Matches more than money

Posted 12 hours, 28 minutes ago in Associates

Much is spoken about the expansion of the international game, and if, as expected, proposals for a significant increase in funding for the Associates is approved when the ICC meets in June, then their progress should be further boosted.

But cash and goodwill can only go so far. What is widely agreed is that to improve, the leading Associates need to play more, and against the elite top ten Full Member countries. And that is where the problems come.

A casual glance at the international schedule will show that the major countries are on an almost constant global tour. In part this is because of the requirements of the Future Tours Programme, but more often than not the large gaps in that schedule are filled with lucrative one-day tours or tournaments.

In an ideal world, there would be time for India or England to undertake ambassadorial tours to Kenya or the Netherlands. But given the choice between a lucrative three-match series against commercially attractive opposition containing star names or a trip to a cricketing outpost in Africa or Europe, it's not a contest.

Hong Kong chairman quits

Posted 4 days, 23 hours ago in Hong Kong

Confusion surrounds the sudden resignation of Clive Howard, the chairman of the Hong Kong Cricket Association (HKCA).

Howard quit with immediate effect in the middle of the week, but the brief statement from the board cited “family and work commitments”. However, a report in the South China Morning Press stated that he owed the HKCA around HK$210,000 (US$27,000)

"During his time as chairman, cricket developed significantly, with the introduction of the "Challenge League" for players not able to find places in teams competing in the regular Saturday and Sunday League competitions run by the HKCA and the setting up of a women's league competition,” Terry Smith, the board president, said. "He also played a significant part in developing the International Cricket Sixes into an event of true international stature.

"Given the scale of the activities now being undertaken by the Association, we are now considering the appointment of a CEO to support the chairman and executive committee and implement all aspects of association policy.”

Jersey look for Kirsten influence

Posted 6 days, 9 hours ago in Jersey

Some of Jersey’s top players over the last decade have a chance to demonstrate their skills and ability at a completely new level, on the world stage, when they host Division Five of the World Cricket League later this month.

Jersey’s squad benefits from a number of all-rounders whose fitness and stamina will be tested under the tournament itinerary - a demanding seven games in nine days.

Their principle allrounder, Ryan Driver – formerly of Lancashire and Warwickshire - has fulfilled the four-year ICC qualifying period enabling him to make his long-awaited debut for Jersey. Mat Hague, another allrounder, will welcome Driver’s support while he captains the side.

Tom Minty and Andy Dewhurst provide inspiration for the younger players
on the fringe of the squad, while at the other end of the age spectrum
Meeku Patidar and Bradley Vowden will bring vast experience and – in spite of their seniority - are two of the very finest and fittest fielders in the squad.

James Caunt, the wicketkeeper, also qualifies as supremely fit and is a
welcome new addition to the squad. He has been in Jersey for 12 years
but has now qualified to play for the team in ICC competitions
Sharing wicket-keeping duties is Bobby Minty who also possesses high
levels of natural fitness and is flexible enough to be used as a fielder too.

Jamie Brewster's attacking and powerful batting are a luxury that the
strength of this squad can afford and he can turn a match inside five
overs.

Peter Kirsten – the former South Africa batsman, and now Jersey’s coach - arrives this week and the squad and management are looking forward to his impact – particularly with the fielding.

Slow progress continues in China

Posted 1 week, 5 days ago in China

Shandong, the second-most populous province in China, has become the seventh region after Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Liaoning, Chongqing and Tianjin to officially take up cricket, according to a media release from the Asian Cricket Council.

“The Shandong people are well known for their good physical condition in China … the majority of rugby players are from Shandong,” Aminul Islam, the ACC’s development officer for China, said. With cricket being aligned with rugby in the multi-ball games administrative centre in China, the Chinese Cricket Association (CCA) felt a partnership between both bodies to make use of athletes all-year round would be ideal.

Immigrants making a pitch for cricket

Posted 1 week, 6 days ago in Canada

An interesting article in Canada’s Globe & Mail reports that the popularity of the game among immigrants is being stalled by the lack of pitches.

There are more players than the cricket grounds in Surrey can hold, forcing some Sunday matches to be held in school playgrounds … [it] has two cricket grounds and there is a growing demand for more. Hundreds of cricketers cannot play because of the shortage of grounds.
And the son of one immigrant reveals that his son has now taken up the game.

Ethnically South Asian, the junior Kumar was born and raised in Canada. He started playing cricket this year. He says the game is fun, but it also helps him connect to his Indian culture. "If I leave my own culture, the culture [will] die out," he said.

Canada set for Twenty20 boost

Posted 1 week, 6 days ago in Canada

Canada have joined the Twenty20 bandwagon and will host their first tournament in Toronto on May 17 and 18. Eight teams from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia will compete.

"In the light of what is happening in the IPL in India at the moment, what we are undertaking in Canada is a major step to restore this sport to its former glory which it enjoyed till ice hockey replaced it," the board's CEO Atul Ahuja said.

Ahuja was present at the launch of the IPL in Bangalore last month and said that the owners of the franchises had indicated a willingness to send teams to Canada. "All of them ... promised to send Twenty20 teams to Canada in the summer to help us groom players. We have a huge talent from the South Asian and Caribbean communities in Canada."

However, if they do, the sides are unlikely to bear much resemblance to those playing in the IPL at the moment and most of the high-profile players will be on international duty elsewhere.

Samurai swagger in genteel old game

Posted 2 weeks, 3 days ago in Japan

Japanese leg spinner Kenji Murata at Fuji Cricket Ground in Fuji © Mainichi Daily News
With the ICC World Cricket League Division Five set to take place in Jersey in May, the Mainichi Daily News has an interesting article on Japan’s preparations for the tournament.
Naoki Alex Miyaji typically opens the bowling for Japan, but that's not the only way the 29-year-old son of a Japanese father and Scottish mother bends his back on behalf of the game in this country. He's also the CEO of the Japan Cricket Association (JCA), an NPO entrusted with the task of promoting the world's second-most popular participation sport in a land where, for the majority, Cricket is the name of a fashion label.

Despite the iconic surroundings of the playing headquarters at the foot of the country's most sacred peak and bullet trains hurtling past at regular intervals, Fuji Cricket Ground is also symbolic of the state of the game's status in Japan. Its two pitches are among no more than a handful found throughout the entire country. And they're located about 150 kilometers from the center of Tokyo, making a trip there a costly effort in terms of both time and money, an even greater drain considering the core of the game here revolves around university student players.

Nonetheless, Japanese cricket is making inroads. Miyaji estimates there are about 2,000 senior and junior cricket players in competitions that include expatriate-centered and university leagues. JCA has branches in Kanto, Kansai, Hokkaido and Shikoku. Nationwide, almost 6,000 boys and girls have been taught about the sport.

Bruce Patterson retires

Bruce Patterson is one of only two players to have totalled more than 4000 runs for Scotland © Getty Images

Bruce Patterson, one of Scotland's leading run-scorers, has announced his retirement from the game aged 43.

"Unless there is a goal it is difficult to get motivated for club cricket and it's a few years since I last played for Scotland. I've had a fantastic career and would like to thank everyone who has helped me along the way.

"If anyone had told me as a 15 year-old that I'd end up with 124 caps I'd have said no chance.

"I was more of a manufactured player than a natural but at least I can say I made the most of my ability."

Patterson famously hit the first ball ever faced by a Scot in a World Cup for four when Scotland lined-up against Australia at a packed New Road, Worcester, in 1999.

However, the highlight of his career came ten years earlier when he scored 70 against Allan Border's Australian side in front of 5,000 fans at Hamilton Crescent.

ICC Americas sink Kenya

Kenya, tipped by some as one of the teams to watch, were easily beaten by an ICC Americas team in the first round of the Clico International Under-15 Championship. Set a modest 134 to win, ICC Americas eased to a six-wicket win with more than 13 overs to spare.

Kenya won the toss but never got their innings going and limped to 133. Bermuda’s Joshua Gilbert, who had taken 2 for 11 with his offspin, played the anchor innings with an unbeaten 43 off 97 balls, twice being dropped, but that was not enough to win him the Man-of-the-Match award which went to Nitisj Kumar who took 3 for 14.

In the day’s other game, Pakistan beat Ireland by eight wickets to book a semi-final against Bangladesh while ICC Americas will play West Indies. Ireland managed only 99 off 43.3 overs, Usman Qadir, the son of the legendary Abdul Qadir, taking 3 for 22, a score Pakistan passed in 20.5 overs.

Etihad beat favourites in Phuket Sixes

Posted 3 weeks, 4 days ago in Cricket Sixes

The plot for finals day became much clearer on day three of the Phuket International Cricket Sixes, as Leeming Spartans, Etihad Airways and Bahrain Camels eased through to the Cup semi-finals.

23 teams from eleven countries are competing for honours at this fifth annual Phuket Sixes, winner of the ICC Global Award for cricket development.

Etihad had a wonderful day today, beating both Corner Tigers of Pakistan and one of the form teams, Lamma CC of Hong Kong. The Tigers were restricted to a meagre 60 against the pumped-up Airways, with only Imran Idrees making his mark with a classy 35 not out. Etihad then knocked off the total without losing a wicket with 4 balls to spare, Azam retiring on 30 and Sanket – the dangerous left-hander - not out on 18. Then Etihad defeated Lamma CC, knocking off a challenging target of 79 to win with both Azam and Sanket again getting in the runs. Sher Lama had retired on 30 not out for the Hong Kong outfit. Lamma later defeated Corner Tigers to keep their hope alive of a place in the semi finals Sunday.

In Plate action The Entertainers faced the biggest challenge of the day as they chased the Uni Wanderers total of 105, the biggest score of the day. They gave it their all, but ran out of overs still 34 runs short of the target. Both Mark Parry and Trevor Higgins had retired for the Wanderers, each making an unbeaten 31.

The Plate semi-finals will now be played by Uni Wanderers, Weraroa CC from New Zealand, Toorak Prahan CC of Melbourne and the Entertainers as the doctors of the Delhi Medical Association and the Calcutta Old Boys both missed the cut.

The Bowl and Spoon divisions are still open with Wild Men from Borneo looking good in the Bowl and Gauhati Town from India playing well in the Spoon.

An entertaining Twenty20 match was won on Friday night by the Trevor Chappell XI over Kenny Jackson's World XI at the Karon Stadium. A raucous crowd applauded and barracked for three hours as twenty two of the best players in the tournament battled for pride and for charity under floodlights in what was a wonderfully atmospheric evening.

Finals Day gets underway at 9.15am with a Cup fixture featuring the Liquid Lounge Lizards and Calcutta Cricket & Football Club in what will be a decider for the final place in the Cup semi-finals.

Colin Siller named Fiji coach

Colin Siller, a former Scotland league cricketer, has been named as Fiji's new coach.

He said: "It is a great honour to have been handed a head coach's role. I am really looking forward to working with the young talent as well as getting to know the people."

Ghana stroll into final against Swaziland

Posted 3 weeks, 4 days ago in World Cricket League

Ghana will play Swaziland in the final of the ICC World Cricket League Africa Region Division Three.

Ghana had the easiest match, thrashing Rwanda by eight wickets with more than 39 overs in hand. Rwanda were bowled out for 23 in 11.1 overs, but that represented a recovery after they found themselves 13 for 8. Abdul-Karim Sumaila (4 for 11) and Isaac Aboagye (6 for 9) bowled unchanged throughout, while extras (9) contributed more than any individual batsman. Ghana lost both their openers in easing home.

Swaziland had to work harder, and survived a mini collapse within sight of the finishing line, before overcoming Sierra Leone by four wickets with 20 overs to spare in the battle of the group winners. Sierra Leone managed 116 thanks to an eighth-wicket stand of 50 which bailed them out from 50 for 7. Joseph Wright (5 for 17) was the man who blew away the top order. Swaziland were wobbling on 27 for 3 but Wright (48) and Abdulazis Patel (35*) put on 73 for the fourth wicket, and strikes from Lansana Lamin (4 for 19) came too late.

Lesotho lost to a South African Invitation XI by seven wickets in the fifth-place play-off.

Corner Tigers from Pakistan, the former champions, performed well enough in their first two matches to feature in the Cup competition again this year. Bahrain Camels and Etihad, new to the Phuket Sixes this year, also made the cut.

Six teams will compete for the Plate which includes both New Zealand sides. The doctors from the Delhi Medical Association will also fight it out for Plate silverware.

Trevor Chappell stars in Phuket Sixes

Posted 3 weeks, 6 days ago in Phuket

Mark Burns

Glorious sunshine greeted the teams on day one of the Phuket International Cricket Sixes being played at Karon Stadium, Phuket. In the first match of the day were the new Kiwi newcomers to the Phuket Sixes, Wearoa and the Entertainers. Weraroa looked handy as they posted a useful total of 74, with Scott Rogers notching 24. In reply the Entertainers fell nine runs short with Stu Davenport top-scoring on 32 not out.

Trevor Chappell, the former Australia batsman and regular visitor to Phuket, was in action on the first day for Lamma CC (Hong Kong) who were matched up against the Perth Postels. This match was played after a sudden deluge of rain had forced play to be suspended for around an hour. Chappell was in exceptional form with the bat, stroking a breezy 31 not out barely breaking into a sweat. Paul Hutchinson of Lamma also retired with 32, Lamma posting a useful total of 72 in a reduced-overs match. Perth Postels had little answer to the Lamma total, although they'll be buoyed by the performance of Brian Shaw who scored 29 not out. Lamma, who were rocked by a back injury to Paul Hutchinson during the match, won by 18 runs.

Another new side to the Phuket Sixes, the Delhi Medical Association (every player being a doctor of medicine) were pipped to the post by the CBB Postels. Dr Shashi was the top performer for the medicine men with 24 runs to his name, but the CBB'ers, no strangers to this short form of the game won the match with an over to spare, Kenny Jackson retiring with 32 not out.

The scheduled thirteen matches were played during the day despite the early rain with play finishing on time at 5.30pm.

Matches get underway again at 9.15 on Friday morning, with the Charity Twenty 20 match getting underway under floodlights at 6.30pm. The tournament runs until finals day on Sunday 20th.

Entry for spectators is free, all are welcome to come and enjoy the cricket action and atmosphere. Food and drinks are available at the ground.

Nigeria win North West African Championships

Posted 4 weeks, 1 day ago in Nigeria

Nigeria have won the second North West African Championships following a narrow one-wicket win over their arch-rivals, Sierra Leone, in the final match of the five-nation tournament in Lagos on Thursday.

Endurance Ofem, named Player of the Series, guided Nigeria home with 39 as Nigeria overhauled Sierra Leone's 142, despite Lansana Lamin's 4 for 20 from his 10 overs. Ofem also scored the tournament's only century.

Hopes the tournament will expand past its British Commonwealth roots were dashed for this year by the withdrawal of Cameroon and Morocco. Eventually it is intended to include Egypt and Libya.

It was a typical tournament of West African national teams with the usual finishing order of Nigeria first, Sierra Leone second, Ghana finishing third and Gambia fourth.

Mali, the former French colony, was the fifth team, clearly still in its learning phase, with team totals of 12, 24, 151 and 15.

Forget Twenty20: try Five-Five

Posted on 04/12/2008 in Bermuda

Hot on the heels of their new Twenty20 competition, Bermuda have launched a new tournament: Five-Five.

The six-a-side tournament is modelled on the famous Hong Kong sixes and will feature eight teams - St. David's, St. George's, Flatt's, Bailey's Bay, Cleveland, PHC, Devonshire Rec and Social Club.

There will be two groups of four competing in a round robin format, semi-finals and a final all played in a single day - April 19.

"This is the ultimate in entertainment," said Cann who hopes to make the tournament an annual event, with every team in Bermuda ultimately involved.

But he said it was starting off on a small scale, with a handful of sponsors including Barritts and Esso Tigermart.

"I want to build it up gradually. You couldn't have a better facility than the home of cricket at St. David's and it's going to be a real entertaining day.

"It's non-stop cricket from 9am until 6pm at night."

The Bermuda Sun has the full story.

Suriname stun dire Bahamas

Troy Dudnauth on his way to 5 for 21 against Bahamas © Cricinfo
Suriname provided a major upset on the final day of the ICC Americas Division 2 Championship, not only beating odds-on favourites Bahamas but also leapfrogging them to the title and promotion to Division One.

On the eve of the match, we wrote that “Suriname will need an extraordinarily comprehensive win to have any chance of overtaking the Bahamas”, and that’s just what happened. Needing only 83 to avoid being pipped to the title on net run rate, Bahamas were utterly woeful as they crashed to 57 all out and a thumping 146-run defeat.

Bahamas continue to set the pace

Posted on 04/06/2008 in World Cricket League Americas Division

On day two of the ICC Americas WCL Division Two Championship, Bahamas virtually ensured they would claim the title and promotion to the Americas Division One tournament later in the year, when they beat a spirited Panama by six wickets.

Strong favourites at the outset, Bahamas were made to work hard by the organised Panama outfit, and there were moments throughout the contest when Panama had a chance.

After electing to bat first at Snellen Park, Panama made a confident start and by the 32nd over were in a strong position at 141 for 3. Openers Soyab Chohan (30) and Nilesh Bhakta (37) added 52, and a total of 250 was on the cards. However the introduction of Jonathan Barry turned the innings around. With his second ball he removed Irfan Tarajia (27) and proceeded to wreck the middle and lower order, finishing with outstanding figures of 5 for 14 from four overs as Panama lost their last seven wickets for 13.

Panama and Bahamas find form

Posted on 04/05/2008 in World Cricket League Americas Division

On the first day in the ICC Americas WCL Division Two Championship, taking place in Paramaribo, Suriname, the hosts failed in an exciting run-chase to overcome a tidy Panama side, while strong pre-tournament favourites Bahamas hammered the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Playing on the impressive new Owru Kul oval, Suriname won the toss and looked to have made the best of the decision by reducing Panama to 26 for 3 after deciding to bowl. However man of the match Irfan Tarajia put up stubborn resistance while mixing caution and aggression, to register the first century of the tournament. Tarajia made 102 off 147 balls, including seven fours and seven sixes.

North West African Championships

Posted on 04/04/2008 in Africa

Tony Munro

One of the oldest running (give or take the odd year) tournament in international cricket starts this weekend when five countries contest the North West African Championships in Lagos, Nigeria.

The traditional entrants, Gambia, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, all members of the British Commonwealth, have taken part in the old West African Championships since the 1960s.
Last year Mali and Morocco became the first former French territories to compete, (in Banjul, Gambia), and the tournament became the North West African Championships.

Mali is back, Morocco is not, and plans for Cameroon to debut this year have been scuppered.

Also returning this year are 12 of the 14 members of the successful Nigerian team, the only changes forced by work commitments. The five teams will contest a round-robin, with the winner decided on win-loss record.

Ghana and Sierra Leone are regarded as Nigeria's main threats.

Tanzania: East African Tournament

Posted on 04/03/2008 in Tanzania

From 8th to 11th Dec 2007 Cricket Kenya hosted the U15 boys and women’s open tournament in Nairobi, under the umbrella of Africa Cricket Association (ACA). The Tanzanian U15 boys team under the Development coach Riziki Kiseto, performed well, in spite of losing all their games. The big physical builds of the Ugandan, Kenyan and Rwandese U15 players over shadowed the tiny Tanzanian players forcing them to play their games in a shell.

It was indeed a good experience for all the East African youths that participated in this tournament who also got the opportunity to make new friends from the neighbouring countries through the game of cricket at a tender age.

The Tanzanian women’s team under the Development coach Hamisi Abadalla, became runners up in the women’s category comprising of teams from Uganda, Tanzania and the host Kenya. Tanzania women’s team failed to defend its championship title for the seventh consecutive year. This was the first time after six years that the Ugandan side managed to win over the Tanzania.
