Youngsters provide the foundation

Posted on 05/27/2008 in Thailand

The Bangkok Post has reported on the state of cricket in the Thailand, quoting the board’s Mohideen Kader.

“While many Thai youngsters are getting latched on to the game, Thailand is now busy preparing to stage three Asian tournaments, including an Asian Women's competition in which an all Thai team will take part,” he said. “The tourneys are being lined up to be held before the end of the year. They include an Under-17 boys competition, a seniors tournament, in which Thais and sons of expatriates (who have the required residential qualifications according ICC rules) will take part.”

''The progress achieved in spreading cricket in the Kingdom has been tremendous,'' said Kader. ''Girls from schools and universities have taken to the game.” The paper estimates there are 2800 cricketers in the country

“Encouraged by the development of cricket, we have schools which have included cricket in their curriculum,'' said Kader. ''That's the exciting keenness which has been created for the sport. It is true we cannot create champions overnight but step by step, cricket is being embraced by Thais.”

There are two grounds in Chiang Mai and three turf pitches in Bangkok, with the possibility of a fourth being set up at Thammasat University.

Hallo keen crickter,
Do not believ what you hear.Dumb CAT never speak any thing. They were building stadium in sukhumwit, money was pocketed, mislead ACC and nothing happened.Come to Bangkok.Play at Harrow and AIT.You will be happy indeed.

The recent ACC tournament has shown that Thailand Cricket is going nowhere. The Thai national team lost to Bhutan, an ICC affiliate without a proper cricket ground, in the semi finals.

Sources within local cricket circles say that the National side was hurriedly assembled, not trained properly, lacked a proper coach, and had selection issues until the last minute.

As an associate member of the ICC, Thailand should be expected to defeat teams such as Bhutan, and the Maldives however, there seem to be no signs of this happening anytime soon. If the National Side continues to prepare, be prepared, and perform in such a unprofessional, and dismal fashion, they will be losing to sides like Bhutan, who are improving all the time, more heavily in the future.

Dear Keen Cricketer, Few things that we do not have in Thai Cricket.

1)Who is the CAT chairman?

2)Who is the national coach or other coaches here training Thai squad?

3)Where do they get the training? How is this training carried on?

4)What is the process of selection of a National Squad?Where do these boys come from?( Not all those old fallas who played recently)

5)DO the different clubs get a chance to forward their best players to the National side or is it only RBSC ?

So many questions. We are sure we will never get the answers.Things are kept closed behind the door. The end is near and people who are responsible(if there is any one around) have never been seen around.
