Botswana schoolchildren hungry for cricket

Posted on 09/26/2007 in Botswana

The number of participants in Botswana's youth development programme has swelled dramatically from 300 children to almost 1300 in under six months, and shows no signs of abating.

Seven more schools have joined the initiative which has been sponsored by the ICC and the African Cricket Council (ACC) to promote the game to a wider, younger audience. Such is the enthusiasm that a league has been set-up for government primary schools.

I'm happy to hear that botswana is embracing cricket, its always nice to hear stories of success in an otherwise bleak outlook. I would really like to see this blog become more active, expecially with people from test-playing nations. This will surely bolster the appeal of cricket in general.

My name is Ritesh Gupta. I used to play cricket in Botswana from John Mackenzie High School in Francistown. I am very happy to hear about this development. I hope it grows even more to the extent that one day Botswana is able to participate in the ICC World Cup. I wonder if they would allow the schools in Francistown such as John Mackenzie or Clifton to join.

I hear there is a great all rounder by the name of "Bozo" who is only 9 or 10 and I hear great things about this lad - good bowler, excellent batsman and I wish the lad well - the future lies here. He needs to be guided and I guess his Pa will do that excellently for him as Pa is an Administrator of the game in Botswana. Pa has won an ICC award I hear as being the best volunteer in Africa couple of years ago. So good luck to "Bozo" and the lads in Botswana.
