Afghanistan amongst famous names at Lahore camp

Posted on 01/07/2009 in Afghanistan

Afghanistan, sentimental favourites for this month's World Cricket League Division 3 tournament, are currently mingling with some famous names at their training camp in Lahore.

Leading batsman, Raees Ahmadzai, told Cricinfo this week that Shoaib Akhtar, Aamir Sohail, Rashid Latif, Ijaz Ahmed and Aaqib Javed, were amongst those providing guidance to the Afghans during the two week camp which finishes this Saturday.

Ahmadzai said the team had enjoyed the camp and the chance to tap into the expert knowledge of their mentors.

"We have discussed a lot of cricket,”Ahmadzai said. “Now the players are very relaxed, They feel better and look like complete cricketers. We worked a lot on temperament in camp. Our fast bowlers worked on how to control the new ball and batsmen on how we make partnerships to chase big targets."

Ahmadzai said the players were well rewarded after winning the WCL Division 4 title last year.
"The Governor of Ningrahar Province [in the country's east] gave all the players land for houses."

During their march along the World Cricket League, Afghanistan won the Division 4 and Division 5 tournaments, playing 12 games, winning 10 and losing just one. They were unbeaten in the stronger Division 4 tournament. Standing in its way in Division 3 are Argentina, Cayman Islands, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea and Uganda, whom Afghanistan plays in its first match on January 24.

It is very encouraging to know that some of the most successfuly cricketers of Pakistan Team are helping Afghans. I think it will benefit the Afghan team a great deal in becoming a more professional team.

We are in war, we are hurt, we are destroyed but we never let the time go unless to deter some moments for our triumph. Our honor is that we never visualize things; we do it in practical with full sensations. We have no tolerance to lose, that’s we are always winner, we are really thankful to the neighbor country Pakistan who are providing us with the foremost support in all aspects especially in cricket I am sure this camp will be so useful for afghan players cricketing skills “Amir Sohail” and the other players are well-known personalities in cricket world their advices and concern will place the team in a good spot looking forward for another historical Victory of WCL Division 3.

Being in the midst of such great players from the past, I am sure it will boost the moral of the young afghan players. I hope by providing with usable tips the former pakistani greats have helped the Afghans to come one more step closer to be an A-nation in cricket. I as an Afghan thank my fellow pakistani brethern and specially the pakistani cricket player for extending their experties to our team.

I whish conclussive and rejoicing vectories to this talented, hardworking and brave team in thier upcoming matches of div3 in Argentania.
I will never forget their 20twenty ACC semifinal match triumph against UAE in Kuwait at Ahmadi ground, they really outplayed them by thier heroic efforts unblievable catches, infact they were playing like RAMBO in his full action.
i have full confedence in this team and with the grace and well of almighty ALLAH they will qualify to the final rounds.
I think it is always great honour, pleasure and helpfull to be in association of great pakistani stars and heroes,it will definetly add immensely an extra knowledge and indeed will help if their guidance is seriously followed.we expects more experties fromour brothers in future.
we all pray success for our young team and may ALLAH return them home safely successfully.
Long live great AFGHANISTAN.
