Syed Ashraful Huq, the chief executive of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) believes that China's foray into the game will boost the chances of cricket making it as an Olympic sport.
"China's standing as the world's leading sporting nation can play a major role in influencing future Olympic rosters," Huq was quoted by the Associated Press of Pakistan. He said that China's say could help cricket's chances to make it to Olympics and that's why the game needed to be developed in the country. "I don't know if cricket can make it into the London Olympics in 2012, where it could have demonstration status, but maybe the one after that."
Huq indicated that although over a 100 countries played the sport, a major nation like China playing the game could help it qualify as a truly global sport. He felt that cricket's debut at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games will give the game a fillip in China.
He expressed confidence over the game's progress in Asia. "Eventually cricket will become the biggest game in the Asian Games - the number one, because it is seen by the most and it is followed by the most," he said.
Huq, who visited Guangzhou to see the cricket facilities being developed for the Asian Games, also praised the Pakistan Cricket Board for their assistance in promoting the game in China.
Cricket has been played only once at the Olympics, in 1900, though only one match was played, between England and France. Cricket also featured in the 1998 Commonwealth games in Malaysia.
I wish cricket could also be part of a game in olympic....i wish its could be...if cricket is a part of olympic i wish its should be 20-20...its a good game..

Having cricket in the olympics does not seem so audacious, well the time of european supremacy is over. The present world conditions proves that the world's most rich nations will be India and China and that too within a few decades. Now imagine the world's richest nations all cricket fanatics!!!. It will not only surely be included in the olympics but is surely to become the richest, most commercialized and most famous game in the world. But still i think a 3 hour game will be required for such an expansion and the 5 day format should be restricted to few countries only and not frequent.

cricket is a great sport with a rich tradition. with the advent of the 20-20 format, i am confident that cricket will come to the Olympics as early as 2016.

Yeah! I too am waiting to see cricket feature in olympic games. If china become a major cricket playing nation, It will only increase the chanses of the sport being included, and Of course, the most suitable format will be 20-Twenty. The ICC should give a serious thought to it and act earliest. After all, it truly will be the globalisation of the game which ICC is talking about, Being a cricket fan I urge ICC to ease out rules in according One day status to the second string teams. And think of graduating the teams like Kenya Ireland which have real potential to Test status. In the intial stage obiously we can't expect them to win tests against major countries, after continuous exposure they will definettly do it. Unless we give them a chance, there is no point in writing them off. We can see how Bangladesh is improving. We can recall there recent performance against Newzealand. In fact the leading Test playing countries are brought up by opening up to cricket world continuosly.
