Cricket Kenya is closing in on its hunt to find a replacement for Roger Harper, who stood down as coach after the ICC World Twenty20 in September.
More than 30 applications from around the world were received for the vacancy and Cricinfo understands that a South African-based applicant, believed to be Andy Kirsten, is among the front runners. He was in the frame the last time the position was open in 2005 but was committed to existing work in South Africa and eventually the board chose Harper.
Kirsten worked with the Kenyan side during their successful 2003 World Cup campaign when Sandeep Patil was the national coach. As a result, he is known to many of the senior players and is believed to have a good relationship with them.
Not only does Kenya need a senior coach to coach its top players,it also needs a junior development talent coach and a academy coach.
i wouldn't expect a coach of the senior team to have the time to run around the country organizing school cricket comps and camps.the ICC should get serious about Kenya's future in cricket and spend the money it needs to help Kenya along the path.
But i wouldn't expect the ICC to do to much about cricket development. And i would expect too many passionate cricket coaches to risk their lives to travel around Kenya at the moment.
but i hope kenya can get its act together,kenya should have already been given test status i think kenya vs bangladesh or zimbabwe would be more competetive than most would expect.
