March 14th
The players are in the gym at 7am and then a pool session to regenerate the body. Mushy [Mushtaq Ahmed] and I meet in the morning to discuss where and what we need to do. It is important to reflect on one’s own performance. The Word Cup is about performance and losing leads to retrospection. After chatting, we have coffee with Inzamam and discuss the way forward. We decide that after practice tomorrow we will have a quiet chat with all the players.
March 15th
Wow what a game between Zimbabwe and Ireland. While we did not need reminding, we saw a very committed Ireland side. Zimbabwe were gutted that they did not beat Ireland when they had the game by the throat. All credit to Ireland for sticking to there task. We had practice at the Kensington Oval [in Barbados], only ten minutes from the ground. We also instituted our chats although Mushy did not join us as he took a blow to the nose, broke it and had a nasty cut while trying to field a ball on a shocking outfield.
In the evening I went out for supper with the leader of the Drum ensemble who played at the opening ceremony. Very interesting! We went to Courtney Walsh’s restaurant and bar just down the road, had some great food and a pleasant evening.
March 16th
We netted at the Kensington Oval and then to Sabina Park for fielding practice, which formed our final preparations for tomorrow’s game. I had lunch with Danish [Kaneria] next to the pool and then went back to the room to catch up with the diary, a couple of articles and our final preparations for the team meeting this evening. We are aware of the importance not just of this game, but both [the remaining games] and are very determined to do well. We are also very disappointed by the articles appearing in our press in Pakistan trying to disrupt the team spirit and would ask those who read this to ignore the drivel!

Dear Bob,
Most of us support our team to the hilt. It's just that after lots of inconsistent performances one begins to question the strategy of the team that is not giving the results we know it can achive. I would like to say though that this is the World Cup and we haev faith, we believe that you guys can bring home the trophy, i know the team and you and inzi personally are taking a lot of flak but like you said yourself just ignore it all and focus on your training. Inshallah we will be the surprise winners of this tournament and then we can have a go at the critics!

Hi Bob,
Please, please send this message across to all the players:
Forget the media, we don't care what they say, we are very supportive of the team. We wont lose hope and we have our complete faith in the team. This is the real voice of Pakistan. Not fabricated junk the media want to stick to.

It looks like that you guys are having fun there. One day at a Lebanese restaurant and other day Courtney Walsh. I want to visit Jamaica now (of course after the World Cup, as I can't see Pakistan losing so badly). One thing I guarantee you is that with this sort of fun agenda, the team is going to lose against minnows now. If you notice, the tie happened for a reason. That is that. Pakistan is going to lose one game and they are out. Wow, what preparation.

If I were you, I wouldn't discard those articles but infact learn from advices of others. I personally think, Inzimam should step up to plate and act brave enough to accept responsibility for their losses like a true captain and leader. Our team need soe serious leadership and guidance along with a tons of motivation and support for Pakistani people. Please Please Please give Rana a much deserved rest for the remainin world cup.

Did someone say the game against Ireland is going to be a tough one for Pakistan?
How about the 6 games in the super 8s if we somehow manage to beat the super Irish and even the great Zimbabweans?
Or, why even bother going to the super 8s...
Unbelievable negativity

Respected Bob,
The press of Pakistan or elsewhere is writing the same stories about our cricket but I am not someone who is bogged and expect same with you guys. The only way to keep them silent is to show performance on the field. Its actually very pleasing to read these notes as it just tells us the prep and the level of intensity.I hope the morale will boost after winning the next game and secondly due to the comback of enthusiastic afridi in the game after so o for it.
Best of Luck
reagrds,
Basit

While I do believe that Pakistan was below par against the West Indies, however, we must remember that this is team without 3 of their regular ODI players. Yet, for the 45 overs against the West Indies, we were superb in the field.
I think for the game against Ireland, Inzamam should come at 4 and Yousuf at 3 while Younis must drop down to 5 in the order.
As for the team changes, I believe, we need to some how play an Allrounder at number 8 (Afridi from the Zimbabwe game onwards) at the expense of either Kaneria or Rana Naved.
As for the Media Role, it looks like a lobby (PCB supported one) want to see Pakistan loose badly in this world cup so that they can bring their own set of people to the Pakistan Cricket. (Coach and Players)
Ignore the media, we trust and fully back our team and InshaAllah, we will win the World Cup. But go step by step.
All the Best.

Dear Bob, i hope this time they will play with better strategy and much responsibility.I think every shoulder in this team should bear the responsibility rather than just captain and the coach. It is good that they are going to gym, doing practices but they need some long discussions so that during the play they do not forget their target. As on 13th they were looking totally blank infact everyone other than Shoaib Malik(play well and keep smiling). And we hope not to see Rana in today's match (if inclusion is based on performances). One more thing i think they need to play some video games (maybe their minds get strong in making step by step strategy specially if they need to beat Super 8 teams). I wish and pray for Pakistan Team. Good Luck!

Pakistan team needs to ignore the surrounding innuendo in Carribean and what people are saying in press whether in Pakistan or anywhere else... they need to focus and give the best effort they possibly can to win this mega event.

I hope u follow a media blockout policy for the players. They don't need their confidence deflated any further.
Bob you must insist that all this fiasco about nto speaking english in teh name of helping tourism to pakistan is stopped. Let the players speak their mind at press conferences in any language.
It's hard enough to check your shots on the field, add to that worrying about speaking the right language!!

Is the team spirit so fickle as that? Are a few articles all it takes to 'disrupt' it?
After the loss in the opening game, and that yet again coming as a result of the indiscretion of our batsmen, a bit of bad press could hardly have come as a surprise.
This was the only clash between two test nations in our group, 'the game to win', and to have our batting surrender so meekly in the face of what was widely regarded as a gettable total was very disappointing.
But on the other hand, one can't afford to be governed by negative thought patterns. I would have loved to have seen Pakistan sustain their initially outstanding fielding for the entire length of fifty overs. The late onslaught may have been prevented by more consistent bowling inthe block hole, and the use of bouncers and slower balls only as a surprise element, so as to keep the batsmen guessing, but then again, when someone like Smith is wielding the willow on his day, anything can happen.
however, that doesn't account for Imran Nazir nicking a swinging rank half volley, or Younas Khan's ludicrous pullshot, or hafiz's head rush, and so on and so forth.
I also wonder on what basis the team targets a particular bowler, and whether or not our players think enough on their feet in that respect. Smith, for instance, was the obvious choice for the bowler to target, and the fact that he was hitting good areas and troubling our batsmen more than some of the other WI bowlers did nothing to change that, eventually our big guns fell to his probing medium pace. I think that in ODI cricket, every cricketer is an unknown quantity, and should be laregely isolated from his past endeavors during a match. Instead, what should be dealt with, is what he has to offer on the day.
In any case, I believe that we have an excellent ODI side, and openers + running between the wickets aside, we have our other bases decently covered. My best wishes to the Pakistani team and support staff, I hope to see us qualify past the super 8s.

Someone might prefer a column writing coach of the cricket team though i do not favor it.I doubt Bob if you would not have been coaching the Pakistani side i doubt we would have been that interested in reading your column. To me you are taking advantage of your position, which professionally does not look nice.
Another thing is by reading your diary i am sorry to say that i am unable to feel any intensity in the work load that you guys have after the game. And that lack of intensity "OFF" the field is also very apparent "ON" the field.

Our big problem is the openers.we have tried to get some thing special from the openers. we expect dashing start from them. i think we should have gone for some steady starts. we have normaly pushed up the run rates at the end of the inings. Players like yasir hameed are best suited for that. hafeez has been sticking around for to long now...

Mr. Woolmer,
A lot of us would really appreciate if you or any of the Pakistan's Cricket Team or Board Members don't try to explain what happened against Ireland. We saw it live so we don't need no phony explanations.
Thanking you in advance for your consideration in this regard.
