Player smashes 304 in domestic 50-over match

Posted on 07/13/2007 in Canada

By Eddie Norfolk

Irfan Rabbani scored 304 from a 50-over total of 438 for 5 to help his Appolo team romped to a 227-run win over United XI in Toronto's First Division last weekend. This is the highest individual score in Canadian domestic cricket, overhauling the 280 scored by Canadian international player Don Maxwell when with York University.

Rabbani hit 48 boundaries and six sixes. He took part in stands of 120 for the second wicket, 155 for the third and 118 for the fourth. Naveed Tariq was next highest scorer with 57 runs. Rabbani was eventually bowled by Khayan Raja.

This feat is timely, as the fallen record comes on the eve of the second Canadian Colleges and Universities cricket tournament. This year's event has a 20/20 format and includes ten teams, who will be playing at Maple Leaf CC, King City, Ontario between Monday July 16 and Friday July 20.

Obviously some high quality bowling there.. What a joke. What an embarrassment.

Posted by: billa at July 17, 2007 3:07 PM

Rory..that may be true but scoring 304 still takes some doing no matter what kind of bowlers..and cricketers in Canada ain't as bad as people like to think.

Posted by: Kiri at July 17, 2007 9:22 PM

Irfan Rabbani is a very good allrounder...

Posted by: Faseeh at July 17, 2007 10:30 PM

I play in canada and by the looks of most grounds, with the exception of a few, don't have good outfield and scoring even a 100 looks like a feat to me. looks to me like he still ran 100 runs which takes quite a bit of fitness.

Also these teams dont play in TDCA so they don't get to play at good/international quality grounds.

Posted by: Addy at July 18, 2007 3:22 AM

How many Canadian international player have scored a half century even in Scarborough league. I played for a club with all superstars and they couldn't go and make even single 50 but they are playing in Canada cricket. Politics. I think this guy should be given a chance in international cricket.

Posted by: Raj at July 18, 2007 12:49 PM

I agree with Billa, 304 runs is not a matter of joke

Posted by: Faseeh at July 18, 2007 8:26 PM

well i dont know how good is Scarborough league but in my mind you have to perform in TnD to get anywhere in Canadian cricket as it is the best and largest league in North america.

Irfan Rabbani's score of 304 is a very creditable achievement at any level of cricket, as it is played by gentlemen and women who are dedicated to playing the game the way it is set out in the Rules of Cricket, upholding the game at a high level and as an individual feeling great pride to be at the middle pitting with pride ones individual talents against those of the opponents.

Australia went to South Africa, at at one of the one-dayers both teams scored over 400 runs each, but no individual player was able to take command of the game completely or even score as much Irfan Rabbani did (304).

I think Irfan Rabbani is a good batsmen and he requires the cricketing world and the cricket enthusiasts' goodwill and encouragement. And Irfan also needs to acquire a strong sports character just as his cricketing strength. If not knockers and the jealous, can pull him down.

Irfan Rabbani! Just press on regardless.

It takes lot of patience, time and stamina to stay on pitch to make 304 runs at any level of cricket. I would like to see who is this guy.

Posted by: Zia at July 20, 2007 3:43 PM

This guy works in my office and I can assure that he has tremendous talent. Pakistan cricket board has actually approached him for signing a new contract. He may become a future star at international level.

Posted by: Ali at July 20, 2007 8:30 PM

I am not aware of any such news from Pakistan Board, otherwise it must have been in Pakistani News papers. So far I know the last comments from Zia sounds Bogus. Lets stay on the point and congratulate this fellow on this event no matter how big or small it is.

Posted by: Naeem Pyara at July 21, 2007 1:15 AM

Well that's some wicked score. I've never heard
someone makin a 100 in Canada. This guy should get a chance to play some good cricket...

our league is called the commonweath cricket asociasion on toronto

Posted by: unknown at July 23, 2007 7:04 PM

i know he made 304 but if u get ten or more chances obviously you will make this much score. but the ground tell u the truth its really fast outfield let c how he play against us next week.

Posted by: Rob Newstead at July 23, 2007 7:41 PM

Wow Ranjit Ratnayake - Your standards must be pretty high when you say "no individual player was able to take command of the game completely "
I guess 175 by Gibbs, 164 by Ponting and 92 by Smith" is not "taking control" in your eyes. Although I agree 304 is an awesome feat in ANY type of cricket, you cannot ever compare the T & D to a ODI between 2 of the top cricket nations.

Posted by: Nasir Dar at July 24, 2007 3:33 PM

I anybody says to make a 100, 200, or 300 runs is a joke,^[doesnt matter what kind of cricket], his knowledge for cricket is zero. I made some fifties on college as a opner,I know to make 300runs in any type of cricket is marvellous. well done Irfan.

Posted by: Zia at July 24, 2007 4:27 PM

Irfan has been congratulated by President of Canadian Cricket Board for this landmark. We look forward for to see his other tonnes in future. Good Luck Irfan.

In Cricket it’s all about the character a Cricketer shows on field. As Batsman, bowler or fielder if you are not enjoying the game, or your opponent are not fighting hard to get you out, then the charm is only one sided. From Comments of this Mr, "Unknown" it seems like the other side had lost their heart in game. So far 300 is concern yep it sounds very disturbing if I am a scorer....lol …and very insulting if I am in opposite team playing against Irfan.....will see what this dude will bring in near future matches. ....Hi can anyone please post the Direct link to this league's site where I can check Irfan's scores.

Posted by: Nick at July 25, 2007 1:02 PM

I think that 304 is an excellent achievement, but im very disappointed that our (canada's) level of interest in cricket is so limited. maybe this feller could spark some interest?
or is this naive of me to think that cricket will ever take off in the great land of canada, and will always play a second fiddle to baseball, gridiron, etc?

Posted by: Nadeem at July 27, 2007 5:35 AM

i play on the same team as Irfan bhai fortunately .. i have a feeling , he doesnt really like me though lol ..but i missed that innings... wasnt playing that day.. damn

Posted by: James Aboloua at July 31, 2007 1:32 AM

Hi , I am from Toronto & I am surprised this innings got coverage on Cricinfo blog but not a single line in local media.....that shows how strong is Cricket community and its future in Canada....Sad very Sad.

Posted by: Mark Anthony at July 31, 2007 1:35 AM

Well i must say that scoring 300 is a big thing... it's not easy to stay there and play the whole 50 overs, but you must understand that the Canadian Commonwealth Cricket Association of Toronto is that worst league in Toronto. The boundary lines are not set, only estimation. Most of all, their umpires are even worst. You can see the comments on the umpire on the match review. http://www.cricketstar.net/ccat/index.jsp?form=matchrev&r=matchrev&game_number=506&season_id=2007
There has been been more than ONE UMPIRE. It's always one umpire for the whole 50 overs.

Posted by: Ashley Jones at August 7, 2007 9:14 PM

Wow...great score, but seriously was there any fielder in ground....lol

Posted by: Ahmad Khan at August 9, 2007 3:42 PM

I am not sure how good cricket is in Canada, because most of Canadian Cricket Team players to me look like Actors from South Indian Movies who need to work hard on their fitness, but 304 for sure is not a joke.

Posted by: jamal kawasi at August 15, 2007 8:20 PM

Hmmm sounds good, but did any one in this blog saw this inning?

Posted by: Ali header at August 20, 2007 3:08 PM

Thats lot of wood man lot of wood. I am sure both sides must have enjoyed this game.By the way which level of cricket match this was in Canadian sector?

Posted by: Aisha Jilwar at August 29, 2007 7:07 PM

I saw this match. It was dominating and very controlled innings though I thought this guy will get attention from local cricket authorities which he never got as I expected.
