Another year, same old journalism

Posted on 12/22/2007 in Kenya

Some things remain depressingly constant and one of them is the media crusade against Cricket Kenya in The Nation.

“This was a year when Kenyan cricket sunk further into mediocrity despite Kenya’s triumph,” Richard Mwangi writes in an article mischievously and misleadingly entitled Kenya’s game still in the gutter, before a long rambling column which does little to substantiate his claim. He ends with a comment that the Cricket Kenya failed to hold an AGM “which could have ushered in new officials”. An explanation why might have helped but it suited his argument not to go into that.

Mwangi, like any reporter, is, of course, entitled to his views. But as we have stated before, there have to be questions as to who is pulling the strings of the general sniping. The board are privately angered by the stance of the Nation after several olive branches have been spurned or used to beat those offering them.

Kenya has issues for sure, but a year in which they won the World Cricket League and won 14 out of 17 ODIs, signed a new TV deal and a new sponsor cannot be all bad. But that’s not the kind of story that the Nation is interested in peddling. Kenyan cricket needs all the help it can get to rebuild, while being subjected to valid criticism, but they know by now that the mainstream newspapers won't be the ones to do that.

Countries such as Kenya ... which are quite good ... I feel as good as Bangladesh. Their performance has not been that bad. The newspapers instead of degrading the team should support it by showing the positives as well such as TV rights and a new sponsor.

The Chinese government is going to revamp the stadium; Kasarani sports complex there is enough room in the complex to house a cricket ground. It would certainly help raise the profile of the game, and would give Cricket Kenya another venue in which to host Internationals. Kenya is certainly in need of a ground with decent lighting, and this could be the perfect opportunity. With major cricket events to be held in Kenya over the coming years, and the definite possibility of more in the future, this would certainly be a worthwhile investment. Technical assistance from the ICC could probably even be arranged in the current climate of global expansion. Maybe Cricket Kenya should lobby the government before the plans are finalised.

Who helped in removing the obstacles?
Providing sponsors are Sahara Computers, African cricket council
Kenyan sports goods industry has shown interest in introducing Kashmiri bats in African markets. Kenya’s sports goods dealers launch Kashmir’s bats, which are very cheap. Now hope this should not be a problem.1 ground in Mombassa to host test matches and if possible 1 ground in Nakuru to host O.D.Is. In Nairobi.Thika town should get a ground with first class status Test venue in Kasarani sports complex to build a cricket ground With lights
The work, which is expected to take two years, will extend to the gymnasium, where a modern floor will replace the current, peeling surface, the aquatic stadium and accommodation buildings.
The aquatic stadium has suffered leak and cracks in recent years, causing panic among experts who feared a catastrophe.
The FIFA project, helps poorer countries to improve their facilities. ICC?
Construction of a golf course and a cricket ground will start

Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association NPCA elections have to be open and fair it’s the most important province.
Cricket Kenya should be in negations mood with the Test boards AND I.C.C. For more top 4-day games
Kenyan board should lift suspension of Centrals province and include their team in the provincial tournament with the help of some national players from Nairobi. They should build a turf pitch for them to host their home games.

Based on the above article, it may be also prudent for cricinfo to stop castigating the provincial affiliates with baseless reporting. as the old adage goes "One in a glass house should not throw stones"

EDITORIAL REPLY No example of any journalism based on anything but fact was provided with this mail. The reports of the NPCA have been rubbished by those within the NPCA but to date all the claims made against the NPCA have turned out to be 100% accurate.

Richard Mwangi is a lovely fellow but has no real understanding of cricket. 10 years ago he was writing similar articles in the papers sniping at different people as the puppeteers pulled his strings. Kenya needs stability now more than ever and Kenyan cricket needs to come behind those officails who are seriosuly putting the sport and its players above their own positions. Sharad Ghai and his cronies ended up with many millions of shillings which should have helped the grassroots development of the game and paid the senior players too. This is a reported fact in the Nation it'self. It is an absolute tragedy that there are still the same rediculous political games being played now ten years on. What a great waste. As I said, I liked Richard Mwangi. I hope that he will have the courage to pen accurate and rounded stories and not ones with limited infomraiton that distort the true position. What a very great shame.

Is The Nation good enough to crowned ‘the mainstream newspapers’— definitely not grammatically. What has the rest of the Kenyan journalistic media got to say about present state of cricket in Kenya. If The Nation is continuing writing rubbish on Kenyan cricket, it definitely does not deserve to be continue enjoying the status of a mainstream newspaper, cricketwise, as the least.

Cricket Kenya should develop venues for the National league. It is also an important step to gain Test Status; one requirement is to have accredited venues in at least two separate centers. The NPCA have the best one’s (Nairobi Gymkhana, Nairobi Jaffrey’s and Ruaraka club.) The government is building a cricket ground at Kasarani sports complex with floodlights. Any two of the above venues can be developed for tests. The CCA have venues like (Mombasa Jeffery’s floodlights have been installed and Mombasa Sports Club. The later fulfils parameters of a test venue. RVCA has (Rift Valley Sports Club, Nakuru Athletic and Greensteds School). Any one can be developed into an ODI venue. Centrals has Peponi School Limuru Country Club- (in central province area has a nice Pitch) and Thika Sports Club this was a cricket ground. Cricket was played here in 1980s, and when it died rugby took over- until that to died. These venues can be developed to first class level and used in National league games

Cricket Kenya and Nimbus Sport agreed a long-term deal for Nimbus to manage the commercial rights of Cricket Kenya. This is in reply to Mr. MASCARENHAS Queston on kenyan tv rights ?"
This six-year deal includes the rights for all international and domestic cricket events organised by Cricket Kenya. Under the deal Nimbus Sport will exclusively market all media and sponsorship rights and will also manage television production for all the events.
