Ireland 186/5 believe me I gave up and started cursing you guys because I was out of control please forgive me for that, but you Hamid and all other players made me alive again. Please do bat well in the next matches because we are confident enough on our bowling potential but the only area which has been a little problem for our team that is fielding and batting and I pray and I do urge all Afghans to do pray for our team to make it for the WC2011 and by this way you will unite all afghans together forever. Anything around 240 plus can win us matches against the best teams in world. Inshah Allah we will qualify…………… Afghanistan Zinda Abad. Afghanistan Zinda Abad. Afghanistan Zinda.....

i am an australian and have been following the qualifiers since it started. afghanistan have done really well and i hope they will get ODI status and maybe even qualify for the world cup. i'm sure they can beat namibia but might have a bit of trouble against canada. not saying afghanistan is bad but canada is a good one day side.

please finish in at least the top six because if you don't i'll have to wait another four years for the next wc qualifier(which you should hopefully be in!) and i will be 16 by then and might have too much homework to try and follow the cricket.

bestwishes from noel

being an afghan i proud of having such a great team, for me win or lose do not make any since, cuz in any type of game one team as to win. But for a team which is started just 2or 3 years back and reached at this stage this soon it is unbelivable. winnig the finals in 3 devissions, it is it self a world champion, Austerlia has won the 3 last word cups and made a record with his experionce over 50 years and our team got at this stage within 3 years of circket, and if we paly for years i dont think any other team can win from us, even i am afraid any one can play with our team or not,

I am realy happy for this great win of our team keep it up and congertulation to all circket lovers.

I cant say that all the efford is going to Hamed, he has don will, but it is team work all the team memmbers have don great job in this match and last matches.

Many Many Congratulation.I am a Pakistani and seen some of you guys playing in Peshawar.
But There Is still lot of thing to achieve.First Target is now to beat Canada.Analyze there strength and weaknesses. You guys if able to beat Canada[I think you can but little bit of confidence and temprament is needed] then it will really open your chances from super eight advancement.
Don't take it too much that Canada is at top of points table as the previous day ireland were on top and you were able to beat them.Just give your best against Canada as Well.Inshallah you will won.

in the game against canada the batsmen should play very watchfully and wait for the right delivery to hit. I have played college level cricket, but cuz we dont have enough players and grounds here in Germany I havnt playend since then. I wish one day my son plays for Afghanitan!!!

Well Hamid I don,t know how to praise u & ur performance.I & ur Brother Dr. Rashid was following this Game in my hostel room (Board Peshawar) like all other games & before u were called for the 2nd spell we had to pray our evening prayer here & Beleive me I wasn't admitting it that we r losing today & during & after the pray, I was thinking that Hamid ( The Jalalabad Express ) will come & Inshah Allah will hit some clean bowlds.... Believe it or not It was in my mind through out My Evening Prayer & When I entered the room, Dr. Rashid was operating on the Laptop & I felt him as he was feeling very losthearted & disappointed. But When You Started ur 2nd spell, I Started Saying Alla-o-Akbar, Allah-o-Akbar in my heart & Rashid could hardly say Astaghfirullah in his heart,bt after that single over He was shivering & I helped him with water.
After the match no one could control our imotions.
The Credit goes to u & all other Lions
Once Again..... Mubarak Mo Sha....
Keep it up.
Thaaaanx.

Hamid, we all Pakistani are praying for your team success. Inshallah your team will win one day status and Inshallah will compete in world cup 2011. You have been defined as a Fast and quick bowler in this qualifier, how do you feel about this? I also play cricket and I have some useful tips for you:
1) Always bowl many overs in net practice because it will give your muscle more power and your muscle will work more efficiently.
2) Always focus on fielding because if you are a good fielder then you will automatically become a bowler or batsman.
3) Review your opposite team always and if possible see it's video clips and know the weakness of player.
4) Bowl according to the field.

I think it's enough for you and your team mates. I hope your coach don't want to have another coach :)
GO FOR ANOTHER WIN !!!!

Great effort but bad luck against Canada - the World cup needs you for 2015. Sure you'll be there.

Posted by: lakesidey at April 15, 2009 6:41 AM

I was so sure you'd beat Canada, the way you folks played....but it was not meant to be! But very well played all the same - and if you win the last match today you should be able to make the top 6 and get ODI status. All the very best!

I shall continue to watch your team with interest....your journey has been an eye-opener and a pleasure to follow!

Congratulations, Afghanistan!!

I was recently in Paris and mistook a waiter at a hotel to be an indian, only to be informed that he is from Afghanistan - and what did he tell me? That he was proud to be an Afghan - as his country is going to qualify for the WC 2011!!!

You guys have not only made fellow afghans proud, but every cricket-lover in the world proud.

We salute your talent and more so, your spirit - with which you have displayed your exemplary character so far.

May the Almighty continue to guide you, your team and your lovely country to more and more successes and fortunes.
