Peter Steindl, the former Scotland fast bowler, has been announced as the country's new coach, replacing Peter Drinnen who resigned in July.
"After working with the squad last season on an interim basis I am delighted to progress to work full-time in preparing the team towards the 2009 ICC Trophy," Steindl said. "We have the opportunity to build on some excellent performances last season and prepare for an exciting fixture list this season. We have 16 months to prepare the squad for a massive event and the work starts now."
Drinnen resigned after a run of disappointing results, and the team played on without a permanent coach for the remainder of the summer as Steindl and Andy Tennant shared the position in an unofficial capacity. Steindl's tenure starts in earnest on January 1.

After making forgettable appearances in two ICC World Cups in nine years, Scottish cricket is definitely experiencing a low. It’s high time that the Scottish cricket administrators looked beyond England-discards like Gavin Hamilton and Dougie Brown to work wonders for Scotland at the highest level. While Hamilton caught attention courtesy some sparkling knocks in the ICC World Cup 1999, former England all-rounder Dougie Brown was a total flop in the 2007 edition of the Cup, as was young Turk and current county cricketer Navdeep Poonia.
Scotland should look to develop better cricketing infrastructure and train promising players in the English County circuit in a more systematic way. Irish cricketers like the O’Briens, Jeremy Bray, David Langford-Smith, Trent Johnston, Boyd Rankin, among others are known faces in World cricket, courtesy their effort in taking Ireland to the ICC World Cup 2007 Super Eights. One only hopes that Scotland can cheer in similar lines under Peter Steindl.
