Uganda impress despite Kenya defeats

It is a great shame we will not see Uganda's strongest team in action for the World Cricket League Division 2 tournament. As well all know, Jimmy Okello and Patrick Ochan are playing club cricket in Adelaide for West Torrens and performing well. To make matters worse, Charles Waiswa, who has emerged as the team's best paceman and promising opening batsman Roger Mukasa were not considered for selection for disciplinary reasons according to a recent report. Furthermore, Junior Kwebiha and Hamza Saleh did not make the final squad. Nevertheless, it is still a good combination if somewhat untested. It is my understanding that 20 year old spin bowler Davis Arinaitwe will captain the side. The other members of the squad are to my knowledge, Arthur Kyobe, Nand Kishore, Joel Olwenyi, Martin Ondeko, Kenny Kamyuka, Lawrence Sematimba, Frank Nsubuga, Daniel Ruyange, Emmanuel Isaneez, Ronald Ssemanda, Raymond Otim, Benjamin Musoke and Richard Okia.

Even though sports, be it cricket or anything else, are slightly different professions from other occupations, in them being much more often associated with fun above money, they are still professions. So, it is no wonder that good cricketers from emerging cricketing nations—Uganda, in this case, go and play club cricket in better pedigreed cricketing nations—Australia, for example, not just for the obvious reasons of honing their cricketing skills, but also for money.

Still, if Jimmy Okello and Patrick Ochan return to play for their motherland, Ugandan cricket can only stand benefited. For the moment though, Uganda would do well to concentrate on their available, and highly promising at that, bunch of cricketers.

With them putting up a fight against former ICC World Cup semi-finalists, Kenya and defeating World Cup qualifiers, Bermuda things seem to be going in the right direction for Ugandan cricket. Uganda was a part of the East Africa team that featured in the inaugural ICC World Cup in 1975. They should strive to regain their spot at the next edition of the premier world cricket event in 2011.
