Violence disrupts Kenya's preparations

Posted on 01/06/2008 in Kenya

Concern is growing that the civil unrest in Kenya might put the Intercontinental Cup tie against Namibia at the end of the month in doubt. It has already delayed Kenya's preparations for the match against UAE in Sharjah.

Its so sad the way the ego's of the political leadership, tribal tensions, and the general mistrust in the system have disrupted so many lives aside from just the ability of the national cricket team. Considering that the current both the current interim head coach and spin bowling all rounder Jimmy Kamande are Kikuyu while a vast majority of the rest of the team is of Luo origin not to forget the presence of players of Asian heritage perhaps that the unity they could be used as a sign for unity at at time the country needs it the most. Hopefully a peaceful resolution will be reached before the match against Namibia

No use hailing a wonderful match and trying to heap more praise on Oz and only acknowledging some umpiring disputes and Oz behaviour. Fact is Oz would not have won if it were not those very incidents. I hope the record is fully depised by all outside Oz.

Life in Kenya is going through a turmoil. Sports, with cricket being no exception, are usually played without any importance to the racial background of the participating cricketers. One only hopes that the ongoing racial animosity in Kenya does not adversely affect the Kenyan cricket administrators and the cricketers into putting the game to the backburner. The ICC Intercontinental Cup is virtually the World Test Championship for the crème de la crème of the ICC Associate members.
