Kenya to host 2008 Afro-Asia Cup

Posted on 06/07/2007 in Kenya

Kenya is likely to host the next Afro-Asia Cup which will be held in June next year, the Asian Cricket Council has announced.

The hosting alternates between Africa and Asia and only time there is a gap in the international calendar in the next two years is in the second, third and fourth weeks of June 2008, hence the timing of the competition.

"The likely venue is Kenya where the facilities and weather would be ideal," Syed Ashraful Haq, the ACC chief executive, said. Money raised by the tournament is split 70% to the host association, 20% to the visitors and 10% to the Sightsavers charity.

The last major tournament hosted in Kenya was the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy but there were concerns raised at the time about the organisation and support from the local population. Given that the 2005 event was held in South Africa, the choice was between Zimbabwe and Kenya, and the deteriorating political and social situation in Zimbabwe made that to risky an option.

I think its a great idea.Kenya have good pitches and are a fast growing team.I hope the more of the big names don't miss out this year.

I hope they cancel this meaningless tournament. Or have it without an Official status...

The fact that Kenya is being considered as the venue is a great idea. But I feel this event lacks marketing. That is the main reason it fails to generate interest among viewers. The scheduling of this event is not given any priority and that is the reason for big names missing the tournament.

It is very nice to see, this tournament is conducted in Kenya. As all know that kenya is upcoming team, they must be Encouraged and they need funds to develop their talents.Hope this money from Afro Asian cup may fetch them that.

I can promise Kenya will be like the Old West Indian team with all good players.

Best Of Luck .

I think they can bring big players to Afro-Asia Cup by changing its format ,instead of playing 3 meaningless ODIs why don't they arrange three 20\20 matches with all the stars from both continent taking part good for game, great in case of money, that be best solution of this format more ppl can get interest in these games then

I think this tournament is a useless waste of time.

Why do they have to hold this tournament every year? Can't it be held once in two years. Before long people are going to get fed up of this.

Posted by: pravin at June 8, 2007 2:32 PM

It will be a crowd puller as there are lot of people from Asia in Kenya who always go to the grounds when teams from the sub continent come. they should play them day and night to attract more crowds.

What tournament are they gonna host? Oh the one that is currently on and nobody is watching despite having so many great players. Charity matches are better than the drab currently going on. ICC could give any match full status if it has money and their name. Losers !!!

Why do people have to be so ignorant. The only thing that this differs from other games is that it's between continental teams. It's for a good cause too, it's for the development of cricket in the respective continents beyond the test teams. It's no worse than all the extra matches that India plays over the minimum requirement, and what's the cause? The BCCI wants to get richer. ICC just gave this tournament ODI status to help out the two councils with their development of cricket in the two continents. Yes, this tournament has flaws but they should try to fix those, not stop the tournament. One thing the ICC could introduce for the moneymakers like these which are still for a good cause if to have ALL Star status, like in the NBA etc. People also needs to remember, before always taking low blows at the ICC, is that the money the ICC makes is put back into the game, they don't keep it, they are a nonprofit organization.

I Just wanna say that there should be only one ODI and it is very much true that a three ODI series was really a bogus idea. I think subcontinental teams must play Twenty20 games on regular basis because they are far behind in that format of game as compared to Australia and South Africa. So its good if they invest time and money in Twenty20.

Afro Asian cricket tournament should be a country wise tournament not just Asian team and African team. All the nations should participate which will create interest.

it a good tournament for Kenya and Zimbabwe as it a good experience for the players and the money they receive will be spent on cricket which is good for cricket as a game
