Florida match ends with player being shot

Posted on 12/01/2007 in USA

A cricket game in Florida ended when one of the players shot an opponent with a semi-automatic rifle.

The UPI agency reported that Devan Bascom shot Francis Singh in the abdomen after he was threatened him with a cricket bat following a heated argument in the match in Orlando. In a rather bizarre comment, police said that while Bascom appeared to be acting in self defence, the presence of a gun at a game was “unusual”.

"The shooter was defending himself from an attack with a cricket bat which is similar to a baseball bat, but it's flat," a spokesman said. "For this man to bring a firearm to a sporting event is odd but then again, he has the right to do so. He has a concealed weapons permit and if, in fact, he was protecting himself, he was authorized by law to do so."

Bascom was questioned by police but not arrested while Singh underwent an operation and was reported to be in a stable condition.

That's cricket in North America for you. Even umpires turn up with knives here. And they wonder why the ICC expelled them.

I wonder if, under Florida law, a player could claim self-defence for shooting an opponent on the square for repeatedly bowling bouncers.

This is unbelievable! One day I was being attacked with a ball and all I did was hitting every one of them outside the designated area. Some guy in whites and a funny round hat kept on pointing both of his hands towards the sky. I wondered if he is calling for help or something. I got so tired after a while that I started walking toward my car and other people started clapping. They said words/phrases like "bravo," "lajawab," and "you batted like sashin tandaltar." They were wearing white clothes as well.

When I was in Barbados playing in Sir Garfield Sober tournament, other players kept on asking me, "does US have a creeckeyt teeeam?" "Do you guys play creeckeyt?"
