'The most famous day in Afghanistan cricket' - Hassan

Hamid Hassan

It is the proudest day of my life knowing that I am going to have the opportunity to play one-day international cricket for Afghanistan. I feel absolutely wonderful – it is a brilliant achievement for our country.

A couple of years ago we could never have dreamed that we would have ever had the opportunity to play at the World Cup Qualifiers and now we are going to be a one-day international team. It is the most famous day in the history of Afghanistan cricket.

I was so proud to take the final wicket to seal the victory and when I realised what had happened I just threw myself to the floor and started crying. I have never felt so much emotion in my life and I just couldn’t control my tears.

These tears were for all the people in Afghanistan who have been supporting us as I know they will be so proud of our achievements and I want to thank everybody for all their inspiring messages in response to my columns. They have been a real boost to me and the team throughout the tournament.

To beat teams like Scotland, Ireland and Namibia in the Super Eight stages shows how far we have come as a cricket team in the past year and it is very important that we have a chance to play against the top Associate teams in ODI matches, as I think we have shown how much we have learnt just by taking part in this tournament.

We were not too disappointed that we didn’t qualify for the World Cup, as it was very important that we have the opportunity to play ODI cricket on a regular basis in the next four years, although I do hope that I will have a chance to play at that event one day.

I am also really looking forward to playing in the ICC Intercontinental Cup as I think that we will learn a lot from playing four-day cricket for Afghanistan. We will have a lot to learn, as we haven’t played that much one-day cricket, but we are all keen to learn as quickly as possible and do well against the top teams.

We will also be playing in the ICC World Twenty20 2010 Qualifier later this year and it would be amazing if we can qualify for the Caribbean next year.

My perfect day was also rounded off when I found out that my visa for the UK for this summer came through today, so I am going to be playing some club cricket in England this summer. That is very exciting and will be another great experience for my cricket career.

While we will obviously celebrate our achievements in reaching ODI status, what better way would there be to finish the tournament than if we beat Scotland on Sunday and come in fifth position. I am really determined for us to do well in that match.

Thank you again for all your support and I hope you will continue to follow the fortunes of our team as we begin to take the next step on our incredible cricket journey!

Congratulations Hamid and the rest of the team.
You guys have made your nation proud.
Too bad you did not make it to the World Cup, but ODI status is also great news. It was great following you guys from Division 5 to now.
Hope you do well in the T20 WC qualifier and we get to see you guys next year in the Caribbean. You were the main player with the ball, and all the batsmen did great.
Just keep it up and beat Scotland again on Sunday to finish this great tournament on a high note.
Congratulations once again and yes playing in the ICC Intercontinental Cup will help you guys get much better as you will play cricket more regularly and in different conditions.
Also great news to hear that you will be playing in England, gives you a chance to get better and play against better players.
Congratulations once again Hamid and the rest of the Afghan team.

Well done Afghanistan! Well done Hamid!
I am so much pleased for your success and pray for Afghanistan to become a full status ICC member in near future. You have the talent and the passion to do it, and I am sure you will do it soon inshallah. Being a Pakistani, I congratulate the whole team, the nation, and look forward for matches between Afghanistan & Pakistan.
Today, after a bad news of taking world cup away from pakistan by ICC, at least there is some thing to cheer about.

Congrats.U really deserve this for your shear hard work and determination. For a narrow miss against Canada,we could have seen u in WC 2011.Non the less we r proud of ur performance.I cant explain how happy i am.Do well against Scotland. It will be dream come true when i will see u bowl against Sachin.Cheers!!!!!!!

Posted by: Ashwin at April 17, 2009 4:29 PM

Congratulations to Afghanistan. This is indeed a great achievement. Your team started from Division 5 and in less than a year you see yourself in Division 1 in less than a year. This clearly is demonstration of the fact that if you have it in you you can climb up the ladders very fast.
Though it is a great achievement for Afghanistan, but I am a little disappointed by the fact that your team will miss the world cup. I think you should have won your game against Canada. In group stage defeat against UAE also did no good to you. I seriously think that you had both these matches in your favor but somehow let it go.
Nevertheless, you have good four years in your hand to prove to the world that it was no fluke that you reached this level. Beating the top associates during this tournament is a testimony of the talent stored in your team. The best thing is that you are now eligible for Intercontinental Cup which will give you a flair of 4 day cricket.

All the best to your team!

I have become a die-hard supporter of Afghanistan team. But will tell all of you not to lose the steam and keep in mind that it is the beginning and not the end of the road. All the best for your future.

Hi Hamid, You and all of the Afganistan team should be very proud of your achievements. I cannot imagine what a team like yours and players would have had to go through over the years and yet here you are against all odds doing better than some very well esablished teams and organizations with proper funding and structure.

What put it in prespective for me was the photos I saw you out of the ashes page, one example of Afgani team using an old, breaking down mattress for fielding practise.

Congratulations and we hope you and your team continue the good work.

Well done!!!!

Congrats to all!
I really don't believe it that a team which was playing against Japan & Vantaue about a year ago to qualify for 4th division, is today having an ODI status.
SHOKRAN ALHAMDULLALAH!!!!

Hamid!! It really shows how briliant you & your teammates are. It doesn't matter whether you might have qualified for World Cup 2011 or not, but it really makes me to believe that you and all the team played better than all in the tournament.
You are the real heros of Afghanistan.
I really like your progress. Keep it on..

Wish you success in all your prosepective events.

Well done to all the Afghans, a pity that my team Scotland had such a bad tournament. I'm sure that if you work hard over the next 4 years you will qualify - perhaps it's a blessing in disguise as I think that the next 4 years will mean you'll be even better prepared for the next world cup! Good luck!

Wonderfull!!! well done boys. You deserved it really. But I have a few comments on the match and the tournament too. Today when Shahpoor was sent in and not sami, i was really shocked at that decision. Specially when Sami had been scoring so fast and was in form. I think we lost a 10 runs in that decision which could have been a decieding factor at the end. Nabi & Asgar had not been performing for now few matches. A lot of times a flying innings was haulted at that point, but decision was not made to seperate them in batting order to minimize the psycological effect. And at the end sami was used a couple of over too much today instead of bringing in pace when it was needed. But end is well so all is well. CONGRATULATIONS

I just wanted to say well done to the Afghanistan team, I have followed your success all the way from Jersey last year when my Dad and I went over to watch Division 5. On our first day there we saw you beat Botswana as rain approached and Taj Malik was getting very nervous walking round the boundary, but he did find time to talk to us and was ever so polite. All the best for the future!

Hamid Jana, I have been following our team all along since you guys started playing in Argentina. I wouldn't be wrong to say that nothing has grasped so much of my attention and curiosity as did your matches in the Super Eight round. Your personal performance against Ireland made my day here in Cairo Egypt where I am the only Afghan student at the American University in Cairo. Throughout this tournament I have been stealing time between classes running to the library to check on the results of your matches. Most of the time I would proudly announce to my friends that "we won." That pride is yours. Among my friends are also Canadians studying here in Eygpt--let me tell you that even Canadians were praying for your victory most of the time. We all love you. Continue your victorious march and remain humble. I personally can't wait to see you play the likes of Australia, England, Pakistan and India. Keep it up and let's hope that you qualify for the 20-20 World Cup. Keep making news...

First of all I like to congradulate entire Afganistan team for their most historic achievement in their cricketing careers.

Further like to accept newest memebr to Asian Cricket Council (ACC)

As Sri Lankans we know how difficult to gain such recognitions in cricketing world. Most of us still remember the difficult path which we came through to gain full test status in 1982 (27 years back) We are the first country who won the assocate member's tournament in 1975 and subsequently won the world cup in 1996. It is tough we all know that as Sri Lankan's. We like to tell our Afcan brothers you have just started the cricketing journey there is lot more to go.

Hope you can gain full test status soon and that has to be your vision tomorrow onwards.

Good Luck for the entire team to perform well in future tournaments and hope you can join Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan & Bangladesh as a full member very soon.

It has been great to watch you guys come from the camps all the way to ODI status. I wish you guys all the best in the intercontinental and hope to see you in the next world cup. I have cried everytime you have won a match, I dont know why is this happening? Normally when we are sad we cry, but I have cried whenever you have won. It shows how much we have suffered as a nation and people and your victories bring the tears of joy in the eyes of every Afghan.

We have already beaten Ireland, Scotland and hopefully one day we will beat England as well!!!

Having already said at the begging of the tournament, this Afghan team has already won the world cup. I mean few months ago, nobody had really expected that they could beat such big teams.
A big big achievement for our team who has proved to the entire world that Afghans have the ability to set courses - if they get an opportunity - and make the nation proud!
Many congratulations to the entire team and to the entire Afghan nation!
Sport and education is the only solution of the conflicts in our country and not any military operations!

I am an ethnic Afghan who is a proud Pakistani aswell. It would be difficult for me which team to cheer when the both play together. I pray that the Afghans can progress from here and that they do not get into the likes of Bangladesh who are still rejoicing over small one day achivements. This is a good platform for the young Afghans to enter and make Afghanistan into the first Central Asian test playing nation. Its a long road ahead but with dedication and hard work this road can be cut short. Way to go Afghanistan, love you babe.

Congrats to Afghanistan and United States of America. The cricket team has performed miraculously and risen to great heights. US has helped give freedom to Afghans and it is because of this that cricket can be played freely and widely. I hope that you can build on this.

Congrats . . And i hope you guys keep the same momentum with cricketing skills development . . Div 5 to an ODI team within an year is an amasing thing . . Although expecting a WC Debut is too much 2 ask from an youngest team . . But main thing is your team has got 4 years time span to develop yourself fully as a cricket team . . Show everyone that gaining ODI status wasnt a fluke at all.
I am an indian and i can sense a feeling of joy in every afgan's heart . But let me tell u guys that this is just a begining . The real hurdles are ahead of you . Honestly to speak , it is still a long way to go for your team . .
Everybody knows how poorly Bangladesh has performed at test level . Fortunately you guys have 4 years in hand . If 1 year can take you from div 5 to ODI status then imagine what will happen within a 4 years time . . BUT ONLY THING IS KEEP IMPROVING YOURSELF . . international level is far superior than First class level and we have seen many great 1st class level players failing at international level .
To sum up everything . . I would like to suggest u ppl to take this as only a starting point . . And your real development begins from now onwords . .
AND LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST . . Congrats for ur achievements and Best of for yours and ur teams bright future . .

Congratulations to Afghanistan. Their presence in international cricket arena will provide the rest of the world a different picture altogether who associate the name of this historic country with war, taliban etc. We have grown up hearing the tales of Kabuliwala and the mention of "Kandhar/Gandhar". It would be great to see them in future tournaments including Asia Cup.

Very impressive performance from Afganistan in what has been a very exciting tournament, possibly more interesting than the last world cup. Ter tolo cakha makh ke da Afghanistan Zmaryano ta mubaraki worandi kawam.
Afterward it's one of the proudest day not only to you but to all Afghans around the world as once again the Afghan Flag has rose to the skies and we have shown the world that when Afghans start to do something then all you could expect is the best, beating likes of Ireland, Scottland and Namibia who are all experienced teams and have played in the World Cup, is not something that every new team can approach.
So priase be to Allah who granted all of us such a great day and may his mercy always be with you all, Loins of Afghanistan.

We are all very proud of you guys and i hope that today's achievement will bring with it several more wins in the future. am saddend that afghan cricket future is not going to prosper as it has been hijacked by soprts mafia.almost all the officials are corrupt and mafia dons they will only try to make more money in short time and am worried not to use you guys to smuggle poppy through you guys so be careful.well i give all the credit to you guys and the bogus cricket board of afghainstan gets nothing but hell.

I have already started talking to organisations to find funding for Afghanistan team. Anyways you guys proved to have the potential to become on of the biggest cricketing team. I just didn't liked the rules. They should have started the super eights with all teams starting from 0 points. but anyways still ODI status make me proud.

The fact that you have so many supporters from every cricketing nation shows how important your acheivement is. Keep up the spirit. Be the perfect example of a true cricket team.

Well done and we are very proud of you. Fantastic job. The speed with which this has happnened was only possible due to your hard work. You are the heros of this nation and you have made us feel good. I salute you all.

Now, the governament should really plan and prepare for the promotion of the game in the country. When I recall we do not yet have one single pitch, let alone a ground in the country, and we have ODI status, it is just amazing. They have to establish grounds at least in the five bigger cities, provide oppourtunities to the team to play in the first class domestic tournaments in the test playing countries and use the funds that will come from the ICC wisely. It is very simple, the talent and the passion is there, it is just in the hands of the governament to turn this oppourtunity into reallity as Cricket can be a big industry in itself. They can creat jobs with it, and can bring alot of money with it to the country. I am not sure if they have the will & want to do it

Dear Hamid/Nawroz/the rest of Afhan cricket team !

Aslamu Alikum !
You would not know how proud we all Afghans are from your dramatic success in cricket in the past one year. Before you could have hardly heard or read about Afghanistan cricket but now you are making headlines in all cricket websites. Just like you , I could not stop my tears, whe you won the game against NAmibia. Our unforgettable moments were, when ourbeloved team defeated Irland, we all were so disappointed that we would be losing as Irland was just cruising at the end of inning. Then all of the sudden a Lion from Batikot rumbled and sent 4 Irish to the PaAvilion i and took out the game from their throats, I think that success was the turning point of your acheiments, I was mad on that day. my little son Faisal Wardak ( just 9 years) threw himself on the floor and was screaming by knowing that Hamid Hassan burst of fast bowling defeated Irland. We all are proud of you. Jawandee de wee Heroes of Afghan cricket.

I am so happy that we won the odi status. you guys played so well, that i hate to see you guys losing to the canandians, kenyans and uae.It is cricket and it is a game of chance sometimes.
i always search online and on youtube for your vidoes and anything about you guys.
your score average was better than most teams and i have to give a lot of cricket to the great kabir khan for organizing and training the team.
i cannot wait to see you guys playing odi matches so i can watch it live on tv.

I apologise for repeating what's been said again and again, but I'll say it anyway. WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!!! Maybe not qualifying is a blessing in disguise and instead of qualifying and getting beaten badly by the test playing teams (although I genuinly believe you can beat some of them), you will have a few more years to gradually build a world class team unlike Bangladesh or Zimbabwe. I just hope they build at least a stadium for you guys in Kabul.

I even bought a simcard to activiate internet on my phone to just follow this match. Your every winning made me cheered up not only me the whole guys in my village. I used to live in Kachagari too (Char Maro) I have seen some of you guys in persons. I was a bit disappointed that you guys didnt make it to WC2011 but never mind. You have gained ODI status thats alot. Remember one thing. Never and ever sell yourself. At least, I want to see my cricket team pure and after all that has been happening in this Holy land. So reject offers from other countries. Please be aware of tricks from other countries. You are the people that have done too much with nothing. I know most of U have even hav no good income to support yourself. All Afghans are with you.

Hello,

I want to see Afghanistan play against teams like India, Pakistan, Australia, South AFrica.

Congratualations on winning. Hope you win tomorrow as well against scots. I am looking to find a way to encourage some businessmen to make a cricket/ football playground in kabul. Hope cricket can reach to people of the world and give Afghanistan a good name. And hope this sport can do a little to stop the war in this war torn country. Pathans are furious, I am sure in a short time they can do much. As cricket is not a popular game in this country, we wont find talents easily like Pakistan and India. But remember guys if we do they will be tigers. Pathans in other times like India, Pakitan etc have been doing very well. Now they have know that the real Pathan country has started playing this game and it will surprise the world with just few more years. They just need alittle support both financially and physically.

Posted by: Ali Sajawal at April 18, 2009 8:52 AM

Hello Hamid. Congratulations to you and the Afghanistan team. We in Pakistan are very pleased and proud to see you rise to the status of ODI team. May Allah bless you and you reach even greater heights. It will be a pleasure to see you playing in Pakistan and competing with the men who had been your supporters in your struggle for gaining recognition as a cricket playing nation. Your performance against some of the more experienced teams was excellent and promises a lot for the future. Now concentrate on improving discipline in the team apart from training for batting, bowling and fielding. You must have your feet on the ground and eyes at the top position. Sometimes early success spoils a team's progress. Beware of that. Work hard. Be humble in success. Remeber the good work that your Coach Kabir Khan has done for you (I have not heard anyone making a mention of his contribution to the team's success). Good luck to you for Sunday's match against Scotland.

Posted by: Eyesy at April 18, 2009 9:16 AM

I have been following your progress with great interest and it's a tribute to you and your team that you have achieved what you have.
All the best for your English stint, for your continued success, and for the continuing rise of Afghanistan Cricket.
You have done your country proud.

Dear Hamid many many congratulations on your sensational performance. You and your whole team are the true proud of Afghanistan. Your team is a once in a liftime inspirational story, not only for Afghans but for the whole world. You showed to Afghans that with hard working, perseverance and unity you can achieve the impossible. I think Afghans will realise that they have talent and that with unity they can achieve more. Indeed you were not alone in letting your emotions go. I, and some others I know, shed a few tears of happiness when we realized that you reached ODI status (something other countries with much more resources coud not achieve in decades). But, demanding as the Afghan nation has already become, there was also a little bit of sadness that you lost the close match against Canada. Hoping and praying for many more successes of your team and to be able to watch your games in a full stadium, as I can't work anyways when you guys play.
Pa dranawee,
Erfan

Congratulations for Afghanistan Cricket team to achieve ODI status. Whenever I read comments about Afghan team they always talk about playing in the world cup and the hunger to succeed at the highest level. SO now that they couldn't reach the world cup I think the hunger for playing in the world cup well be there even more for the next four years to come. Hope to see Afghan Cricket team on TV or if they come to sydney to play Against Australia I will be the first one to go to the ground with Afghanistan flag in my hand and watch the match. It will happen but we have to wait for a wile until next Australian summer I reckon. Ok I have to go now I have a match today. Thank you Hamid for your blogs hope you blog more for us

I am an Australian and I am stoked about what Afghanistan has done. Should make a movie about what you guys did - except everyone would think it was made up!

Posted by: Moose at April 21, 2009 10:47 AM

I have been reading a lot about your country's recent history and it makes me very emotional to see how far you have come. I have been following your rise from Division 5 and never before have I kept track of the World Cup Qualifying tournament, or ICC Trophy as it was known as earlier (To put this into perspective, I have not bothered to keep track of the IPL). I am certain that you will play in the World Cup pretty soon and I am looking forward to it already. I shall keep track of your team's performance for the next 4 years and I am really happy for what you have done for your country and all your people who really deserve this victory and a lot more.

I wish you and everyone in your country all the very best and hope for a lot more victories in the future. I am currently awaiting the day when the Indian cricket team travels to Kabul to play Afghanistan. That day doesn't seem too far away now.

Sri Lanka went from a position similar to where Afghanistan are now in world cricket levels to World cup winners in about 20 years. This proves that anything is possible!! Well done on your amazing achievements to-date; keep at it guys. Sincerely hope your wonderful success brings great joy to all people of your country.

Congratulations to Team-Afghanistan.
If Afghanistan gets good exposure from other Asian Teams like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and SriLanka, then I am sure that it strongly come up in international circuit and may even get the full ICC membership.
