The Champions Trophy hasn’t had many runs, but it has had something more precious: upsets. South Africa fell to New Zealand, and now Australia have gone down to West Indies.
The Aussies showed two unexpected weaknesses. After a strong start with the ball, they couldn’t finish off the West Indian top order. The killer instinct was missing. Glenn McGrath, still shaking off the rust and trundling in as third seamer, was anodyne, and while other teams’ spinners have flourished, Australia’s gave Brian Lara and Runako Morton no headaches.
When they batted, the Aussies seemed unsure how to play it, as if they didn’t know whether 234 was a good score on this strange and tricky pitch. By not knowing, they ensured that it was. Adam Gilchrist adjusted his game manfully, gritting his way out of trouble. He deserved to finish on the winning side, but only Michael Clarke gave him much support. The Aussies’ new batting order backfired, with Shane Watson making an early misjudgement and Mike Hussey only reaching the middle in the 42nd over. Watson may well turn out to be the right man to open, but Hussey is surely too low at number seven.
But mainly it was a case of West Indies playing out of their skins. They had so many injuries and illnesses, they had to field a 12th man from outside the squad - Vinayak Samant, the former Mumbai first-class cricketer, who is 34, still actively in cricket, and vice-captain of the Cricket Club of India team - for all of two balls, yet a stand-in captain, Ramnaresh Sarwan, and a junior bowler, Jerome Taylor, combined to slay the giant. The Aussies like to say that it should take a great performance to beat them and Taylor, who had sweat pouring off him yet stayed ice-cool, produced one.
The Aussies were more vulnerable than usual, but England can’t take much comfort from it. For one thing, Australia now need a win on Saturday as badly as England. For another, West Indies are no longer the weakest link in the group. England are.

Great win by WI - credit to team. Special tribute to Taylor and Sarwan for his brilliant captaincy - bowling changes and field placings.
tournament now heating up - three upsets - Nz def SA, Pak def SL now the big one WI def Aus..
the end is nigh for the aussies..!

Things are getting pretty interesting in this group. Baring England, the other 3 teams have an equal chance of qualifying.
On an another note. The English columnists/cricketers talk of winning the Ashes again. This seriously calls for a reality check. The Ashes result is a foregone conclusion. A good series would be England vs W.I.

Its only a matter of time before the West Indies reach the top, regardless of what he critics say and the excuses others make, its not helping the West Indies have a mission and a purpose in mind and a Strong leader in Bran Lara reminding them confidence is the key, there is no one individual in this group no longer but a young team coming in to its own with the ability and talent to beat the best in the world.

Australia has been the greatest team in the history of cricket and there is no doubt about that. Just like great empires and dynasties fall, the end has come for Australia. I salute them for their great achievements in the past few years but they have lost their killer instincts. There roaring tigers are getting old and when a lion gets, they loose there killer instinct. Great job West Indies!!!!

Judging on what happens to Australia everytime they play Champions trophy, maybe the World Cup should be renamed Champions Trophy (or Champions World Cup) so that the Aussies lose that as well.
Personally, I don't see Australia winning any match this time around. What a blow this could be to their morale and good for England.
This is take out time, boys, get'em (Aussies).

Rightly said that Aussies are no longer unbeateable probably because they must have become a little overconfident that they can bounce back under pressure.... Surely McGrath needs to awaken his killer instinct cause it looks like he just bowls his quota or even less and just gives away at around 4-4.5 runs per over but that ain't enough, he needs 2 aim for wickets othewise u have got Johnson, Tait, Gillespie and Clark who deserve a spot in the team...
Posted by: vineet at October 18, 2006 6:15 PM
West Indies can beat any team on their day...They will continue to posess this ablility till Brain Charles Lara is there...In last 10 matches (WI VS AUS) WI has won 5 and in all those wins brain played major role with bat.
Posted by: Hassan Haroon at October 18, 2006 6:16 PM
The Aussie players were seen to be pushing and swearing, when put under the cosh by the Windies. Everytime they are pushed into a corner they wilt under pressure and resort to unsporting actions. They need to learn how to lose gracefully.

With Pakistan beating Sri Lanka, West Indies edging out Australia and New Zealand breakdancing all over South Africa, all that was needed for England to get over India and all the picks for the first round of matches would've gone out the window.
After a dull and lifeless tournament in England and a damp squib in Sri Lanka, the Champions Trophy is finally starting to feel like it should, and like it did during the days of hosting in Bangladesh and Kenya.
Get geared up for Round 2, because Round 1 definately went to the underdogs, all of a sudden, it looks like the scrawny half-starved mangy mutts wandering the street just might have more fight in them then the pure-bred greyhounds.
As the saying goes, "every dog has it's day", and we could be in for a few more over the next couple.

Fantastic victory for the West Indies. They absolutely deserved this win. Everyone in the WI team was playing rough and tough game as the Aussies.
As for AUS, they have to beat England to stay in the competition. Let us see if England can stop desperate Aussies on Saturday.
Posted by: Chirag at October 18, 2006 6:18 PM
I would say it's a great win for West Indies and Cricket itself. The champion's trophy just got more interesting. West Indies showed that if you have guts and are willing to hang on till the last ball, then Ausies are not invincibles. Latter point was made by Rahul Dravid before the beginning of the DLF cup last month although his team never implemented that.
Also, it's hard to predict who will make into semies as each team has equal chance now. One thing that is predictable is that we are all in for a treat in coming weeks by some quality cricket.
Posted by: Senthil at October 18, 2006 6:18 PM
WI have really shown what it takes to beat a gr8 team in an ODI - play to your potential. Yday Lara commented that it doesn't always happen that the smart team wins, but the team that plays smartly wins....well, it happened today....
The verdict sums up exactly what happened on the turf today - Aussies unusually had no clue whether the target was too high or too low and made a mess of it. Playing Hussey at way down the order was stupidity, but Aussies have always had this problem of plenty in terms of talent and it does backfire at times!!! England & India are not in the best of forms, so Aus shd reach semis even from here - provided they play as they usually do, but an interesting series of good matches is on the cards.....

In these hot and humid conditions on testing pitches which are not that batting friendly, the gap between australia and other teams is not that big.
Most of the teams have good spinners in their ranks who can trouble sides with ball not coming to the bat as batsmen would have liked.
As pakistan were in the field to prove a point on tuesday, westindies had the same feelings, they wanted to show that their performance against srilanka was taken seriously by them and they want to advance in this tournament for next stage.
Posted by: Tamim Mostafa at October 18, 2006 6:21 PM
I think this group is open for anybody...it all depends on how well the teams can adjust themselves to the pitch condition and works out a proper gameplan...funny things are happening...and i think we have plenty more to come!..:)

Congratulations to the W.I., it was a good all round effort, the main aspect was self belief, and the ability to play with pride for your country. It was great seeing Jerome Taylor getting a hat-trick, right after the batsman stuck out his elbow at him, on his way back down the pitch. His way of dealing with this was excellent and was reminisent of the greats of an era past...... simply let the ball do the talking.Keep it up guys !!!!!

CONSISTENCY! CONSISTENCY! CONSISTENCY!
That is what differentiates champions from ordinary teams. WestIndies pulled off an upset, they played well as a team but will they manage to perform as consistently as Australia.... only time can tell.

Congratulations Lara, Sarwan and everyone in WI team. The young team, although inconsistent, has shown talent by performances like this and in DLF Cup. They need to get into a winning habit and between Lara, Sarwan and Chanderpaul establish a robust middle order that has been their failing. The partnership between Lara and Morton should serve as an example of fighting qualities and the will to establish such partnerships is needed. Also it is encouraging that Taylor is becoming more accurate and a force to reckon with. Fidel and Taylor can form spearhead of a decent pace attack.
Posted by: Douglas Doeman at October 18, 2006 6:27 PM
Great game for the Windies! They bowled brilliantly, epecially Jerome Taylor with his hat-trick and suport from Bradshaw, Bravo, Gayle and others. The batting perfomances of Man of the Match Morton and Lara was superb. Great application of technique and patience on a difficult track.
While credit goes to the Windies, I believe the Aussies could have lifted their game. Only Gilchrist really applied himself and showed that batting, even on the most difficult track, can be possible if you apply yourself. Hope they do much better in their up coming games.

The West Indies win leaves Group A wide open now. The team that Australia are, they will try to come back strongly in their next two matches and force their way into the semis. India have a task on hand as they will be meeting the two better teams of this group in the upcoming matches and will need to put up two stirring performances to qualify comfortably. As far as England are concerned, I find them too obsessed with the upcoming Ashes and they would only be happy to finish this tournament as early as possible and move over to the Ashes.

Tim:
Don't you think all the losses matter to the good teams? I understand you are writing this article from the Ashes point of view. But how about enjoying a good game of cricket between Aussies, the far superior team and WI, a true under-dog but can become a top one. I am really proud of the sub-continental cricket supporters for the simple fact that they enjoy cricket regardless of who plays even under hostile conditions in the stadiums. Contrast that to....well never mind. Thanks.

Australia were not the greatest team in the history of cricket. West Indies of twenty years ago were better.
You saw how Ponting's team fell apart when facing a good pace attack in England. Imagine the WI Pace battery, everyone better than the bowlers in England having a go at them. Not to mention world class batsman like Viv Richards (which Eng lacks, though a couple could eventually become world class).
No, Australia were not the greatest team of all time. They weren't even the greatest Australian team of all time. The 1948 Invincibles team led by Don Bradman were better, as Australians.
And right before South Africa were banned from cricket, that side would likely have given this Australia side a run for its money too.
In any case, we will know if the reign has ended if Aussies start losing Test series. Its irrelevent what happens in ODI's. You can't read too much into one day games, they don't really matter. Even Bangladesh have beaten Australia in a one day match, it doesn't mean anything aside from figuring out which side had a good day.
Posted by: Aditya Kumar at October 18, 2006 6:29 PM
The West Indies were, at times, sloppy in the field and as rightly said by the author, Gilly needed to be in the winning side, for the quality of his innings demanded that. But that is Cricket and Australia has been at the receiving end which, otherwise, would have made this a routine Australia vs any team encounter that usually tend to be boring. Australia had started to make cricket boring and we needed something like this!
Posted by: Surin at October 18, 2006 6:30 PM

Great win guys. You can achieve once you believe in your abilities.Well done Taylor. You have began to repay Lara's confidence in you.

Kudos to the West Indian team. Great play against the Australians. They are playing good cricket now. Good team work!
Let us all remember that despite the loss, Australia remain the world champion. Someone else has to win it all in 2007 to take the crown away from them. Till that time, Australia still reigns supreme, despite a few losses.
Having said that does England have enough punch and oomph to eliminate Australia from the Champions Trophy! I am sure that will set the tone for their Ashes Series.
Go England!

Amazing Victory!!! West-Indies have been pushing Aussies in the past month or so from Malaysia. Finally they got thru them. On any given day all this big teams are capable of upsetting others. NZ beat SA, Pak beat SL and WI beat Aus! Is there any technical-flaw in Ponting & Co. Lara is a class act, any surface, any country, just like Sachin is! Only the masters thrieve in tough pitches and conditions. It seems now India is in a tough pool:) 250 seems like a safe target if you have the bowling-fire-power and good fielding to back-up. Way to go Champions-Trophy. It's bringing out the Champions for all to see. Happy Diwali!!!!

Good win by the West Indies....The Champions Trophy needs it. Sarwan was good as stand in captain, and Morton looks good. They need to carry on, they remain so unpredictable, they will get bowled out for 80 and then slay the Australian giant. Now when they slay the Australian giant, lets hope they not mess it up against a lesser team. Damn right...keep it up!! I am worried about Wavel Hinds, he looks out of sorts, in the field and with the bat, Mortons 90 has almost put him out, with the return of Chanderpaul coming through.

ya whatever Aus dint play upto their potenial and totally lost it towards the end of the chase
Buuuut..what was going on along with Gayle..
he just went oooon and oooon for like 10 overs before the umpires decided to step in
Clarke was too content on not getting out to him and just played maidens of his over which cost Aus dearly in the end..

I think that Gilly's run out was the turning point. Why did Hussey bat at number 7? He must open with Gilchrist, so Australia can play with 9 bowlers (bit of an exaggeration there). Them two are more than good enough to beat any team anywhere. Well, again good captaincy from Sarwan and brilliant bowling from Taylor.
Posted by: Mustafa at October 18, 2006 6:35 PM
Pakistan beating Srilanka was not an incident nor was newzealand beating Southafrica... Now to the topic, i believe that Hussey should be promoted up the order. He should be given a chance to open up with Gilchrist.
Posted by: Ron at October 18, 2006 6:35 PM
Great win, West Indies!!! Keep the winning momentum going. There will always be hiccups along the way as in the game against SL. But, the most important thing is to ensure the overall direction is up! West Indies cricket has been steadily improving over the last few years. Seems like we're catching up to other world-class teams after falling asleep at the wheels in the 90s.
Chris, glad those four runs didn't come back to bite us!

My experience from last 28 years when I started understanding cricket is australia and pakistan are the only 2 teams who can win mataches from an absolute hopeless situation or in other words their opponents can't relax till the last ball of the game is over. While Pakistan stick to that reputation ,today australia could not.If you analyse carefully West Indies are performing much better and with lot more consistency in last one year .I think if they continue to keep up this form they will be a major threat in the next world cup considering that the world cup is in their country.Australia on the other hand have some clear weakness espcially in bowling as Macgrath is fading slowly and failure of Ricky ponting in batting.

Is history going to repeat itself. Are the aussies going to be out of the champions trophy again at the hands of india (Remeber Australia plays India in the last group game). I know its a bit too early but i feel that this win might just enable West Indies to go through the semi final ahead of Australia along with India

The one thing that is visible when Lara is captain is that he motivates other players to play above their potential. A classic example today was Runarko Morton. I hope and pray that Lara continues to wield his Magic on the stage of World Cricket for a few more years and enthralls lesser mortals like us !!!

I think that Windies played very well in the second innings but were not up to the mark in their batting. It seems to be a problem with them in the last few matches. Sarwan is a very good batsman, a very fluent one but he might be well off batting at the top of the order because he doesn't handle spin that well as he does handle quickees... along with Gayle , Sarwan might prove to be a very good choice may be even better than Chanderpaul in my opinion.
Some might argue that with Sarwan opening middle-order might get weaker but if we see at the current squad my favourite top 5 will be as follows:
Gayle
Sarwan
Chanderpaul
Lara
Hinds or Morton
All the good teams in the world send their best batsmen in top 4... so there is no logic behind Lara coming out to bat at number 6... it seems strange sometimes as if W.INDIES are used to get into trouble first and then trying to think of solution...They shud be taking precautions not recoveries!!!
Posted by: DIV at October 18, 2006 6:45 PM
1stly, congrats to the Windies, on a truly inspired performance. Sarwan's captaincy was innovative and aggressive. Good sign for WI in a post-Lara era.
I am very impressed with their bowling at the death. Accuracy and variety.
As for the C'Trophy, it does seem to be hitting a nice groove. In my opinion, the only certainty regarding the semi-finals is that England will not be in it, barring them, all the other teams have a chance. Mind you, South Africa is looking weak too!

Indeed great win for the Windies, credit to a superb overall team effort. Stand in captain Sarwan was excellent in field placement and bowling changes. However if the defending Champions want to move to the next round and win/retained The Champions Trophy they need to drop Samuels, Hinds and Baugh for the next few matches.

Congratz to the Windies, they really played out of their skins tonight. It is funny to see so many people jump on the neck of the Aussie team whenever they lose - as if they're suddenly falling to pieces. Newsflash - their team is just as human as anyone else! It was obvious that the run chase was disorganised, and the Windies bowlers capitalised on this confusion.
I wouldn't be surprised to see more upsets in this tournament either - the pitches make chasing targets an absolute nightmare, and even the best of players are struggling to come to terms with the slow, unpredictable surface. As a neutral spectator (Scotsman), I have to say that Australia are still favourites to win this tournament.
Posted by: Sriram at October 18, 2006 6:57 PM
surprising that it took an Aus-WI match for you to figure out that England was the weakest link in the group. I would have thought the India-England match settled that question once and for all

I don't agree with the media. I don't think this was an upset today. I think WI have improved alot over the last few months and they are very close to teams like India, Pakistan and South Africa and now Australia(Beating Aussies twice in two months cannot be a one off victory/upset). I even saw some people saying the Pak beating Sri was an upset. No it was not an upset because Pak is one of the best teams in the world. It was just about picking themselves up from the sad situation that was imposed on them by the unfortunate circumstances due to which everyone thought was a very tough and near impossible task.

Great win by the West Indies. Slowly, over the past year we are beginning to chinks in the Australian armor. They are showing less and less of the killer instinct that separted them from the rest. Their fielding standard has also dropped some (they are still better than most). I wonder if this is the begining of the end for the great Australian cricket dynasty. They have great players in Lee, Martyn and Clarke, Hussey but gone are the Haydens, the McGraths (I doubt he can be his old self again) the Gillespies, Warne and Bevan. I think the distance between the Aussies and the others is going to get smaller and the Aussies are going to crash soon

Great win by the Windies,
Age slows anyone, and I hope that Lara is not out of this Championship. The performance by himself and Morton under such difficult conditions showed the quality and talant in the windies team.
The tournament is open the windies have been punishing the Indians in recent times and the English not at its best, being plagued with injuries.
Hats of to both teams for the fight they showed. It was a contest, worth every penny paid to see it.

It would appear that WI play AUS with a new found belief that they can beat them at any time. case in point was the last series in Malaysia. Except for the finals Australia came dangerously close to elimination at the hand of the WI.
Posted by: jerome at October 18, 2006 7:23 PM
Good that you woke up Tim "West Indies are no longer the weakest link in the group. England are." England are the worst ODI team right now and windies on the other hand are improving every day. Their only problem is they are highly unpredictable, which is good and bad. It is going to be very interesting to see as there is gonna be a close race between India, australia and windies for getting into the 2nd round. After a long time, we are witnessing a ODI series/tournament which is not lopsided.

The West Indies are my team, but we shouldn't get over-confident after this win. We beat Australia in Malaysia too, but after that went 80 all out against Sri Lanka. WI have to start performing consistently to become a top side again. Despite that, I still think they have a chance to win this tournament. That is because exactly as has been said, any team in this tournament can beat any other team in this tournament on their day. That is actually how they won it in 2004 as well.

Man what a match ! Its awesome. Now every team will think that they can beat Mount Everest Australians.I always had one doubt in my mind that who is greatest batsman, whether it is Sachin or Lara but now I can definitely say Lara is the greatest batsman alive !,He played beautifully in the situation where every one thought that there would be another colapse and proved that he doesnot play for records. There is criticism that sachin doesn't play well in tense situations and looks for records so come on sachin prove them wrong and me also
Now as West indies won agianst Aussies there will huge struggle for India to reach semifinals.

Good work by the West Indies, hope they can continue to win games. Great captaincy by Sarwan, I realised his potential in the Stanford Twenty20 series.

Wow!! It's a great win for WestIndies. At last champion start defending. They show how to beat a team like Australia. Indeed they done it perfect way. You just look at Gayle, what a aggresive performence, hats off to him. Please Lara keep it up to the final.

remember one thing. the west indies team comprises over a dozen SEPARATE countries, each with its own agenda,( and separated by water,to boot) totalling only 6 million people. and we still are the most entertaining thing to have ever happened to cricket.beating australia was not a hiccup. australia taking our crown as best team was. their time has run out, because we are going to take it back, watch and see.

Whooo....Chris Gayle...YEAH!! Thats the spirit! Its time the Aussies know that they cant boss around whenever they want simply because they think they are invincible! Thats the way Gayle...HURRAYYY!!! You made Clarke learn it the hard way!!! You gave them the same treatment they give others! Proud of you Chris!! Cheers!

A wonderful job done by the W.I. Hats off to them. They produce a mature performance. They are really good to go all the way. They have been stedily improving over the last year. I hope that Lara will recover soon to conrinue the good job he is doing. The proof of desire is pursuit. The W.I. team does have the desire to win.

well well well, my word what a performance by the windies to knock down the world champion. The turning point of the game in todays game was the traditional windies spirit which led the aussies down.

Congratulations to our beloved WI cricket team. All the guys pulled together today and we are very proud of them. I hope that they will continue to work hard and do the people of the Caribbean and all WI fans proud. Way to go guys!
All the best for the remainder of the tournament.!

I am a diehard WI fan. This win over Australia thrilled me very much. Since i have not had much to cheer about for a while, I will definately savour this moment for a long time. I am a great believer in BRIAN CHARLES LARA whatever others may think or say about him. He has given me over a decade of joy, especially against Australia and today is one of those days. Keep it up lads, the entire Caribbean is behind you.

Congrats Windies who are now predictable in their inconsistency. i.e. if they make 80 today you can bet money they'll make 280 in the next game. I loved the passion Chris showed and hope he continues. Seemed to hae a positive effect on the team. Also liked the consultancy which took place throughout our fielding innings. Big up from JA

This win reminds so much about the grit and determination that Courntney Browne and Ian Bradshaw showed in the Final in England two years ago.
It shows that once you back yourself that all things are possible, and well done to all concerned especially to Taylor for keeping his concentration going and bowling a most impressive ten over spell

Yeah the tournament has come alive !! And the other 3 in teams in the group gotta really fight each other through a bloody battle now to get past to the next round. It makes the remaining matches in the tourney more interesting. CONGRATS TO WINDIES!!

Tim,
Often time you do write good. But do you really have write everyday?
We all know that losing a limited over match is no reflection of any teams long term future.
Who says that Aussies flopped, they just lost by 10 runs, its ok. Does England fop matters, come on, there is lot of time before Ashes starts. And they will be playing in AUSTRALIA and TEST MATCHES not limited over cricket.

Congratulations on a great game Windies!!
Before I continue, let me state I am a West Indian fan through and through (in the current era) - been with them in good and bad times - devastating losses and exciting wins. Yesterday's victory was one of the best because of how we came from behind twice. Matches like that are why cricket is sometimes so exciting to watch.
Although Sarwan, Morton and, most definitely, Taylor played great roles - one thing continues to frustrate me - when Lara bats well, WIndies are at our best. When he fails we are usually easy to beat. Except for very few occasions when Sarwan or Chanderpaul has stood up (as batting leaders) and played gritty, match-changing/winning innings, this script has not changed. Lara - like any other mortal - has limited shelf life and - if things continue in this same vein -we will miss him more than we should when he goes. Unfortunately, Gayle is an opener and usually is not around long enough to 'guide the troops through the trenches'.
Look for the Aussie to bounce back - they will come back hard - they've done it before.

The Windies is now beginning to believe in their talent and ability. At the same time the Aussies are looking an ageing bunch. Wonder where their next worldbeater will come from. Farewell McGrath.

Interesting to look back on some of these comments that prematurely predicted the end of Australia's dominance, in light of the result of the Final (and the Windies' meek capitulation in that match). Let's be honest here - it's still Australia first and daylight second.
