Players of today are a breed apart from players of the 1980s. Wait and see how things are ten years from now, and how unintrusively technology enables players to maximise their potential.
Forgetting Sourav for a second, a comment on Amit Verma's logical dissection -
Amit, More was saying just one thing, with two pieces of information. If you reverse the order of the two pieces you you looked at, you will find that to be true.
For unknown (and debatable) reasons, Sourav being part of the team but not the XI was unacceptable. The reason for him not being in the XI is Yuvraj - this is meant to causally explain the first part, and has no life of its own.
So yes, you can criticize (or ask) More for reasons as to why Sourav could not be a reserve member of the team. But you cannot fault him on grounds of logic or accuse him of making no sense.
These reasons may well-explain why Sourav, if he's the 7th best bat, doesn't find a place in an era where bench strength is considered crucial. And surely there can be legitimate reasons as to why one's skills alone don't assure one of a place? (Roy Keane,'02WCup, and Shoaib before the England series) If such reasons do exist, isn't your comment about 'lip service to professionalism' is a bit premature?
